I am just getting back into playing 40K after about a year off. I have been an Eldar player since 2nd ed and have a large collection of models, so I am not really constrained in any of my choices. I have also played all sorts of lists so I am pretty comfortable with adapting my lists and tactics. I have not yet played with the new codex. I was wondering what your opinions are on good combinations, effective models, and/or just fun choices to play.
Thanks for your input...
We are in just the same kind of situation! I dusted my old Eldar army, which was started in 2nd ed and now I'm having a lot of fun with this new incarnation.
I can say now that most of the terrible work of... let's call it "streamlining", which killed or ruined the mood of the Eldar army in 3rd ed. has been corrected.
Now every unit is enjoyable, and fun to play, and has its role. You just have to try them all, that's my opinion, and find what works best for you, because now, at last, there's a LOT of possible, WORKING army lists out there.
As a start I'd say you should check out the re-vamped Dark Reapers, sturdier with their 3+ armour, increased range and the new exarch options of the Tempest Launcher.
Then you should try the new combos: farseer with Doom supporting Howling Banshees or pretty much any other CC squad.
Also, Shining Spears got a fantastic boost in hitting power, and the Harlequins too are a great option.
In the Heavies: don't miss the new Fire Prism, and while the Wratihlord is not the CC monster it once was, it's far more shootier.
i find that a squad of 3 war walkers backed up by 2 squads of dire avengers works well for me, the avengers soak up all the assaults while the walkers are free to wreak havoc. also a personaly recomendation is warp spiders. these are my fave unit by far as they can deep strike behind enemy lines and easily take out a lagging HQ in 2 turns or less. my last battle ended with just my squad of 5 spiders against 3 tau battlesuits and 2 squads of fire warriors. my spiders anhiliated the 3 suits in one shoot phase and then continued to munch thru both fire unit squads in assault phase. all in all i lost ONE spider
