Welcome to Librarium Online!
I noticed that the hammerhead section says that it already has a targetting array. So then why does it say that the hammerhead can take any thing from the vehicles wargear list? I know that GW probably didn't want BS 5 railguns but I cant help but wonder. I apoligise if this has already been discussed.
Heh heh... BS 5... railguns...
Hm...initially, I thought I found a loop hole and drooled over 2+ to hit...
HOWEVER, the HH profile in the codex states the HH is ALREADY equipped with the TA.
The entry to the Tau Vehicle Armory states only ONE of each upgrade may be taken per vehicle (exception to seeker missiles).
So, looks like only 1 TA per HH...
It's not a loophole.
You can't take the Targeting Array, simply because it already have it
Dang, looks like Ill have to settle with +3 hits. I guess it would be extremely cheesy to have railguns hitting on +2's.
That's what markerlights are for
Are already some of the most dangerous tanks in the game. What other unit can move 12" ignoring terrain and still fire such a powerful weapon? Not to mention having such good front armour and only taking glancing hits, with a re-roll on immobilising hits.
3+ to hit is awesome. The risk of 2+ when you combine with a single markerlight hit is scary for any opponent.
Think about it
Yes The Sky Ray will most likely beat the Hammerhead on the to-hit list but that's also close to the only use I can see of it. I don't need a quite expensive tank with limited shots eventhough it can mark enemy units. I'm still going to use my heavy slots at Hammerheads and Broadsides all dependig on the army I'm facing.
A Skyray has 'wait for it' yep six shots, so where does the limited come from, they have the exact same number of shots in a standard game.
Yeah the raikgun is an awesome weapon, +2 STR over a seeker and the subs are sweet, but the Skyray has benefits to, no LOS if called by other ML's, unlimited range and the ability to fire all its own seekers in 3 moves (or 1/2 if other ML's are used), it can fire two shots a turn (which makes it a little bit more certain to stop that fast transport with those Wyches bearing down on your lines) and it can hit two units a turn if needed.
The Marker lighting role should not be dismissed so casually either, its very nice to have 2 BS4, ML's with no movement restrictions.
Now an ION head does have more shots true, but I stil think the Skyray is the better option.
Now dont get me wrong I would take a HH over a Skyray if it was the only tank I could take, but in 1500pt or 2000pts I take 2 Railheads (I don't waste time on IONS) and a Skray and they work fantastically well together (ML subs are awesome), mainly because opponents do not see the Skyray as a threat as much as other parts of the list (HH and XV8's)
