Welcome to Librarium Online!
Why does every one hate those miss understood great model hellions? They can move up the board quickly and get in a lot of charges which make them great as far as wounding. Hellions are great models one of the few good models that dark eldar have. Hellions can screw up peoples battle plans and with the free drug roll they could have 3 attack each on a charge or streght 5. Why does every one hate them?
Prey they don't take you alive
Wow, so, so , so , so many reasons:
-Cost WAAAY Too much for what they do
- Even on the charge, they will most likely kill 1 or 2 marines, and get more damage done to them than they do.
-Skyboard or nothing, they die from shooting so easily
-Why make them 0-1 when almost no one will use more than 0.
-They have shite stat line.
-Drugs are random.
How would they screw up a battleplan? They screw up your battleplan because they are an enormous points sink, just like scourges.
Except there are sometimes good reasons to take scourges unlike hellions who are useless against ANYTHING you send them agaisnt, I personaly wouldnt even usethem if they were 10-12 pts a piece.
The 0-1 availability is a great mysery to me as well, whats with the worst unit in DE army having restrictions about???
Because if you took a whole army of hellions (somehow ignoring that Hellions are fast attack) time would warp in a giant loop which would throttle us all.
And the badgers would rise, taking civilization down.
And all GW products ever created in the past present and future would self destruct at the point of their creation, leaving massive time rifts out of which would spring brain eating zombie porpoises bent on the stamping out of the remnants of humanity.
So, thats why Hellions are a 0-1.
minimalism is the key.
Ok they aren't overly expensive. The drugs all come out the same expect th crazed and strike first drug other wise the end results are all the same. Hellions are going to kill a lot, but they can go from squad to squad either helping one of your squads that is in combat or tie up many squads for a time in a game. That will screw up a lot of things if one turn a squad can do much than the next turn a different squad can't do much. Hellions don't suck they are just misunderstood.
Prey they don't take you alive
Whilst asmodean's ideas are... interesting (ok ok i chuckled), I believe the true reason for hellion's lameness is due to the following law of games workshop:
> Make a unit in a codex that people are put off using by the fact that they are useless.
> Revamp the codex and make the unit brilliant, at the same time as making something previously good utter crap.
This, ladies and gentlemen, ensures that we all buy the models we haven't bought previously. DE players on average have quite a few wyches right? I'm betting wyches get the wrong end of the stick on the update (whenever that will be ( ), and scourges, hellions and grots get revamped so we all give in and get some!
My good sir, hellions are not ever going to kill a lot, Str 4 on the charge, WOMG!!! Its not that amazing, in fact, if you charge Marines, they have a better chance of killing you.
Get it through yer head, they suck!
It will not screw up your opponents battle plan, why? BECAUSE HE KNOWS THEY ARE THERE!
If they somehow came in like a total surprise like mandrakes, then yes, they would be better, how can you not call a Hellion overpriced, they are.
Hellions were a decent unit to take in V3 especially against high save armies. You could fire the Hellglaive to thin the herd a bit then charge. If you survived through their assault phase, hop out go back in.
I do occasionally field a small squad of them as a one shot wonder unit. Take 3 give one a blaster, deep strike and take one shot at that pie plate dropper then remove them from the table when he returns fire. Risky, yes, but if you take out that Defiler, Basi or whirlwind, no more pie plates raining death on you.
