Generally you are right, troops win battles.
Your friends seem not to realize the strength of a horde of rather weak models, they load up on less more expensive ones...this is often a failure, as troops are usually a good deal for the points.

It's hard to say which army has the best troops in the game, that's similar to asking which army is the best one. The efficiency of an army's troop choices depends on other things too, so it's almost impossible to determine.

Would that be the same as saying a small army of thousand sons with then normal 42 pts blokes and a hq couldnt beat a mass of tyranids?

Cus in some missions all you need to do is to tie up your opponents squads while your specialists complete the mission, e.g scythegaunts(5 pts each, troops) in squads of 32 3 squads tie up all of sumones troops, and the fastest he can kill them is 10 per turn for each of his squads and the enemy HQ is standing there at the back watching the big boys(HT carnifex) walking unaposed down the table towards the objective/kill.

They cost 24pts, not 42, and they are still quite the most cost efficient thing in a TS army - they are for good reason called the "backbone" of a TS army.
Also note that scythegaunts do not cost 5pts.

I will argue that for 17 points you cant beat a Space Marine for troops. Straight 4 profile with a 3+ armor save....god damn.

My troops are pretty darn good too, but I would rather have marines. I "over mutated" my gaunts (toxin sacs, leaping, adrenal glands for WS and either Implant Attack or the extra I I havent decided which). Gonna be 12-14 pts each.

I take a large unit of common Hormagaunts, and then alternate between Spinegaunts (for when I need fodder) and Lysogaunts (maxed out CC gaunt, but no leaping). Gaunts can make or break an army, and you can't go far wrong with a large brood of Hormagaunts.

Incidentally, what does the Lyso prefix actually mean? I saw it on a site somewhere, and liked the name, but I've no idea what it actually stands for.

    That's a space wolf then, isn't it?

Death Guard have quite good troops, four "only" four additional points compared to a vanilla marine they get fearlessness, true grit and T5.
