Most of the games I play with Tau will include one or two Kroot-squads.
I never use a shaper, because it costs too much (point-wise) 21 point for the shaper and one point extra for the kroot, and I also have a problem with the shaper forcing you to consolidate instead of going after the enemy.
I agree that Ld 7 is a bit low, and I still have to test Ld to advance after CC. The way I solve this is by getting a Etheral, and let him join up with the Kroot.
The Kroot now test at Ld 10, they can advance after combat, and the Etheral is pretty safe. Also giving al my normal Tau units on the board rerolls on Ld.
I've done this a lot, and it works really well (for me)
Does anyone have any other tactics with kroot, I'd like to hear them.
the way i use my kroot is i put them in fron of my Broadside battle suit(in cover)to screen them from fire. That way in cover the have a 4+ cover and when they are attacked they get to strike first. i use a shaper because of the 3 attacks and the 6+ save kroot arent any good if they are dead.
Try too kind foward cover positions for your kroot and then when the enemy gets close assault.
