I haven't heard much about Sniper teams, nor have I used them or seen them in use. On paper, they look o.k, but I was hoping someone with experience using or going against them could help. Are they worth the points? What should they be used for and how should they be used?
You may have really well thought out, and complicated tactica, but I know I have the most efficient one : I shoot you, you die.
They're used for slowly killing off MEQ's and for an extra markerlight. They also cause pinning checks and might be very useful against IG armies because each drone can target a different unit with their target locks to force pinning checks on everything. That could be devastating.
They are also very fragile and in my experience the stealth field doesn't work too well - when the drones have range they are easily close enough to have enemy units firing back at them with a good chance of hitting despite the stealth field. The few times I tried them they died quickly and I have terrible luck with pinning checks - every army seems to have leadership rerolls, leadership 10 or a way to automatically pass. Pinning doesn't work very well against the opponents I face. In fact, the Tau are the lowest leadership army I've seen yet and there is no way to raise it or help except with an Ethereal - a dangerous option for a mobile list.

my belief is they are usefull in lower point games around 1250 and below. higher then that and they take away a hammer head or broadside team because of there use of a heavy support slot. though there is someone on this forum who uses sniper drones all the time at every point level. though i dont remeber who.
Never give up. Never give up. HIT, HIT, HIT, HIT!
I face Tau all the time and I rarely see the Snipers. The player I talked to about them said they just don't make their points back, limited range and lots of armies are difficult to pin. He found better uses for the points and has dropped them entirely for now.
Personally I don't think they are worth it and you can put the points in other units that are more effective. Say.. the Warfish. I hate them... annoying buggers.
I love sniper teams, ultimate MEQ unit for the points cost. When i face marines i always take a sqaud to back up my ionheads, picking off models they fail to kill.
i bought a squad cause i think they look cool....although i dont like the tau dude who comes with em....
might proxy a couple of squads for a game against some eldar this weekend....deep strike em and take out his farseer and wraithlord.
on second thought's i bet you cant even deep strike em....will have to check the codex....combined with the heavy nature of the rail rifle they will be pretty slow in a list that has 2 HH and 3 firewarrior squads in Devilfish.
i think the sniper drones would be a viable option if they had infiltrate.
its utterly ridiculous that a unit like that wouldn't and without the option to take a transport, they must move half the game to have a hope of a decent position, pure crap!
im mad too because i like the concept.
Snipers real world or whatever have two main rules:
(1) Shoot and move (this is carved in stone)
(2) Always follow the 1st rule
The main problem I have with sniper drones is the same problem I have with XV88's they are to easy to nullify, as soon as they are forced to move they are useless, also it is easier to make life hard for them simply by using cheap units to force target priority tests, the weapon is fine as long as your shooting things that need high strength and decent AP (I/E MEQs) problem is I have plenty in my list that can handle them and when dealing with non MEQ infantry the pulse rifle is much better and cheaper, also I dont compromising my heavy support when I take XV's and FW's/Kroot etc.
Other problem I have is cost, 3 shots at the unit points cost (even with ML's I will come to this later) is way to expensive without the benefit of mobility to make full use of the shots).
I can take a 2 Deathrains with TA's and TL for 116 pts and hit two targets at better hit rate, superior strength and hurt armour as well, yeah MEQs get saves but to me its balanced out by the superior versatility and I dont use a valuable heavy slot.
I just cannot see any advantage to losing a Hammerhead or Skyray to take these, 3 units is very expensive, pinning hardly ever works and they are simply no good at anti armour (heavy choice anyone)
The Markerlight is also flawed, yeah its good to have three ML's available but if you use them for other units your drones are compromised by poor BS (even with it the BS is only average), so your always having to compromise.
If GW actually understood the concept of snipers they would have given the drones the ability to move and shoot, taken the TL away and made a spotter drone, so you would have three drones in each unit, two with modified railrifles (same stats just assault 1) and a sniper drone with modified markerlight.
So you would have this:
Unit: Sniper drone team
each team consists of 3 drones, two equipped with modified Railrifles using the following profile
Rail rifle SD STR6, AP3, Range 36", Assault 1
Each railrifle equipped drone has the following stats
SD drone WS2, BS2(4), S3, T3, W1, I3 (reduced to balance assault on railrifle), A1, LDS7, SV4+ unit type jump infantry (jetpack)
One drone is classified as the spotter, it is equipped with a modified Markerlight, the markerlight has the following stats:
SD Markerlight STR n/a, AP n/a, Range 36" assault 1
The spotting markerlight is unit specific, its wavelength is specifically tuned to the SD drones targeting array wavelength and is not available for use by any other Tau unit, if a hit is scored the SD drones BS is improved by +2 (this helps to balance the loss of the 3rd railrifle)
Spotter drone stats as per sniper drones with exception of BS which is 4
Infiltrate (this is balanced by loss of stealth field)
Cover save improved by +1 to a maximum of 3
Unit cost 50pts, non scoring unit, fast attack (3 units can be taken using one fast attack slot but only a maximum of 3 units can be taken)
Sniper drones cannot benefit from other units markerlights because their receiving arrays are tuned solely to the spotters Markerlight frequency
Now to me this is much better than the unit as it stands at present, it follows the idea of a sniper unit much more closely, mobile, decent firepower but not over the top and gives improved cover saves as snipers will always try to get a secure camouflaged position, but I think the stealth field would over power the unit, in my rules they have better cover saves and the ability to JSJ which is powerful enough.
They would be a brilliant skirmish, nuisance unit which is what snipers are supposed to do.
For 150pts you would have 6 railrifles, firing at 3 units at BS4 for the spotter and railrifles BS4 if ML hit successful, ability to JSJ and a better cover save and infiltrate., what do think?
