do you think if a army was stripped of all its ordnace will it be able to hold back a swarm of gaunts(a big one)
Yes of course. There are other things that kill gaunts as easy as ordnance does. Light firearms usually kill even more gaunts than the big guns do. Bolters/Lasguns/Shurikats are quite effective against gaunts.
lasguns they hardly do any damage to good brood and remember for every ten space mariens there a 20 odd gaunts
One lasgun won't do much damage, but chances are that the lasguns will outnumber even the gaunts - by 66% in case of hormagaunts.
Even if we assume that scythegaunts run towards normal ig, then there will be one lasgun for every scythegaunt, and in average they can fire twice before the scythegaunts reach them.
That's 2 lasgun shots for every scythegaunt, 1/2 to hit, 1/2 to wound. Half of the gaunt brood will be extinct before they reach the enemy, and in case of 20 IG against 10 scythegaunts my bet would be on the IG.
Yes, there will be less marines than gaunts, but in average the marines will be able to fire twice unless you use expensive hormagaunts.
So in case of the 20 gaunts that you mentioned the ten marines will have killed almost nine of them before they reach the marine's lines - and in case of 11 gaunts vs 10 marines my bet would be on the marines.
Note that i'm not saying that gaunts are bad, they certainly are a good unit, taking their strength from concentrating their numbers against a rather small part of the enemy army, but there are enough ways to deal with them.
i agree with archon. the bolters AP doesnt even allow gaunts a armour save, and although few in number (SM) they will still be able to slaughter at least 60 % of the charging gaunts
Speaking as a Tyranid player who has lost battles to Catachan Jungle Fighters who lacked anything bigger than an Autocannon: yes, it's possible.
Speaking as a Tau player who's broken a Tyranid attack completely using nothing but Pulse Rifles, Kroot in large numbers, and the occasional Plasma Rifle: yes, it's possible.
...Though opponents do tend to forget about concentration of fire when I put six full broods of 'Stealers on the table. They have this habit of panicking, splitting their fire up, and only putting dents in my line instead of holes. Can't imagine why...
