Welcome to Librarium Online!
Ok, so yesterday me and my friends were having some fun playing each other with special characters (a thing I don't normally enjoy when playing Tau) and a couple of questions came up in the process.
The Paradox of Duality. First I would like to scoff at the codex when it says "incalculable power", and second, I would like to know if when Aun'va dies, the stat bonuses that come with it are dissolved when he dies.
Dawn Blade. Only cool CC weapon we have, although the consequences of taking Faright are too much for some people (me included) to consider bringing him along. But does the weapon ignore ALL saves, or just regular saves. Like with many other weapons, I wish it would more clearly state the details. I'm pretty sure it only counts as a power weapon, but I'd might as well ask.
And as for special characters, other than Farsight, does anyone use the other two? And does anyone else agree (or at least share wishful thinking) that Tau could do with some cool special characters? Normally, I think that special characters are just there to make the game a bit more flavorful, but it seems to be a lacking part of the Tau army.
Hope I didn't break copyright too badly.
The Dawn blade codex entry says it ignores armour saves, invulnerable saves are not armour saves so any model with an INV will get to roll an INV save against the Dawn blades attacks, also the Dawn blade is not a power weapon and Farsight is no longer classed as a monstrous creature.
Tau are the most ill served list when it comes to special characters, most other lists actually get advantages when taking special characters, what do we get an Ethereal who grants a CC bonus when he dies (oh just what Tau need), a renegade who limits the force organisation choices you can take to a ridiculous degree (1 Hammerhead yeah right) and Shadowsun who has drones which make her lose her IC status and short range weapons to make the lack of IC status even more dangerous and if you take her with stealths they cannot infiltrate (brilliant).
I have used farsight for friendly games but as for the others please why would anyone take them?
BRING BACK AUN'SHI!

Heh. Well, I think at least Farsight and Shadowsun have some merit. As I noted recently *here*:Originally Posted by number6

Aun'shi was tempting, but only farsight has the slightest merit, and only occasionally.
Tau were so obviously screwed over in this apartment. Maybe it was to make up for tau players narutally good looks.
What is bad about DH special characters? I know nothing about them, save they are not as useless as Aun'Va. Honestly, what does he do other than die on the pope mobile.

In response to OP. I am not very knowledgeable as of yet about the Tau I have a 1000 point army and have only recently gotten my first full squad of suits. I can tell you things I have found in my research for Tau.
1: never ever ever ever take an Etheral, they are not very good at close combat and can't shoot. so when they die and 1/3 of your army starts to fall back you get almost nothing for it
2 Shadowsun is eh, most people don't use fusion blasters on suits. Piranha's are far better suite for the task of tank popping as they can move 24" in the set up turn to get at back armor. and plasma rifles are what kill all the Terminators so she is like a bad cross between those.
3: Farsight is our best character in my opinion. he is a major commitment however and must be used wisely. I'm going to proxy for him in my army and see if he works out. as in my last game a squad of three suits and a shield drone killed a squad of power fisted Terminator at the loss of 2 wounds, with a power weapon I can only imagine.
4: in response to the flavor, Tau are their own flavor. we include two wild species into our mechanical like military force. The Imperium has a lot of characters as they are like western society where individualism and selfishness are rewarded. Tau society is Eastern in that they are collectivist, everyone fights, works and even mates for Tau'Va (the greater good) there is no room for hero's. I believe that even Farsight still fights for Tau'Va but in a way that Tau society did not or would not accept. and if you want to increase flavor you can go to Tau Lexicon - Lexicanum and name all of your warriors and sqauds my HQ Shas'O Vior'Lan Ko'Vash Or'Es (Commander Vior'Lan a worth cause, power
I don't know that their philosophy necessarily negates good special characters, there is a strong emphasis on the mysterious and powerful leadership of the ethereals. I feel there should be special characters that boost LD greatly, have psychic powers, or something along those lines.
I don't know see why everyone hates the ethereal so much. I love taking an ethereal with an honour guard of 11 and throwing him in a devilfish. Having 22 BS4 S5 shots ready in a devilfish has proved very helpful for me.
......... Seriously? You're spending that many points on a HUGE risk. No other army has a single unit that can kill off their entire army like that. Everyone knows about Ethereals and will GUN THEM DOWN. It's not hard to remove 12 T3 models. And seriously? Getting into rapid fire range? You're getting the ethereal.... and then DRIVING HIM RIGHT INTO CHARGING RANGE OF AN ENEMY? What game are you playing? Who are you playing against? How does this work?
And you're paying all those points for a unit of Firewarriors with +1 BS. Lets see.... I'll swap the Ethereal for a unit of pathfinders and just use a marker token to make them BS4 each turn. If the pathfinders die, then I don't have half my army run off the board.
