Im thinking of starting Eldar! Before i do, i would like to confirm that Eldar has everything im looking for!
Basically, i like an army that is versatile, and able to have lots of choices giving the commander a different experience everytime. For example, Tau need to shoot, i consider the game to be the same everytime as Tau have no other options but shooting. If you get me?
I also like an army that can field a powerful HQ, i know that the Avatar is powerful, but is there any other HQ choices that are priceless for the Eldar that you wouldnt leave home without?
Help is appreciated!
everything appart from the HQ,
Although clearly if you want a different army every time it is gonna get expensive
Eldar have 3 HQs:
Avatar - medium strength killer but to be fair it will get pulled down by uber HQs and has a tendency to get shot up due to a lack of speed
Autarch, - complements aspect squads, by himself, again about medium strength, will still get pulled down by uber HQs but once coupled with an aspect squad can be devestating
Farseer -psycher, generaly used to complement other units with his runes and powers, again not a monster in himself although can be difficult to kill
Everything you have been told is a lie!
The eldar do have a lot of versatility in their army list. I've seen assault heavy armies, and shooty armies do well. The one thing you will never be able to pull off is a Full assault army, like khorne, or a full shooting army like tau or imperial guard.(at least i haven't seen it be successful, i could be wrong though).
As far as hq's go, i think eldrad is one of the best hq's in the game IF you can use him with your army correctly. As far as the other ones go, they're not that great alone, but are very nasty when they start working together with other eldar units.
The eldar army is very reliant on combinations of units rather than just the units themselves.
My own quick analysis of eldar HQs:
Autarchs are,as cher said, only somewhat effective by themselves. They really shine, however, when coupled with an aspect squad. An autarch kitted out with a jetbike, laser lance and mandiblasters stuck into a shining spears squad is a very scary thing. Plus you get the coolness factor of having your general ride in with the "cavalry".
The avatar is an absolute beast if you can get him close to your opponent. But again,as cher said, he is slow. Ponderous, even. His greatest strength is likely in his ability to make eldar squads around him fearless. Being immune to meltas and flamers is kinda cool,I guess.
The farseer is,in my opinion, the eldar's most effective HQ choice. Relatively cheap, and with the choice to use 2 powers a turn he is probably the best psyker in the game(barring special characters). On the subject of characters,Eldrad Ulthran is an evil, evil elf.
EDIT: This line sums up the Eldar exactly - "The eldar army is very reliant on combinations of units rather than just the units themselves."

Versatility would not be my choice to describe most of the Eldar units, taken separately... As already said, working on combinations is the key, and I find that great fun (although I suffered many defeats working on stupid choices )...
Now diversity is certainly a hall mark of the Eldars. You can field an army where you will not find two units "of the same colour" (both actually and figuratively ).
From what you say you want, I think you may have a great time with Eldars...
Just a quick word for HQ : I think nobody mentioned the Phoenix Lords yet. In 3rd ed I used a lot of Jain Zar with my Banshees (hth screaming furies), to good effect. And there are much more powerful and colorful choices... (did I hear somebody whisper Karandras ?)
Children of Isha
Karandras is fine.
Uber HQ's=phoenix lords. Don't overlook them. Maugan Ra, Fuegan and Karandras are the best in my opinion and really pack a punch. Basically Farseers are almost essential, few armies wouldn't benefit enormously from them.
Mechanised Eldar tends to make for some fairly different games. Get a variety of tanks full of aspect warriors, then if you want more variety include harlequins on foot and war walkers/guardians/wraithlord.
Farseer /w jetbike, doom, eldritch storm
9 banshees + exarch /w wave serpent
9 harlequins + shadowseer
9 avengers + exarch /w wave serpent
3 jetbikes /w shurikannon
Vyper /w pair of shurikannons
Fire Prism /w holo-field
Fire Prism /w holo-field
I think thats about 1500 points. If not the jetbikes/vyper/pathfinders can be dropped easily enough. 10 guardians /w starcannon or scatter laser can be added to it.
Another alternative is to drop a prism for a falcon, drop down the harlequins to fit in the falcon, and drop the other prism for war walkers.
It's all up to you of course. That's just an army I thought had plenty of versatility to make for some different games.
