How does one win against the Tau in a 500pt battle? My army list would be...
Warrior Raider Squad x10
+Dark Lance x2
Wych Raider Squad x9 (Dracon attatched)
How is this to go against a standard Tau 500pt force? Not sure what he plans on using but I'm hoping to get into close combat quickly and rip him apart with the Wych and the Dracon and circle around with the other raider and ravager....
Keep in mind I am complete noob at DE, but I do have a friend that plays Tau alot, and we play alot of low point cost battles, between 4 and 8 hundred, and the only thing that should give you problems is battlesuits. They are by no means as fast as DE, but they are annoying, and can pack alot of nasty weapons on there. I would definately go after battlesuits first with the raiders and ravager, then those pesky devilfish. Once in cc, you should be able to massacre his firewarriors, and whatever kroot he may use.
Your plan sounds good, getting into cc is the safest place to be against tau, (even guardsmen kick tau around in cc).
Battlesuits, putting the BS in BullS*%t.
Personally I wouldn't bother with the Wyches you don't have an enemy combat squad to worry about, take some extra warriors instead, they are ~= to wyches against Tau and a hell of alot cheaper.
Karantalsis says take more warriors, hands up those who are surprised.
also note that you cant have two dark lances in a raider squad
The meat things seek to destroy ourselves. They hunt us as we hunt them but they are weak and uncertain. Bring them understanding of the power of ourselves through our strength and their fear. The inferior flesh will be entirely destroyed, all fragments will be smashed. Ourselves will fight to the last, all weak flesh must be consumed
I agree with using warriors or raider squads against the tau - they are better all around.
A tooled out Dracon is enough CC believe it or not but he would look a little different for me.
combat drugs, shadowfield, punisher, t-helm and plasma.
Once this guy gets into the FireWarrior line (probably hiding in cover) it most likely a "lights out" for him. So the idea is to concentrate on catapulting this guy into CC. Shadowfield is to keep him going, punisher for added str. against a mostly T3 army (so 3+ to wound w/o drugs) and plasma so you dont need any drugs to strike first. Against crisis suits 4+ to wound but that could change with drugs.
Whatever you do, do not use haywires against this army. If he has taken the "flechette" upgrades you will be sorry and if he didnt then you still need "6's" to plant the haywire on a skimmer (a complete waste if you ask me). Just shoot the skimmers, its easier.
Wyches, kinda overkill and they will soak up alot of points when they could be better spent on warriors.
Raider squads, I think you should have 2 of these. Warriors in general are better than the tau FireWarrior in that the DE warrior are cheaper, better bs, better ws, better int and better leadership. Take this squad with splinter cannons and blasters (I just cant get myself to say "shredders" but they'll work too but I am concerned about their skimmers, blasters are better). One of the raider squads can have a sybarite with either an agoniser or punisher and the other will have the Dracon on board. Use these 2 raiders to get close and "launch" the Dracon into CC. The warriors would be better shooting than CC but they can always support the Dracon if you are close enough.
Ravager looks fine, concentrate on their skimmers but that is easier said than done. Its still fragile but you do need some ranged weapons and the ravager is the best choice for now.
And for an "unorthodox" recommendation - I like to punish the Tau for their low leadership so I have had alot of success in "pinning" them. Horrorfexs are very cheap and with good range you can easily get a shot off on the first round. Silencing them for a turn means taking away the one thing that they are good at, the shooting phase. Horrorfex is so cheap for what they do I have to say strongly to try to take at least one and try it.
These are only opinions, milage may vary.
I second (third, fourth?) the idea of dropping the wyches in favour of warriors. But I would upgrade the Dracon to an Archon and use a punisher instead. An archon is robust enough to take on most of a Tau army single handed if he can stay in combat.
The best way to kill multi wound Tau (like a BattleSuit) is to inflict Instant Death (double it's toughness) with a dark lance/blaster.
Archon w Punisher, T-Helm, Drugs, S-Field, P-Grenades
Raider Squad - Sybarite w Agonizer, blaster, horrorfex
2 Sniper Squads
War Record Since Sept 2005
Old Codex 48-20-9 Dark Eldar
New Codex 1-0-0 Dark Eldar
Here is the new list...
Warrior Raider Squad x9
Warrior Raider Squad x10
Dont forget that if you use a punisher you need to take the Tormentor Helm so you can get the extra attack, 4 total instead of 3. Its not mandatory but for just a couple points you get an extra attack.
I also like combat drugs - it keeps your lord moving and you can adjust to any situation by taking the right drugs. You might have to reduce the number of warriors to free up the points but its well worth it.
I'll change that in a sec, but as far as the actual modeling... should I just get the Lord model? Where do I get punishers, agonizers, the tormenter helm.... etc? Also, what's a really cool paint scheme I could do... I was thinking of something with grey since I really like that... black grey and white maybe?
