ML's are by far the best benefit to a Tau army and gives a wide variety of units a really nice edge above other armies, and are best deployed in Pathfinder Squads and/or the Skyray

I depends on the army list you are running, but your options are basically:

    1. Pathfinders - the cheapest way to get markerlights in the army, on a point/markerlight basis. The mandatory devilfish can be kind of a drag, but they often won't stay together for long. Very fragile, and if your opponent knows about their abilities, they typically get shot up pretty bad on the first two turns. BS is also a problem.

    2. Skyray - Vehicle mounted markerlights. This serves as a great vehicle for helping out your hammerheads in a mech list, and providing some needed cover fire for pathfinders and firewarriors at times. Very resilient markerlight platform, but they can be kept from shooting if they keep getting stunned. BS is good with the TA.

    3. Stealth Markerlight Team - SMTs are interesting because they can markerlight up to their maximum distance, and hardly be shot back because of the stealth field. The addition of a markerlight drone or 2 really gives you some interesting possibilities. The problem is that you lose your normal movement to shoot the markerlight (although you can still move in the assault phase, I think). BS is also a problem here, but can be ammended with a TA.

    4. Firewarriors Markerlight Team - cheap(ish) way to get a markerlight in a firewarrior squad, especially if you are already upgrading your leader. Again, however, it's a heavy weapon, so you can't move and shoot, and you lose a couple of pulse rifle shots. BS is a problem.

    That's my two cents.

    What they both said.

I use everything but the Firewarrior markerlight team - I keep switching back and forth between the stealth team and the pathfinders. I think I like the stealth team more, but I feel I am giving up a good bit of firepower by not having stealths with their burst cannons and I always have all my elites slots filled.

i have yet to try markerlights!!!

I can't seem to afford them in my army list.

I guess i haven't really needed them upto know either....although I am only on game number 10!!

when i first looked at Tau (I came from playing Dawon of War back to 40K after an absence of about 12 years) I wanted pathfinders but to me they seem to costly. plus the markerlight being heavy and their poorish armour doesn't seem to suit my style of play or the tables ive played on which seem to lack bushes and have more buildings (also a reason I have yet to use kroot)

Markerlights are the cat's meow. They're the bee's knees.

    Yes, the bee's knees.

So have I, but elite slots are at a premium.

The problem I face is a slight lack of firepower without the standard 6 stealth suits. This is partially made up for with the 8 gun drones that take the place of the pathfinders, but not fully.

It's only an issue against hordes.

Ahh zen you are thinking markerlight!! i was refering to markerdrones, besides cant you just give the team leader a hardwired multi tracker and have him fire both the markerlight and the BC?
