Should i use an avatar in a 1250 army against IG?
what is the benefit of using him? Is there any?
The Avatar is amazing for what he is, but IMO I don't think he's worth the trouble. The main reason is that he is easily picked off by massed heavy weapons, in particular Imperial Guard. Unlike Tyrannids where they have can many monstrous creatures, so loosing one or two is quite minor the Avatar is the only one the Eldar get. He's also quite slow which doesn't help.
On the other end of the scale however, an Eldar army is ment to work together to bring strengths to where they're needed and weaknesses away from the foe, this is also true for the Avatar. My own opinion is that he sn't worth it though.
The Avatar has his place in a fairly slow/infantry based army. Guardians may not be that great, but when you've got a whole bunch who will never run away, the game shifts in your favour.
Fortuning the avatar might be a plan though. He is a bullet magnet, so making his as tough as possible (and making good use of LoS blocking cover) will give your opponent some big issues.
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone
I absultely love the guy. But it all depends on your army. If you have lots of heavy weapon targets then he fits right in, overwhelming the heavy weapons. I love to move to the main objective with him. With him and some supporting units he is unstoppable at holding the objective. He really is quite useful as long as he is used smart. Plus nothing is better then placing the huge forgeworld model and watching your opponents jaw drop. (He can be used to draw fire if you wish). 2 waithlords, 3 warwalkers, 3 vipers and an avatar can leave any opponent jibbering.
An Avatar and three Wraithlords can be a fairly solid base unit, then have fast units fly around them. All depends on tastes I guess
And, if nothing else, an Avatar always looks good on the table!

"Ask not a question of the Eldar for they will give you three different answer, each wholey true and completely terrifying to know"
ok the answer is maybe (as you can tell by the differences of opinion, Greymonk hit the nail on the head, it depends what else is in your army and how it plays.
Avatars are not the fastest things in the world, sure, but get them up close and they will rip anything in an IG army to shreds (with the potentially somewhat embarresing exception of a rough rider squad that gets to charge)
So the first point is - is anything else in your army getting up there or would he be isolated?
Next thing - sure he can get shot to shreds, particularly by Anti tank weapons. So if you have no other targets that AT weapons will shoot at, then he is probably a waste, on the other hand if you are littered with wraithlords and tanks/transports, then either he will be too busy to shoot the avatar and you get hit him, or he will shoot at the avatar and leave your tanks alone, which is fair enough.
So back to Greymonks point- what else is in your army?
Everything you have been told is a lie!
my army i was gonna use is
1 farseer (guide,doom)
2x5 dire avengers
10 guardians with a scatter laser
4 dark reaper's
1 wraithlord with brightlance and shuriken cannon
wave serpant or a falcon with 5 fire dragons
5 striking scorpions or some harlequins
question = is the avatar any good
answer = hell yes like all eldar units if used right and supported correctly he f'in rocks
