It's a periodic topic I know but I'm curious how people are enjoying their troop options. I'd also like to hear specific tactics you're using.
Currently (more out of what I have than anything else) I'm using exarcless dire avengers. However I'm actually am coming to like them.
I field them in six groups of minimum or slightly larger size making them fairly cheap units indavidually, however they fill up my troop FOC so often my oppenent will finish deploying first. Letting me have the advantage when placing my later units. It also gives me a lot of scoring units that can actually hustle to an objective pretty well.
And of course carefull moving and doom and all that. They do seem to get a goodly number of kills. Especially against the IG I seem to be running into a lot lately. Actually what they do to IG can't be said in polite company.
The surprise is how usefull they've been in CC. Not on their own, but with my spears. Lets say a unit too fast to dance around is closing in or that I have to engage for other tactical reason. For an example assault marines with the standard powerfist sargent. Now shining spears no likey hidden powerfists. However by charging in with the DA and getting them in B2B with the sarge I force him to dedicate his attacks to the DA per the multiple combat rules. The spears then lance into the side of the unit. Inflicting respectable casualties and with the extra numbers from the DA possibly getting them to fall back.
Also occasionally this lets me hit and run with the spears early. Such as to avoid some other unit that my opponent expected to charge in to that melee next turn. The spears moving so as to use the combat to block shooting LOS and make contacting them impossible. The DA probably don't fair to well. But again these are cheap units. The whole squad only costs less than a pair of spears, and in this exchange the opponent should be losing an expensive unit or two.
I wonder if stuff like that might make storm guards/regular guardians worth it? I just worry as they don't have the shooting dance DAs spend most of their time doing. And they don't hold up to bolter fire.
The general consensus is that DA are much better in almost every respect than Guardians. The only time you would really take defenders is when you want a static element with a heavy weapon and the only real time that you would take storm is in a serpent with an enhancing warlock. Without the serpent the stormies are too squishy and even with it they tend to squish against anything MEQ.
I can understand your tactics of using small squads of DA minus the exarch but the exarch makes them so much better in every respect. Bladestorm ensures shooty death for a turn and defend + the PW/SS combo makes for a tarpit that nothing will escape for a few turns.
Give them a try and you might change your mind about those exarchs.
I tend to run a ten strong unit of DA with exarch(switches between PW/SS/Defend and Dual ASC/Bladestorm) and a unit of either guardian defenders with SC or pathfinders and almost always a unit of 3 jetbikes. In games larger than 1500 points I include all three.
IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT!
I survived LO Chat thanks to: Karmoon, Rabbit, Process, Tossy and Meish.
One of the tactics i've been trying out lately is to use a Dire avengers squad tooled for defense, a 5 man wraithguard squad with a spiritseer supported by a wraithlord with brightlance and wraithsword. These take up one flank and move slowly forward with the DA behind the WG and the WL on the side. It's really tough and can kill a entire variety of enemy's.
I try to use this tactic as as the Anvil in a hammer and anvil like play. But I have not used it more then 3 times so I can't be sure how it works yet.
The Morbidos Fleet will reclaim the Eldar empire. This time there shall be no mercy. Let them choke in their own blood!
