Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have read several tacticas, articles about Necron wargear, etc. and most of them say something along the lines of "it's up to you" "some swear by it, some swear it off" or something similar when it comes to the gaze of flame. I would like to say that I am one of those who swear by it. For the tiny cost of it (compared to most other Necron wargear) both of its properties are extremely useful in my opinion. On my non-VoD lord, I equip him as follows: gaze, chronometron, orb, phase shifter, warscythe and I join him with my largest group of warriors (the one that gets charged the most) An argument I saw of why Gaze is often not taken is because you can almost get another warrior for its cost, but the way I see it, if it saves a single warrior from his death, it has more than paid for itself. For instance, just this Saturday I played a game against a seasoned Black Templars player, and he was losing scores of bonus charging attacks, which would obviously have killed at least several warriors had I not had the Gaze. Also, I did end up breaking once, which brings up the Chronometron. Had I not had the extra dice to see if I can get away safely or not, my squad would have been run down. He spent a LOT of effort trying to bring down this one unit of warriors with a lord, and ended up getting wiped out because of it. This is just a single example of why I swear by these 2 underestimated pieces of wargear, and I would like you guys to share your thoughts and feelings, and experiences with these items, whether they are good or bad.

9 times out of ten they aren't that useful.
Rarely do you want your lord in CC (even with crappy troops) so they aren't much use there.
Basically its because the res orb and phase shifter are simply the best wargear and giving an already expensive lrod more gubbins isn't always a great idea.
Thats not to say they don't have uses, its jsut necron wargear is mostly pointles outside of about 4 items.
I would disagree about them not being useful 9 times out of 10. Where I play, there are Ork players, CSM demon bombers, tyranid players, a black templar player, and a couple DE players. It's almost impossible to not end up in close combat at some point in the majority of my games. The 25 points for both of these items is always worth it for me, and that's really not asking much at all
I WANNA GET STUCK IN WIT DA BOYZ
I kit out my two Destroyer bodied lords for the specific purpose of charging the hardest enemy unit I can find with my wraiths.
Destroyer Body, Phase Shifter, Phylactery, Gaze of Flame and a War Scythe
Destroyer Body, Resurrection Orb, Phylactery, Gaze of Flame and a War Scythe
These two go with two units of 3 Wraiths and sit back using the Orb to protect my army then use their large movement to charge in and easily take down my mates Nurgle Chaos Terminator Lord and Chosen Terminator retinue.
Any one charging into them gets no charge bonus's and lose's 2 of thier leadership.
With a Necron Lord stat's and abilities they should end up in CC, there's no reason why they can protect your army and kill the enemy.
Marine equivelant WS and I are hardly good stats for a CC HQ.
Though the destroyer lord thing is the correct way to use it.
Most people don't bother (a la my last post) because the lord is htere to protect a warrior mass, not pro acvtively go for assault unless its to sort out anything that meets your lines.

ive always tried to experiment with my lord, seeing what he can do with what hes got, although i have to say that any time ive used him for HQ killing..he dosent often do very well, even with wraiths. But from what i read it sounds like your charging chaos lords!
