Welcome to Librarium Online!
I bought a hammerhead and equipped it with the rail gun, I have had no experince with the ion cannon, and have seen that primarily players arm their hammerheads with the rail gun. I'm just curious to what you guys arm with your hammerhead, and if I should equip my other hammerhead (when I get it) with an ion cannon. All input would be appreciated.
Don't glue it on and use them both interchangablly.
The Ion Cannon works well against power armored troops (SMurfs etc.) While the Railgun is awesome against hoard armies and tank/apc armies.

Also, the Ion Cannon tends to perform extremely well in Cityfight, where it's shorter range isn't going to be a hindrance.
In general, even against Marines, I favor the Railgun. I don't care if I'm shooting at Terminators or Scouts, if I nail the entire squad with the template, something is going to die eventually. Besides, if my Hammerhead is shooting at infantry, then that means all of my opponent's vehicles are already dead.
The Hammerhead performs best when it's hunting other tanks. Once it's finished with that job, then it can move on to secondary targets (heavy infantry, Dreads, etc) and tertiary targets (light infantry, et al).
I use railgun.
Its versitilaty is well worth the 30 pts. The solid shot rips through armor like nobodys buisness, and the blast is great for any massed troops.
Like Nightwalker said, the blast is even good for marines, even if they get the save, they will fail some.
I once landed a blast shot on a 12 man group of 2 Black templare assault troop squads. Out of the 12, 8 failed the test and died, where as only 3 MAX if id used ion cannon.
high dont mean to high jack the topic so an answer will do and also apologize for the newbie question but can the hammerhead move and fire its rail gun and also can it switch between solid shot and ordinnce blast. sorry trying to find out how to use my tank in the best manor possible.
It can move up to 6 " and fire all of its weapons and up to 12" and fire just the defensive weapons(sms or burst cannons). If you give it a multi tracker(you should always do this) it can move up to 12" and fire all of its weapons. The multi tracker basically makes it fire like a fast vehicle, although it can't move 24" like a fast vehicle.
You decide which type of ammo (solid or submuntion) you are firing each time you fire the railgun, before you roll to hit. You don't have to pick one or the other for the entire game, you can switch back and forth, which is why I like the Railgun over the Ion cannon.
ok so i can move 6" and fire every weapon including a railgun and if i have a multitracker (which i always do) i can move 12 and fire the rail gun right??????
Yes, and if you have the multittracker, you can move, fore the railgun, and fire the burst cannons or smart missile system aswell!
Hey guys I have a question. My friend says that his gundrones can take the hits for his hammerhead. Can he do that?
Rail Gun is 50pts, isn't it?
Gun Drones on the Hammerhead [which MUST be bought BTW; they are default for Devilfish, not Hammerheads] CANNOT take hits for the Hammerhead. He might argue that the Gun Drones fly out to take the shot but remember that they are still attached to the Hammerhead. Drones taking hits only work for Tau infantry.
Frankly, I prefer 2 Hammerheads and 1 Broadside team. This is usually enough to take care of the tanks on field even against Iron Warriors or IG Armoured Company.
With a Multi-tracker you are considerd a Fast vehicle even though you still only move 12". Which means all weapons at 6" and 1 weapon at 12". With the new rules, you'll probably be able to fire the Rail Gun and the Burst Cannons/Smart Missile System [Move 12", fire 1 St6 or more, fire all Str 5 or less]. A target lock would be better in this case as you can fire the Rail Gun then engage another unit. If you're using the SMS, you can even shoot the guy hiding behind the rock.
