Welcome to Librarium Online!
1. what does MEQ mean? i keep hearing that abbreviation.
2. would a full unit of fireknives or deathrains be more efficient in a tournament list? i only want recommendations regarding a full unit of 3 of either types. i dont want to mix and match because of personal reasons. so in other words if i was to only choose either all 3 are fireknives or all 3 are deathrains then which option would be better?
thanks in advance.
MEQ means Marine EQuivalent mate.
It's basically T4 3+ save although necrons and sisters tend to count as MEQ's too.
Sorry I'm not a tau player so i can't help with the other thing.

If anyone wants any kind of help writing fluff for any kind of GW army just ask.
Basically it's anything with an equivalent armour save to marines. It's usually used to indicate what you really need to have good odds of killing them...for example, plasma weapons are considered a good bet against MEQ's because they negate the armour save. Same goes for Krak Missiles and so on, anything with an AP of 3 or more. The MEQ list also can have such annoying things as Striking Scorpions and Tau Crisis suits on it. :shifty:
I would say that 2-man teams are more efficient than 3-man teams. I'd never field a 3-man team of Crisis. Lose just one and you've surrendered VPs. Lose two, and not only do you have to make last man standing checks, but the unit no longer scores. Whereas a 2-man team is always fully scoring until entirely eliminated.
ninjabackhand: point and click, again, really? even after i give you an military term "shock tactic" you still call it point and click.

I tend to use 3 suit team of deathrains and 2 man teams of fireknifes.
a 3 man suit of deathrains gives you great firepower and really good range when combined with jump shoot jump. with target lockers it enables you to fire at different vehicles if you choose or fire all 6 shots at a squad which is great against marines. there range and the 6" jump back into cover tends to keep them safe enough that i never seem to lose them.
My 2 or 3 suit fireknife team tends to shadow my Fireknife 'el HQ up the board edge looking for MEQ's or MC's to kill. this team (with a TA) has decent firepower with their MP's at long range then as the plasma comes into range adds another powerful shot. inside 16" (rapid fire range and their assulat jump move) they are laying some serious MEQ and MC killing power down. Plus the missle pod can always pop a transport or dread if required.
so i'd say it depends on what your using in the rest of your list.
I tend to fill my elite slots with 3 suit deathrain team, 2 suit fireknife team and a 6 suit stealth team. decent MEQ/MC, Transport, infantry, horde and dread killing firepower.
my army list contains a 3 man team of HQ/bodyguard, fireknife config.
tho I actually use 2 fireknife 1 helios. just slightly modified. its a tankhunter/anti-heavy infantry squad.
this squad lets me fire at 2 tanks a turn (one close range FUSION, one further away 2 MP's) and heck the plasma S6 is still a possible light/back armor punching gun.
or fire 3 S6 ap2, and 4 S7 ap4, shots at mid-range 18"-30"
or 7 S6+ ap2, and 4 S7 ap4, shots at close-range. less than 18" all hitting on 3's and 2's
its a very nice unit but not exactally a cheap one, but man this one unit has consistantly won game after game for me, you could also add shield drones if you like but i never have needed to.

I beleive you would be better to go with a full unit of fireknives, but thats just me and how I play my crisis suits. You get the longer range with the missile pods to take out light tanks etc, and then the added bonus of some High AP plasma fire, to take out any termies or power armoured troops you may come across. The only thing better about the deathrains, is that you have a better chance of hitting. Personally, id go with the fireknives, a good multi purpose squad that has a weapon good for different targets.

Shas'vre can take items from the Battlesuit armoury, so a HWMT is ok for him to take. Why you would want to take the 'Vre upgrade though is a bit odd; no Special Issue weapons taken, so no real need IMHO to waste the points to make him a Vre, and taking Bodyguards only makes a target out of your Commander.
