    Against Marines

Alright. So my friends and I like to play small friendly games, mostly because we have short attention spans and the large battles usually end up with us wandering off and forgetting we started.
Anyway... for a 500 point list I'm not seening the effieciency in a shooty fex, mostly because my friends army holds little armour. So up against an infantry based marine army, Load up on Spine gaunts and Genestealers? And in that case where should extra points be spent?

Starters for an HQ, take some assault warriors; scything talons, rending claws, leaping & extended carpaces. You could take a hive tyrant but at this point size he can easily be most of your army.

Spinegaunts are good if you want a meat shield. Genestealers with extended carapaces are recommended, you won't be able to fit a whole lot of them into your army, but give them scuttlers too, and you should have a turn 2/3 charge with them.

Additionally although your friend doesn't use any armour, I would take a either a dakka fex; enhanced senses and 2 sets of devourers or a barbed strangler and a set of devourers. Both set ups are rather cheap. The first set up allows you to deal with infantry and light vehicles. The second set up allows you to deal with bigger vehicles if you ever need to and placing a barbed strangler on a squad of troops can cause a lot of hurt if followed up with devourers.

Try possibly a few Raveners with rending claws and scything talons. Send them to deal with armour and support them with other assaulting nasties. Don't go overboard on Gaunts and Hormagaunts as in such small games you can't guarrantee they will be easy to keep in line, this problem is due to having few synapse creatures.

I would suggest that you be decisive in order to win. Use an entirely assaulting swarm forget shooting anything. You don't have the units to waste in roles such as cannon fodder or cheap Hormagaunts to tie people up for a while.

Use a force of assault killers. Genestealers, Raveners, Gargoyles and Tyranid warriors with leaping, rending claws and scything talons. Make sure everybody is fast and rush up one side of the table and exterminate half of his army, then rush over to the rest of his army and exterminate that too.

In low-point matches, particularly Combat Patrol, I've found shooty warriors are actually very useful. My typical loadout is four with deathspitters, a venom cannon and rending claws, backed up by gaunts. You get a lot of wounds on the table, some S6 blasts and S7 anti-light-vehicle shooting, and a deadly close combat ability.

This being said, at 500 points with no restrictions, try a winged hive tyrant, a cheap carnifex, and enough rippers or gaunts to make it legal...

If there are no restrictions ...

Hive Tyrant - 2 TL Devourers, Enhanced Senses, Toxin Sacs
Hive Tyrant - 2 TL Devourers, Enhanced Senses, Toxin Sacs

    8 Spinegaunts
    8 Spinegaunts

    1 Ravener w/ RC/ST
    1 Ravener w/ RC/ST
    1 Ravener w/ RC/ST

    Zoanthrope w/ Warp Blast

    497 points

I seriously doubt there are many 500 point marine lists that can handle that. Keep any mega melee specialists away from the tyrants with the spinegaunts. Countercharge with the raveners ... keep them and zoanthrope behind the tyrants until they're safely able to get their shots or charges off. Kill tanks with tyrants in melee (6+2d6 on vehicles) or zoanthrope warp blast. Any marine or terminator unit, kill it with 24 BS4 S5 re-roll miss re-roll wound devourer shots/turn from the tyrants and 15 rending attacks on charge from the raveners. Plus, never underestimate a spinefist

I wouldn't worry about fexes unless you know he's bringing like a tank and a dread or something odd like that. Then tweak the list to get another zoanthrope or a sniperfex or something. You still in a 500 should have a smaller board one would think, and I don't see why you can't just get raveners into the tank or the tyrants eventually. They aren't going to have enough vehicle firepower to get your tyrants in that small a game.

    Tad cheese though.

I find that the Zoanthrope with warpblast is the best for dealing with marines. They have an AP 3 and shoot a blast weapon so they are excellent for taking down marines.

I actually disagree, fwiw. The Zoanthrope, despite it's 2+ save, can only suffer two wounds before dying. In return, you hit 50% of the time, and unless the marine is a fool you're going to nail one troop and nick one of two others with the partial rolls. This'll give you two hit with a 3+ to wound. Over a game, assuming you fire every single turn and there's no cover, you'll hit 6 marines, and wound 4. This means that in an entire game, a zoanthrope will kill 4 marines if he always has a target and doesn't die, and if the marines don't ever use cover.

As mentioned in other places, however, devourer-armed critters put far more wounds per turn on marines, and subsequently kill far more, b/c they fail armor saves inevitably. The Tyranid army is built around rending and monstrous creatures ignoring armor in melee, and tons of bullets getting around armor at ranged. Use 'em that way
