I have found one of the old 2nd edition Hive tyrants, lying around my house. It is a smaller model than the current one and because of it's smaller size I was considering converting it into a kind of cheap version of a Hive tyrant.
One Hive tyrant.
Biomorphs= Extended carapace, flesh hooks.
Bioweapons= Spinefists, rending claws.
Total= 110 points.
The idea would be that it can still provide the synapse power on a very tough target but will cost a limited number of points. Making it a problem for opponents but still not cost much points.
Also I have the old model so I think I would like to do something with it as it looks a bit small to get the level of biomorphing etc that the bigger Tyrants get.
Here is a link to the model if anybody wonders which model I am talking about. Games Workshop Online Store — Classic Tyranids Hive Tyrant (Original)
Sounds like a pretty nifty idea for a cheap tyrant. But I would suggest replacing the rending claws with scything talons, since its already a monstrous creature and ignores armor.

Ahh Brother Leech, I thought this was a terrible idea and that you were only joking! Now however youve peaked my curiosity and id like to know how the tyrant fair in battle!
First of all i agree talons would be better, however i loath wasting the two gun rule that MC's get. I reckon your wasting a valuable slot in every turn by mixing up CC and ranged weapons so would suggest 2 sets of spine fists giving you 6 S5 shots instead of a measly 3. For cheapness sake id drop the EC and maybe take toxin sacs to up those shots to S6. You dont really need enhanced senses due to the twin linking, but you can take them AND sacs for less than the EC. Better yet, drop EC and spend just 20 points more for a guard, and then your sorted for CC too!
If it were my choice, id have Tyrant, 2x TL Spine Fists, Flesh hooks, Guard. 128 points
Its not my choice though and your tyrant might well be better! Go with your instinct. And stop with the 'Perhaps they can be converted to look more scything less rending'. You know fine well your up to the task of converting them :yes:
I agree with Macewind, if you want it to shoot, go with the double guns. Although, you'd be better to just go all out with double Devourers- and I slap on Warp Blast, too. Coupled with Guard, the shooting versitility is just awesome, with the Guard for added punch in HTH.
Yet the point of your post was about cheapness, in which case, I'd say go for Scything Talons and Rending Claws, don't even bother about trying to spew a few average shots. You'd probably be hiding from big guns until you get somewhere anyways, and if you got close to a potential meal, you wouldn't wanna be killing off models that will stop you from assaulting!
Rending would help out the Hivie's average Strength against armour, and you never go wrong with Scything Talons
You have, though, made a decision for me- I shall make my own unused 2nd ed Carni into a double Devourer/WBlast Hivie with Guard... then, they would really look like a blister on the battlefield, and really get the 'annoying factor ' in full gear, ready to absorb everything thrown at it

I think I need extended carapace or it will die very quickly. The idea I had was a kind of 'bait Tyrant'. Important enough to get attention but expendable. The scything talons is a possiblity. It would make it nastier. I will have to change how I see it in my head and cook up where they would go, postion etc.
Now I am unsure:cry:, but thanks to people for good help.
I dont' have my codex on me, but I think if you played him as modeled (Venomcannon, scything talons, and maybe enhanced senses) you would have a pretty cheap tyrant that would help out with what Nids need most, skimmer shooting, and he could advance to draw fire from your fexes as once he is near combat he will draw some attention even though he doesn't really deserve it.
If you want it cheap plus your RCs on it, you could actually put two set of RCs on him.
Would not make much sense profile-wise, but that goes for taking one set of RCs as well.
If I wanted a baittyrant, I'd probably go for the double Spinefist Tyrant without anything extra.
The more I think about it, the less likely it is that I would ever field such a Tyrant.
Considering that you could get a nice Flak-Tyrant with two sets of Devourers for the additional cost of two termagaunts, compared to the cheapest Version of the Spine-Tyrant, it is just no viable option.
You get more range and many more shots, which make up the reduced strength and they are synch anyway.
Even the walking Devourer-Tyrant with TS looks better on the sheet than the Devourer-Fex.
A lot more shots
same cost (nearly)
But I am drifting from the subject of the thread here. sorry
I keep hearing people refer to Tyrants w/out 2+ armor saves as too easy to kill, and can't disagree more. The only time this is the case is when a list is full of expensive models, and not enough units to target, making the loss of your tyrant too difficult to bear. Who cares if he dies? Make lists that can tolerate their loss easily.
The being said - enhanced senses/toxin sacs/2 twinlinked devourers for 121 points is about the best "cheap" value tyrant money can buy. It's not enough bait to draw too much fire, but your opponent will waste shots on it and not do enough to kill it. By turn 1 or 2 it'll be in range of targets, and will obliterate 5-man marine squads, or much larger non-MEQ squads with every round of fire.
I think what you're getting for 110 points isn't valuable enough. You can swap some things around and get a 120-ish point tyrant who is extremely useful, but not big or pointsy enough to draw enough fire to keep him from earning his points back - something they do very easily.

So there are a few options. The first cheap Spine tyrant. The Spine tyrant with no spinefists and scything talons and then the slightly more expensive devourer Tyrant.
I am thinking of a devourer Tyrant in the future and using another model. That said it is a good idea. But I'll want a devourer Tyrant with it all, toxin sacs, enhanced senses and possibly wings.
Tyrant guard like psychic powers can be added when or if I want them. At the moment I am wondering to keep it super cheap with the spne fists or exchange them for scything talons, possibly removing the extended carapace and taking other biomorphs as an alternative to make it nastier. I'm not sure what those biomorphs would be though.
