Welcome to Librarium Online!
I'm happy about the upgrades to the Avatar in the new codex. I really like the background of the avatar and have always wondered why they made the wraithlord so much tougher than the avatar in the last codex, seeing as how the avatar is supposed to be a god incarnate.
Anyways I wanted to ask if players prefer fielding a wraithlord or avatar in their army and why.
Has anyone ever run an avatar and three wraithlord, that has got ot be insane.
Wraithlord for me, the avatar is nice but when somebody sees a god coming, he would be the main target for line of fire. The wraithlord has better weapons than the avatar
Another thing is the strength and the toughness, way better then the avatar.
The only thing that the wraithlord needs basiclly is a warlock/spiritseer or then comes the wraithsight test and it hurts real bad if you fail it. Plus the idea that the avatar has a 4+ invernable save to boot. Still I'd pefer the wraithlord anyways.
I have always preferred the wraithlord over the avatar and here's why.
Both are excellent at hand to hand(though the avatar is quite a bit better).
Both are really tough and really strong.
What the wraithlord has an advantage that the avatar doesn't is the reach with the ranged weapons. The whaling doom can be used as a thrown ranged weapon, but its not that far, the wraithlord can punish the enemy all the way down until they meet. Overall the wraithlord has excellent tactical flexability.
Though the morale boosting power of the avatar is excellent too. I think in the end it comes down to how you want to play your army.
I magine a "old style" guardian army with a bunch of platforms, and other shooty elements being boosted by the avatar so they never run away, they just shoot, and shoot and shoot. Until when finally assaulted, the avatar comes in to hack up the oposition.

WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
Wraithlord for me, my reason is rather simple and mundane lol....Wraithlord has guns XD
I use both regularly. Each is tough in its own way (t8 on one, good invulnerable save and extra wound on the other). The wraithlord is a better shooter but worse in combat. The wraithlord usually wins combat by just killing one or two guys and then having them flee. The avatar guts the enemy. The avatar makes your troops fearless which is handy.
If I was told I could only bring one or the other, I'd bring the Avatar everytime. The Wraithlord is nice and shooty, but so are plenty of other elements of the Eldar army. Nothing in the Eldar army though, can match the sheer destructive ferocity of an Avatar tearing through anything in close combat.
Everytime I've brought a Wraithlord, it's been a fire magnet for lascannons. And quite frankly, nothing can be done about that. I rarely ever get a chance where I can get my Wraithlord in a position to fire more then twice in a game. I've only ever once had it get into close combat.
Everytime I bring the Avatar though, it makes it to Close Combat, and I've even used it a couple times to succesfully drop tanks and dreads. It's never failed me, and the Wraithlord has time and time again.

I have to agree with those that say that they are good for different things.
If I want a total fire magnet and close combat monster then I take the avatar. If I want ranged shootiness then I take the wraithlord.
To me this is like comparing an apple to a tomato. they are both fruits but I wouldn't ever make a Bacon lettuce and apple sandwich.

tend to agree with greymonk and IA, it is not like compairing like for like except for one thing:
Your opponent needs something to shoot at, they both represent similar targets, for that reason alone I would try and get both in if I fielded one
Everything you have been told is a lie!
I´d say the Avatar is more fun to field, and better if a themed army where you can exploit his inspiring presence(sp?) to the maximum. He also makes your opponents avoid H2H which can be handy around objectives.
WL is a fair bit more allround, kind of like moving fire support which also draws fire from your skimmers.
Both are really good though!

The thing about wraithlords is that you can have more than one :shifty:. But honestly this topic can go on forever because it is debatable on who is better all around.
