Tide of Iron: Why Play It?

Tide of Iron: Why Play It?

Long time ago I wrote a review of one amazing game called Tide of Iron. For those that are not familiar, Tide of Iron or TOI is a WW2 game for 2 to 4 players. It uses hex system and uses mechanics that are not much different than the rest war games with similar thematic. However, this is a Fantasy Flight Game and it looks amazing. Well, all of their games look amazing, even ones that are total waste of money, like World of Warcraft board game. This game might not be among best rated WW2 games but for some reason attracted me long time ago. I am a huge fan of WW2 and games that are based on it. I will agree that there are better WW2 board games than this one, but for some reason I love it. You will never be able to compare it to Flames of War or Combat Commander, but people still play and enjoy it. It is probably because it has quite simple rules and even those that have never played board games can learn to play it in no time

Celyne – Warwitch Siren

Celyne – Warwitch Siren

Here is another mini I finished up last weekend, Celyne. Named after an awesome nWo victim, she has already caused some mischief on the battlefield in yesterday’s game against Mr. Terrible’s Khador scum. Game-wise, she is a great addition to an Iron Lich’s bag’o’tricks. I am not 100% happy with the paintjob, and there is a nagging voice telling me to glue a screw to the base, but she is “table ready”. Or it might just be the pictures. I will endeavor to go back to her, when the projects quiet down… Until next round, be well.

Finished: Refurbished Dark Angels Rhino “Gabriel”

Finished: Refurbished Dark Angels Rhino “Gabriel”

Hey guys! So I was approached with an interesting commission about a week ago. The client had recently gotten back into 40k with his brother, and was hoping to get an old Rhino he’d put together a long time ago back up to a fighting standard. Here’s a picture of it before paint was stripped: As you can see, some thick paint, lots of glue seams, and some off-kilter assembly. After a dip in some Simple Green and some scrubbing with the trusty Smells Like Toothbrush, I got her down to: Kinda a meh picture next to my new Khorne Rhino, but you get the idea. Thanks to the primer coat of Bone, not all the paint was going to come off. Plus, in some areas, the coat had kinda cracked, almost like dried mud. You can also see, I added a brand new top hatch, as well as an armoured front, made up of an additional Rhino front plate, to fill some wonky gaps from prior assembly. I also popped the Techmarine’s arms off and replaced them, namely to add a Dark Angels Shoulderpad. Finally, after a couple hours of work, here’s the final result: Lots of freehand on this badboy! You can see some of the seams and replacement parts too. I, unfortunately, couldn’t fix everything, but the model looks so much better now! Techmarine’s done in a nice, Bright red in order to keep the Rhino from going Dark Angels to Christmas Angels.

Pair A Dice Games RTT: Game 1 – 11/26/2011

Pair A Dice Games RTT: Game 1 – 11/26/2011

That is right, Snake-Eyes and I drove an hour to play against each other. I don't mind playing him in a tournament, but in the first round a wee bit of effort is all it takes to move two players so they are not paired up against one another; especially if they always play one another or carpooled. Anyways, on to the game which paired Snake-Eyes and I against each other.

Watch out! Fun Ahead

Watch out! Fun Ahead

If you read around the 40k blogosphere you’ll soon become familiar with the popular dichotomy between fluffy and competitive army building and play. In one camp are those who feel that winning is the most important part of the game; sometimes disparagingly labelled as Win At Any Cost or WAAC gamers. In the other camp are those who feel that being true to the background (or fluff) is the most important part of the game or, perhaps more accurately, hobby. The signs of a WAAC gamer are manifold if you believe everything you read. The WAAC gamer is known to buy in painted armies which are cloned from optimised lists published by internet gurus and GT winners. They interpret the rules in the most devious way possible, pore over army books looking for fiendish loopholes and combinations of doom and then when they’re ready they set out hunting for baby seals (inexperienced players) to prey upon. The signs of the fluffy gamer are equally replete. Character models have names drawn from the universe, their models behave on the table top in the way you imagine they would in the fiction and are equipped and dressed accordingly. The background and universe even affect list design and the fluffy army builder will ensure that divine numbers are used in squad sizes, proportions are maintained and colour schemes are adhered to strictly
