Tau Tactics – Close Combat

Tau Tactics – Close Combat

Ask anyone what the biggest weakness of the Tau army is and they’re almost certainly going to say close combat. With the exception of a couple of units (Farsight and Aun’shi), every unit in the codex is pretty useless in combat. Fair enough crisis suits can have their moments but generally combat is something you want to avoid as a Tau player. This post will discuss some of the options available for keeping combat to a minimum and therefore allowing you to shoot for longer (which is what you want to do right?). Deployment Keeping Tau out of combat starts early. Deploy poorly and you could be losing units a lot earlier than you should. Pre-measurement is your friend here. Remember that most of your weaponry has decent range so there’s no need to deploy your forces very far forward at all. Most combat orientated armies are going to need to close range on you quickly so you needn’t worry about being out of range as it won’t stay that way for long.

Tau Broadsides – HRR or HYMP? There’s only one way to find out….

Tau Broadsides – HRR or HYMP? There’s only one way to find out….

Since writing my article about the rules for broadsides in the Tau codex I’ve been thinking a lot about which is better between the heavy rail rifle (HRR) and high-yield missile pod (HYMP). I’m going to talk through it here to hopefully help me make my mind up. I’ve said many times in the past that I’m not a big fan of math-hammer but in this case I think it’s necessary to back up what I’m saying. The Importance (or not) of AP1 When I was originally reviewing the broadsides I talked about the importance of AP1. I still think it's a huge plus for the rail rifles in that, should you penetrate, you've got a 50:50 chance of destroying the vehicle outright. You're always going to Stun it too as a minimum.

40K Battle Brothers – Army Painting Competition (pic heavy)

40K Battle Brothers – Army Painting Competition (pic heavy)

Sunday’s painting competition was for entire armies. Usually they split it down into individual forces (i.e. two forces make up a doubles team) but this time it was for the whole 1,500pt army. There were several examples of where one half was outstanding but was let down by the other half. The weaker halves were by no means poor and I’d be happy if I could paint even half as well but the proximity to a better army made them weaker by comparison. The eventual winner was a full army of stunning pieces. The sort of army that amazes you but at the same time depresses you that you’ll never produce anything like that kind of quality in your own armies. Finally, here’s several shots of the winner’s army:

The Alpha Legiondary Journey Part 1: Goal, Concept and Evaluating Codex: CSM

The Alpha Legiondary Journey Part 1: Goal, Concept and Evaluating Codex: CSM

Welcome to ” The Alpha Legiondary Journey ” series, which is going to be my way of communicating, sharing and brainstorming with you – the blogosphere and wargaming community – as I slowly create a 2,000 points Alpha Legion-themed list to be used with the Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition ruleset. Originally I was thinking of calling this segment ” Alpha Legioning it Up “, but I’m pretty sure the fact that English is not my native tongue isn’t the only reason why this title is unpronounceable. Yeesh. My name is Skarvald the Troll-faced and I will be your host. Haha. Let’s start with the foundation of what “The Alpha Legiondary Journey” is trying to accomplish: GOAL:

40K Battle Brothers – Legends Painting Competition (pic heavy)

40K Battle Brothers – Legends Painting Competition (pic heavy)

On the Saturday the Battle Brothers organisers run a painting competition for individual models with the full army competition on the Sunday. One of the things I’ve always liked about the doubles events is that armies have to be fully painted which makes for some great looking battles. This time the Legends competition had very few entries in all but the “Hero of Legend” category which I think is a shame since I’d seen plenty of suitable candidates as I wandered around. Here’s a selection from the cabinets. Beast of Legend This was the only category we entered using one of our dreadknights. The eventual winner was the minotaur chaos daemon thingy (I really ought to know the name). Monument of Legend There really wasn’t many entries in this category and the stand-out piece and eventual winner were these fantastic objective markers. Engine of Legend Again, very few entries but the winner was the mauler-fiend and deservedly so as the panels were stunningly painted.

40K Battle Brothers – Day One Battle Reports

40K Battle Brothers – Day One Battle Reports

Here’s the first three games from our weekend at Warhammer World. I posted our list up yesterday for those who are interested. Game One – Titanic Fenrisians vs. GK/DA Our opponents, Chris and Elliot, were also fielding a similarly equipped dreadknight (no sword) supported by 5 GK terminators with a grand master, 5 DA scouts behind a quad gun aegis, 5 DW terminators and 5 DW knights with Belial. The GK terminators wouldn’t do our dreadknights any favours if we got too close thanks to psyk-out grenades and the deathwing knights would be no picnic either as they’d be likely to “Smite” a dreadknight down. We were playing Crusade (5) on Hammer and Anvil. Our opponents won the first turn and deployed with terminators on each side and the scouts within the aegis line in the back corner. Belial and the DW knights would be deepstriking. We deployed with our two dreadknights either side of our strike squad hoping they’d jump the dreadknight far enough for us to get in combat and bring it down turn one

40K Battle Brothers – Tournament Aftermath

40K Battle Brothers – Tournament Aftermath

Once again, Matt and I were down at Warhammer World this weekend for the 40K Battle Brothers (which replaced GW’s doubles events). After toying with taking a Tau/GK list, we tested it out against Graham and Andy from Claws and Fists and decided that it wasn’t as good as we thought. Therefore, we returned to our old faithful Titanic Fenrisians (GK/SW) with the following list: 1500pts of Titanic Fenrisians Coteaz 10-man Strike Squad (Psybolt, 2 Psycannons) 2 x 3 Warrior Acolytes 1 x 4 Warrior Acolyes Nemesis Dreadknight (Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator, Greatsword) Nemesis Dreadknight (Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator) Wolf Priest (Saga of the Hunter, Plasma Pistol) Rune Priest (Runic Armour, Jaws, Lightning) 10 Grey Hunters (Plasma, Melta, Wulfen, Standard) 9 Grey Hunters (Melta, Wulfen, Standard) in a drop pod Not a huge difference from the previous incarnations of our doubles army. The thunderwolves are gone sadly but they’re replaced by a Rune Priest and the Purifiers are swapped for a full strength Strike Squad. As you can see, some lists would be no problem for us whilst others, particularly flyers, would be almost impossible for us to beat. Flyers don't bother us too much though as they're mostly geared up for
