Review of my New Year’s Resolutions (early I know!)

Review of my New Year’s Resolutions (early I know!)

Well it may only be June but, as I mentioned the other day, I’ve met one of my New Year targets by having more than 200 followers. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read this blog. It’s especially impressive when you consider how wordy my posts normally are! Anyway, realising I’d hit that target half way through the year got me thinking about how my other resolutions were coming along. Attend More Tournaments Well so far I’m not doing all too well on this front. We may have been to the GW Doubles in January (and won it) but the only other tournament I’ve played in this year was Blog Wars 5. Obviously there’ll be Blog Wars 6 and the Doubles again in September but it’d be good to get to a few more tournaments in the next six months. I’ve been looking in various places across the interweb and I’ve struggled to find events that really appeal to me. Matt and I will, however, be attending a small doubles event at the Outpost in Sheffield on July 13th. There are still plenty of places left if anyone is interested by the way

Rok Da Vote: Eldar Codex – 6th Edition

Rok Da Vote: Eldar Codex – 6th Edition

The long-awaited Eldar codex has arrived and at my FLGS we have no less than 4-5 players playing them on a given 40K night. From everything I’ve seen, the Eldar players are loving the new codex, at least compared to what passed as one prior. So, as always, looking to… Read More The post Rok Da Vote: Eldar Codex – 6th Edition appeared first on Creative Twilight .

Blog Wars 5 Painting Competition (pic heavy)

Blog Wars 5 Painting Competition (pic heavy)

Alongside the tournament itself I always run a two part painting competition. The first part is the obligatory Best Painted Army whereas the second is part of Blog Wars’ focus on Special Characters namely Best Painted Special Character. As ever there were some excellent entries, there were a few armies we’ve seen before alongside some excellent new entries. Best Painted Army The winner in this category was Hendrik Müller-Joswig who is Blog Wars’ first ever international player having travelled from Germany for the event! Whilst he may have placed 28th in the tournament his army is a worthy winner with 8 votes. Another notable mention goes to Chris Benstead's Chaos Space Marine force. Chris has previously had painting

Blog Wars 5 – The Aftermath (and 200 followers!)

Blog Wars 5 – The Aftermath (and 200 followers!)

Before I go any further I wanted to point out that at the start of the year one of my resolutions was to push for 200 followers. Well we’re about half way through 2013 and I’m up to 200 today!! I’ll have to look through my other resolutions and see how I’m getting on with them! Anyway, a big thanks to everyone who reads, the followers thing means more to me than pageviews so I really appreciate it. Blog Wars 5 was held at the North West Gaming Centre in Stockport today. We had new record of 30 players all competing for the crown which had been previously controlled by Andy Humphris. I knew we’d be having a new winner today and, without any further beating about the bush, I’m pleased to announce that winner as Franco Marrufo with his dirty, dirty broadside spam Tau and Eldar list. He never really looked in danger of not winning throughout the day but it would’ve been interesting to see him play Andy for it. Maybe next time eh? Chris Benstead took second with a Chaos Space Marines army that he hadn’t used before the day. Respect to Chris for that but it doesn’t say much about the rest of us! In third place was Rob McDougall who beat his good mate Frank Marsh by a single point.

On 40K Hiatus: Duration Undetermined

On 40K Hiatus: Duration Undetermined

No, I am not leaving 40K. No, I am not quitting 40K. I am taking a hiatus, a break. Now, don't get me wrong, I was all motivated for 6th edition and I find it extremely fun to play. I even painted up 2000 points for the Independent Characters Hobby Challenge. However, interest in the game locally has dramatically waned, to the point it is hard to find a game. Therefore, I have decided that I will take this opportunity to… Read more »

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Heavy Support (Part 1)

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Heavy Support (Part 1)

Another packed section in this bulging codex with 8 choices for 3 slots in sub-2K lists. This is probably the most difficult section to choose from. Pretty much every option here is viable but some really stand out as excellent. I’d started this off as a single post but I’ve got too much to say about some of the units so I’ve split it into two. Dark Reapers Dark Reapers have always been great for dealing with MEQ with their long range S5 AP3 weapons. They’re far from cheap though costing a whopping 30pts each. That’s pretty high for a T3 3+ save model no matter what their damage output. They have the option to take what are essentially krak missiles too but that boosts them to 38pts a piece! They’re not awful and thanks to their rangefinders they can be the bane of skimmers and bikes alike. Sadly the suffer the same problems that Space Marine devastators do. They’re far too static.

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Troops

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Troops

Continuing with the look through the new Eldar codex we’re onto the Troops seciton. Actually the smallest of the bulging FOC slots, there’s still 5 units to choose from here. Bear in mind you can look at taking wraithguard and wraithblades if you’ve gone for a spiritseer but I’ll talk about them in Elites. There’s also the small matter of the wave serpent…. Dire Avengers Rules aside, the biggest problem with Dire Avengers at the moment is the disgusting rise in price. They’ve effectively doubled in price now as you get 5 in a box instead of 10. They’re still a 4+ save and benefit from 18″ shuriken catapults which is a significant improvement over the guardian ones. That means Battle Focus can prevent them from ever being in range of an enemy who wants to charge or shoot two shots with Rapid Fire weapons. Strangely they also gained Counter-attack which doesn’t totally make sense for a shooty unit. Sadly they’ve lost the previous codex version of Bladestorm (I wish they’d come up with new names when they change a rule) which allowed them unleash a hail of fire in exchange for not shooting next turn.

Get 25% off 40K stuff at Blog Wars!

Get 25% off 40K stuff at Blog Wars!

Just a quick update. I’ve been speaking to Darren at the North West Gaming Centre where Blog Wars 5 will be held on 22nd June. Everything is confirmed for the day which is the first bit of news but the other thing is that as I mentioned at the time, all attendees get 25% off 40K stuff from their store. As I understand it they keep a very minimal stock so what Darren has suggested is that if people email through their orders

Battle Report – Blog Wars Warm-up – Tau vs. CSM/Daemons & Tau vs. GK

Battle Report – Blog Wars Warm-up – Tau vs. CSM/Daemons & Tau vs. GK

Matt and I have been working on our Blog Wars 5 lists (tickets still available from the link on the right) for a while now. I’ve switched from DE to DA to Tau and Matt has been trying to find a CSM/Daemons list that he’s happy with. Today was another test game for us. Matt would be trying out a new Chaos list followed by a Grey Knights alternative and I’d be using my “backup” Tau list that requires less painting than my planned list. Oh and it’s cheaper too as I don’t need to buy any broadsides. Here’s what I’m running: 1,850 pts of Tau Commander (fusion, plasma, TL, VRT, iridium) Ethereal 12 Fire Warriors w/ Devilfish (d.pod) 12 Fire Warriors 12 Fire Warriors 11 Kroot plus hound 11 Kroot plus hound 3 Crisis Shas’ui (twin-linked fusion, plasma) 2 Crisis Shas’ui (MP, twin-linked MP), Shas’vre (2 pods, PEN) Riptide (ion, fusion, EWO, VT) 7 Pathfinders 7 Pathfinders Sun Shark (twin-linked MP, decoys) Hammerhead (Longstrike, subs, SMS, spines, d.pod) I’ll run down how the list works in another post but I’m pretty sure you can imagine. Anyway, onto the battle reports. Game One – Tau vs. CSM/Daemons Matt was running 2 princes, lord of change, pink horrors, typhus, 2 x 10 zombies, 2 heldrakes, 3 solo obliterators.
