My beef with Chaos Daemons

My beef with Chaos Daemons

I have been upset with the Chaos Daemons codex since the book hit the shelves back in March. Yup I was one of those who spammed Flamers and Screamers and those units getting nerfed was well deserved, but they didn’t need to be hit that hard. Though this was one of the many problems with Chaos Daemons. Random is Random I know it is in the nature of fluff of Chaos Daemons to be random, but I really cannot be dealing with it. I find it makes games a lot more long winded as you have to make note of the random gifts you roll for and also random psychic powers – that’s two things randomly rolled for. I know you can remember the abilities easy enough, but when learning lists it makes it tough as you need to remember what model has what. I know you can just write them down on some paper etc, but I do not want bits of paper and other bits floating about while I am trying to play toy soldiers. It’s just another thing you have to remember about and it isn’t second nature like other 40k rules. Lets get ready to suuuuuuuuuuuccccccccccccccccccck it Because that’s exactly what the troops do; suck donkey big. All of the troops blow goats.

Competitive Chaos Space Marines?

Competitive Chaos Space Marines?

I have been trying to get on with Chaos Marines since the codex dropped October last year and now it is doing my fruit in. Every time a 6th ed codex is released Chaos Marines drop further behind and become an even weaker codex. It frustrates me that Dark Angels get split fire and twin-linked for Deathwing and hit and run and Scout for Ravenwing while Tau get supporting fire, night vision on Battlesuits and an Ethereal who has a special rule bubble, then you got Eldar with the cool bladestorm and battle focus rules. Even Chaos Daemons get some action with the random warp table and interesting grimnoire and portalglyph. Don’t get me wrong, I am not hating these armies, I am just fed up of Chaos Marines getting the short end of the stick. Before I even got the CSM codex someone told me it is like the original codex with a few new units and that I would be wasting my time. Nine months later and I am starting to agree with that person. I previously wrote a post discussing that CSM doesn't have any cool rules like those mentioned in the above codices, hell CSM have to pay for their army wide rule, which sucks ass. The post concluded that CSM need brute power in order to get things done:

Army Lists: Grey Knights ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points

Army Lists: Grey Knights ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points

Another ‘no spam’ army for you guys. I thought it would be nice to follow on from Chaos Daemons with Grey Knights. Don’t ask if this is any good though, it’s very elite! Grey Knights ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points HQ Grand Master – nemesis halberd, rad grenades & psychotroke grenades Librarian – nemesis halberd, might of titan, sanctuary & the shrouding Troops 6 x Terminators – psycannon, 1 x nemesis daemon hammer, 1 x nemesis warding stave & 2 x nemesis halberds 6 x Terminators – psycannon, 1 x nemesis daemon hammer, 1 x nemesis warding stave & 2 x nemesis halberds 5 x Strike Squad – psycannon 5 x Strike Squad – psycannon Fast Attack Stormraven – twin-linked lascannon & twin-linked multi melta Stormraven – twin-linked lascannon & twin-linked multi melta Heavy Support Dreadknight – heavy incinerator Dreadknight – heavy incinerator Fortifications Aegis Defence Line – quad gun Total: 2 ,000 As mentioned at the start of the post, this is an elite army, so every loss is going to count. The idea is the Grand Master brings some extra abilities to the table such as scout the Terminators if you go second and this will allow for a turn 1 charge. Or make those Dreadknight troops if playing objective games. What about giving those Terminators counter-attack? Depending on how you use the G.M’s abilities depends upon deployment; really you want the Terminators on foot or you want to keep things hidden until they come in. What you could do is deploy the ADL forward and scout the Terminators behind it, sure they have 2+ armour but now they have 4+ cover as well. The G.M will give one unit psychos and rads while the Libby can protect both units with shrouding and stealth – that’s a 3+ cover behind the aegis now and any units trying to assault the Terminators will be taking dangerous terrain tests. The Dreadknights will have to deploy as far forward as they can to get into the battle quickly, hopefully they can be in the fight by turn 2, though turn 3 is realistic. Strike Knights just camp and lay down dakka

Army Lists: Chaos Daemons ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points

Army Lists: Chaos Daemons ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points

Another no spam for you to have a gander at, this time Chaos Daemons. Chaos Daemons ‘No Spam’ – 2,000 points HQ Daemon Prince – daemon of slaanesh, warp forged armour, daemonic flight & 2 x greater rewards Daemon Prince – daemon of slaanesh, warp forged armour, daemonic flight & 2 x greater rewards 2 x Heralds of Tzeentch – mastery level 3 psker, locus of conjuration & 1 x exalted reward Troops 10 x Pink Horrors 10 x Pink Horrors 10 x Plaguebearers 10 x Plaguebearers Fast Attack 16 x Flesh Hounds 16 x Flesh Hounds Heavy Support Soul Grinder – daemon of tzeentch & phlegm bombardment Soul Grinder – daemon of tzeentch & phlegm bombardment Total: 1,992 The Princes ideally will be swapping one greater reward for the lash of despair, they attack flyers or zoom down the flanks to they can little return fire. Soul Grinders can either take a flank with the Princes or roll up the centre, their phlegm should be in range either way. Flesh Hounds will move up the centre, so you have two fast moving units on the ground then two fast moving units in the air and two clunking metal things coming behind. All of the units are supporting together and while they maybe spread out, it will force the opponent to pick what to focus fire on and the opponent’s guns will be spread out – I suggest you only do this if you’re going second. If you do go first then just put everything on a single flank and do refused flank deployment or drop it all in the centre so you can go either way. The Horrors can move up mid field and camp with the Heralds. You can switch one of the Heralds’ powers for prescience if you like, however I would be tempted to use all mastery levels to fire flickering fire; in total the unit will be firing 6D6 shots.

Top Chaos Daemon Units

Top Chaos Daemon Units

Want to know the best units in the Chaos Daemons codex? Then take a butchers below. * These units are not ranked in any particular order 1. Bloodthirster The Bloodthirster is the ultimate bad ass and taker of names. The big red dude rocks with a typical monstrous creature profile and brings a mighty WS10, BS10, W5, I9 and A6 – this dude is seriously laying down the hurt. The Bloodthirster comes with a 3+ armour save, lash of khorne (S6 AP2 pistol) and axe of khorne (wound of 6+ is instagib). As the ‘Thirster is a daemon of khorne it gets furious charge, S7 smashy. Bloodthirster has options of daemonic rewards; best taking a couple of greater rewards as they give survivable buffs. If you take the normal greater reward, which is the blade of blood, then the Bloodthirster gets the rampage special rule (+D3 attacks if out numbered in close combat) and would get

New FAQs on the GW Website

New FAQs on the GW Website

Most people will have probably seen them by now but yesterday GW posted some new FAQs for the current collection of codices. It might be coincidence but it seems that they always release them the week before I go to one of their doubles events. Anyway, as usual here’s a rundown of the most significant changes. Nothing too exciting except for the Tau thing at the bottom. Rulebook Stats can be modified to 0 except Initiative which can’t go below 1. Wounds from blast markers need to be kept separate as they’re capable of hitting models that the firer can’t see. Makes sense I suppose as a high explosive round could still hit those guys round the corner of the building with shrapnel. Split fire can’t be used to blow up a vehicle for the rest of the squad to fire on the occupants.
