Thinking Ahead: Hobby Roadmap

Thinking Ahead: Hobby Roadmap

Ok, so I haven’t posted in awhile, been busy with some dietary changes and some extra workout routines, haven’t had time for 40k. But, I’ve been following the blogosphere and thinking about the next year of 40k purchases. I’m beginning to get a roadmap of the purchases I’ll be making. I have a backburner plan to do a pre-heresy army, a sort of slow, methodical project. Of course, FW’s shipping prices make buying a few hundred dollars’ worth a better deal. My only dilemma is what army to build. I had originally wanted to do Thousand Sons after reading Prospero Burns, but honestly I’ve lost interest in the color scheme and particular modeling theme. The book was great but I don’t think I could do something creative enough to stand with the brilliant 1k sons themed armies out there. If they do custom models for them, I will probably get a few to put in my CSM.

Thinking about 3rd party products

Thinking about 3rd party products

Ok, I’ve been all over the map with my articles lately, so expect some more repeats soon, I’m working on one about the Astral Claws chapter organisation now, along with a post of some of my own personal army fluff. Expect another article about my Death Guard too, along with a post on making zombies/cultists. This update is about a few 3rd party products I’m eyeing. I wanted to write about this after my post on hobby malaise, because honestly, 3rd party and out of production bits are some of the main reasons I enjoy building armies. For my Astral Claws I went primarily to eBay for out of production tanks and minis, and supplemented with some Forge World shoulder pads and IC’s. For my CSM I have 2 Blight Drones and a Daemon Prince converted from an Inquisitor model, who’s supposed to be Mortarion. There’s also my Land Raider Proteus with them. I haven’t found any worthwhile ‘Nid parts. Color scheme may change a bit For my Dark Angels, I bought the Chapterhouse Angels of Death doors and put them on my Land Raider Crusader.

Ian’s Death Guard Hobby Update

Ian’s Death Guard Hobby Update

Over the few months since the CSM book dropped, I have been doing a lot of work on various units, from independent characters, to building custom mutilators, to starting work on 2 spawn made from greenstuff/bits. This progress has been slow due to grad school eating up a lot of my time, but I finished my last class on Saturday, so I’ve been trying to make a push to get my army ready to put on the table. I’ve got a few lists kicking around (along with a few that use more of the undivided elements in my Red Corsairs, but that’s a whole other article/series), and all of them include at least 2 Plague Marine squads in Rhinos. I’m also planning to get ~90 zombies in the near future, specifically building them from the affordable Wargames Factory Shock Troops , which while less detailed than GW kits, will likely mash well with the zombie kits from mantic. I’m going to model them with pistols and knives so I can still run them as cultists for my death guard, enabling me to have different cultists for my two CSM forces, so I can run them solo or together. I built a lot of my CSM force last year, scuplting Plague Marines and converting loyalists into what would become my Red Corsair units. The army was setup with six Rhinos, all of which I planned to paint in the Corsairs scheme. But, at some point I picked up a spare set of Death Guard Rhino bits, so it was only a matter of time before I built a transport especially for my Plague Marines (The Blinded Eyes Warband). When I picked up the Megaforce this winter, I got a new Rhino Chassis, which kicked off a bit of a conversion spree. I built the Rhino and converted two more over to the corrupting influence of Nurgle

Ciaphas Cain – Hero of the Imperium!

Ciaphas Cain – Hero of the Imperium!

Taking a little break from the Leviathan to do some painting – gotta let the modelling batteries recharge for a bit! My buddy Dave let me know about a miniatures company called Cadwallon that I hadn’t seen before, and lurking in their “Legendarion” section was a rather striking model of the greatest (least), most heroic (stinking coward) Commissar ever to wear the cap and greatcoat – Ciaphas Cain ! Dave had ordered up their model for the Salamanders Primarch Vulkan and was kind enough to add Cain to the order for me as well. The models arrived quickly, though the ordering process was a little convoluted with some odd PayPal redirects that didn’t make either of us feel too confident, but all was well in the end.

What Has Science Done? – Retribution of Scyrah Phoenix – WIP

What Has Science Done? – Retribution of Scyrah Phoenix – WIP

With the success I had with my Dire Troll I decided to try my hand at a Warjack. After looking around the gallery at the Privateer Press site I decided that I would try airbrushing a Retribution of Scyrah model. I ordered the Hydra/Manticore/Phoenix kit and started thinking about my paint scheme. I knew I wanted a nice bright color scheme, but I couldn’t decide what the base color should be. I am already doing blue on my Trollbloods so I didn’t want that, yellow is just too much of a pain, I have some white/bone Chaos Space Marines, and I just didn’t want to do red – too much like Khador. This left me with green. I started planning out a progression of greens that I was going to use and then I saw these models over at Dakka. I was hooked – this is the color scheme I was going to use. I quickly ran into a problem.

Heresy Era World Eaters – Land Raiders painting in progress, part 2

Heresy Era World Eaters – Land Raiders painting in progress, part 2

A little more forward motion on the Heresy-era World Eaters Land Raiders – got all the metal areas blacked in, the Boltgun metal applied and a nice black wash over it, bringing the color down to a nice dark iron look.

iPhone and Android Paint Converter App

iPhone and Android Paint Converter App

Just stumbled across a nice little app for my phone that lets you select a color of paint from one brand and shows you the corresponding color from another brand. It supports Citadel, Reaper Master Series, Vallejo Game Color, and Vallejo Model Color. The app is called Paint Converter. It is available for the iPhone and Android. You can check out the developers webpage here. This is a great little app to have on your phone as it will save you the hassle of having to get up and go to the computer to look up a chart if you need this while painting.
