Fimir – Final Half Dead Update

Fimir – Final Half Dead Update

It’s with a final buffing of leathery skin and scape of rusty metal that I add the last three members of the half dead to the unit. It’s great to finish it. I had this idea wandering about my head for some time, and to see it done is pretty satisfying. Here’s some shots of the finished unit. Now to enjoy the finished unit high until it’s overshadowed by the next hobby compulsion, like deciding what colour to paint the boils on the back of the marlwyrms. Blacky green with some gloss varnish, methinks…

Fimir – What’s on the Table

Fimir – What’s on the Table

Just a quick post to reiterate that the fimir are still very much in progress, in case anyone was worried what with all the genestealer cult talk lately… At the moment I’m just finishing the last of the half dead. I have some basing to finish, and then they’re done! I’m very happy with them, and I’m looking forward to popping their cherry on the tabletop. Just hitting the painting table are the first of the marlwyrm monstrous cavalry. I’m considering how to paint the shields of the fimir riders. Some of the results of the verdigris effects I tried on the half dead should work great on the detail on the shields, which are from Scibor. I also have some drool techniques using various plastic glues to test before I apply them to the maw of the wyrms. Fun times!

Fimir – Army Building

Fimir – Army Building

With the fimir army coming back on track, it’s time to take stock. I have just under four months to get the army to two thousand points in time for it’s inaugural tournament as a full fimir force. I’ve already been grudged for match one, so the pressure is on. I’ve been tinkering with the list a little to fit in what I want to get done. The list is very much being considered from a painting point of view, so I don’t hold out a lot of hope for top table glory. I’ll need to paint a few more units for that. Here’s where we stand thus far:

Fimir – Half Dead Update 13

Fimir – Half Dead Update 13

And with a squelch of stinking black mud, the half dead return. May was a complete wash out for me on the hobby front. A perfect storm of deadlines conspired to keep me at work almost literally every waking moment. I would look forward to special treats such as ‘going to the toilet’ and ‘standing up’ . Such was my lot. Not that ye care, you bunch of heartless fiends. Very well then, onto the meat of the post. As soon as it became even remotely possible to get some hobby in, I was back at the painting table.

Fimir – Daemons of Fimul

Fimir – Daemons of Fimul

Last year I pledged to the Assimilation Alien Host kickstarter , which was producing a series of models almost perfect for some of the units I wanted to add to the fimir once the base army is done. Things were pretty quiet once the KS ended, and for a time folks were getting pretty fed up with the lack of updates as the most of the updates appearing were ones apologising for lack of progress. Then, just as the levels of impatience were approaching rage quit, the creator (Ed Fortae of Trollforged) re-appeared with some new sculpts, and things look like they are getting back on track, fingers crossed. Anyhow, the model above from the latest update is based on the concept work that got me to pledge in the first place. It’s a human infected by the mother of all tape worms. For myself, seeing as I’m going with the wormy theme with the fimir, a human possessed by a daemon of Fimul (which are all worms of one type of another) seems pretty plausible. I’m probably going to use these lads as either part of my warped ones (forsaken unit) or perhaps as spawn. They are gloriously disgusting, and I’ll be painting them to make them even more revolting. Now I just need Ed to cast the bloody things.

Fimir – Half Dead Update 12

Fimir – Half Dead Update 12

Another update on the half dead as three more walking corpses join the throng. For some reason I appear unable to take a decent photo today, so these will have to do! The two reaching out are probably the simplest conversions in the unit, but I couldn’t resist that handlebar moustache head on the guy at the back. Only five models left now to complete the unit. Here’s a shot of how the horde of bog mummies looks now, it’s filling out nicely…

Fimir – Half Dead Update 11

Fimir – Half Dead Update 11

Another three members of the unit of half dead shamble off the painting table to join their finished brethren. I’m enjoying trying out various rust techniques, the armoured fellow turned out quite well, methinks. That leaves me with eight more to finish the unit, so… next! Here’s the unit so far, with eight conspicuously empty spaces still crying out for a fillin’.

Warbases – Great Gaming Accessories

Warbases – Great Gaming Accessories

I’ve recently been looking for a company that will make custom acrylic counters for my fimir army to represent the many and various effects that can befall them during a game, as in the heat of battle I can often forget anything and everything up to and including my name and where I am. I had considered Litko , but their custom counters are pretty expensive, though the variety is huge. Conveniently enough, I got a tip off today of a company that does exactly what I wanted, Warbases . They will make counters in a variety of shapes and colours with custom text, and for only €0.35 a counter. Perfecto, that’s me sorted. I was perusing the rest of the site, and it turns out to be a little gaming accessory treasure trove. Laser cut buildings at much cheapness, bases, movement trays, shield sets and a pile of other bits and pieces. Very useful stuff indeed. One upcoming thing did catch my eye, and that was the boats they have coming up soon

Fimir – Late Night Wyrms

Fimir – Late Night Wyrms

It’s a late one here at the mumblings. Having had a fairly marathon day of modelling and painting with me aould pal Craig of Blog of Grudges , we’ve settled into the wee hours with a combination of fimir monstrous cavalry construction and dwarf warrior batch painting, which we’ve helped along with one or two sherries*. I’ve managed to finally put together the first of my marlwyrm riders (skullcrushers). I had a devil of a time deciding what kind of saddle arrangement you could put on a worm, finally settling on a rough hide thrown over it’s back and pretty much nailed in place. I added some assorted extras to the saddle, mostly taken from ogre sprues. There’s so many lovely bits of those sprues, from buckets of guts to a pig water-skin. I had some Celtic-style shields from Scibor one of which finally found a home here too. Only three more to go… The indefatigable Craig has been churning out great weapon-wielding dwarves, all ready for some dip bar a few bits and bobs.
