Patronisation – on sale now at Games Workshop!

Patronisation – on sale now at Games Workshop!

I may have the odd rant about things in this hobby but in general I accept that Games Workshop will always charge as much as they think they can get away with. In fact Jervis Johnson himself once told me this was their strategy. Fair play to them, they’re a business not a charity. If people don’t like it they can vote with their money and simply not shell out for it. However, we all know that we’ll want whatever plastic crack they send our way and they’ll still make a fortune no matter how up in arms we are about it. That being said I remember a time when Games Workshop used to do deals. They used to offer a free miniature with White Dwarf and would issue “collector cards” so that once you bought all of the models on the card you got something free. Granted neither of these were particularly great deals but the idea was there. Oh and don’t get me started on the decline of White Dwarf

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Heavy Support (Part 2)

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Heavy Support (Part 2)

War Walker Squadron If the wave serpent is the stand out unit of the codex then War Walkers are a close second. In the old book they were widely used as a means of bringing a disgusting amount of fire power to a flank near you. In the new book their role is the same but that fire power is much better. Whilst they may struggle from the lack of Fortune they’ve massively benefitted from the guardian BS/WS and initiative boosts. The changes actually make them fairly decent in combat but obviously it’s shooting that they excel at. For the bargain price of 70pts you get two scatter lasers. It gave me a headache when I tried to read the laser-lock rules to figure out whether you can use one to twin-link the other but let’s assume you can’t. Even without you’re still firing 8 shots and over a typical unit of 3 you’re getting 4 more hits than you did with BS3. That’s already something to be excited about if you’ve got a pile of these on your shelf but wait there’s more. Battle Focus applies to war walkers too and somehow they’ve got Fleet too.

Aspirations of Lichdom: Blindly Stumbling Around in Search of a Warcaster

Purchasing models for a new game while you are still learning how to play it can be a frustrating endeavor. I know that fault lies with me and that I should have

The Port of Gierburg – Part 1: A Water Board

The Port of Gierburg – Part 1: A Water Board

For years now I have been collecting and painting high quality resin buildings for some kind of medieval/fantasy gaming board. Now the project is taking shape and I have begun working on The Port of Gierburg. This first part describes how I made a water section usable not only for the port but also for piratey boarding actions. Foreword Water effects are one of the more difficult techniques it seems. I have read a lot about all types of water effects for tabletop/modelling. There’s a lot of talk about different resins, bubbles, stink, bending and breaking, etc. etc. Stu’s reports did not neccessarily motivate me to tackle the issue either, despite the results looking great .

What is spam?

What is spam?

Yeah, it’s that old chestnut again; spam. What is it and why do so many people hate it? Well I can tell you that spam is a processed canned meat and people perhaps do not like it as it’s a ‘fake’ meat and probably filled with salt and other nasty stuff. Haha I joke! What is spam? So spam then what is it? Well spam is when someone fills the board with multiple units and generally there's just too many targets to take out. As you have probably guessed I do not have a problem with

Blog Wars 5 Update – Maunsfeld Gaming has Closed!

Blog Wars 5 Update – Maunsfeld Gaming has Closed!

You may have already seen this but Maunsfeld Gaming (the shop formerly known as Maelstrom Games and the venue of the first four Blog Wars) has now gone into receivership. I received an email from the venue this lunchtime to say: Hi there I’m sorry to have to say this, but Maunsfeld Gaming is now closed for the foreseeable future. Maunsfeld Gaming is going into liquidation shortly; the company is not insolvent – there’s enough assets to cover any debts – but the longer it carries on, the more debts will accumulate and it will achieve critical mass at some point. With the attendance falling, organisers cancelling events, terrain being stolen, staff leaving, not being able to stock Games Workshop products in the store and the quite breathtaking and totally unjustified vitriol on the internet from some quarters, it seems the venue is no longer wanted by most. I know this is a major disappointment for those of you that have a booked in event at the mill or attend on club nights, but I have no alternative but to call an end to it…………… ………….I hope you all understand why this has happened and that it’s not what I or our staff wanted. I wanted to sell the company, perhaps even the assets alone, so that someone can keep it going, but nobody seems to want to take it on, so that’s that. May I take this opportunity to thank all of you that have held events at the mill, or attended the club nights, over the past few years; you have been superb and I hope you have all enjoyed the facilities we put so much effort and time (and money) in to provide.

X vs Y: Flesh Hounds vs Seekers

X vs Y: Flesh Hounds vs Seekers

In the Chaos Daemons codex there are two units which really give me a boner; Flesh Hounds and Seekers. Ok I lie about the Seekers, I do not think they are that interesting. I think they are ok so don’t get me wrong, just I see the internet saying how awesome they are and not a lot of people seem to give the Flesh Hounds a second thought. I think it is time for a deep look, return of the X vs Y! Flesh Hounds The humble Flesh Hound costs the same points as a normal Tactical Marine, you get a profile almost the same except WS5, W2, A2, LD7 and a might 6+ save. The Flesh Hound is also unit type beasts and beasts are pretty damn awesome in 6th ed. Naturally the Flesh Hounds have the daemon special rule so they get a 5+ invulnerable save and also have the fear special rule – also has the daemonic instability rule which means auto pass pinning, morale and fear tests, and if the Daemons lose combat the unit suffers one wound (no saves allowed) for every point failed leadership by. Do not forget roll a double 1 and all models return but roll a double 6 and the shit will really hit the fan. Flesh Hound is a Daemon of Khorne and has the furious charge rule and has hatred (Daemons of Slaanesh). Flesh Hounds also have the scout special rule 🙂 Only wargear Flesh Hounds get is the Collar of Khorne which gives
