Games Workshop Claims Rights to the Term ‘Space Marine’

…world slaps forehead. Some of you might have heard this already, but here’s a link to an article sticking up for a science fiction writer who has had her book removed from Amazon in response to a request from Games Workshop.

My Proposed Dark Angels List for Blog Wars 5

My Proposed Dark Angels List for Blog Wars 5

I’ve not had a great deal of opportunity to test out my Dark Angels but a combination of the couple of games I’ve had and general reading round on the internet has led me to think that I’m right in my wariness about fielding Deathwing. Don’t get me wrong I love terminators but every time I try to write a list with some I picture myself rolling a pile of 1s! I may find a way of getting them into a list but at the moment I think I’m just too excited about the idea of tons of bikes zipping around. Here’s my current effort: 1,847pts of Dark Angels Sammael Librarian on bike (Mastery 2) RW command squad (apothecary, champion, Standard of Devastation w/ grenade launcher) 5 Deathwing Knights 10-man Tactical Squad w/ plasma cannon, plasma gun & vet sergeant w/ chainsword 3x 6 RW bikes w/ plasma, melta, chainsword (for modelling purposes) 6 RW Black Knights w/ 2 grenade launchers Darkshroud I’ve dropped the flyer from my previous list because it’s well established to be more than a little shitty. I’ve ditched the 4-man RW bikes and the attack bikes too. The attack bikes are an easy First Blood for my opponents and aren’t much of a threat except for a flukey vehicle kill. The most obvious difference is that it’s no longer pure ravenwing. The tiny bit of “green” comes in the form of the tacticals. The tacticals just boost the number of bolters I’ve got for the banner and hopefully we be ignored because of all the bikes zipping around.

First Reaction to the New Dark Angels Models

First Reaction to the New Dark Angels Models

As you might’ve read I’m going to be starting a new army with the Dark Angels codex so I thought I’d take a look at the new models. Obviously this is only based on the pictures as I won’t physically have the models until next week (I’ll post again when I do) but for now here’s my first thoughts. The Codex I’m a huge fan of the quality of the new codexes/codices. It’s taken GW far too long to produce full colour books which compliment the standard of their miniatures. Now I’m not saying I’m a fan of the price tag being 50% higher but given the massive leap in the finish of the final product I can kind of forgive them… kind of. What I can’t get my head around is why anyone would then pay another £25 (ignoring the discount you could get on the standard edition from an FLGS) for the limited edition version. Seriously, although the embossed chapter symbols look good, you’re playing £25 for a new cover and a printout of some words that you’d swear had been done on someone’s PC. The content is exactly the same and if I see someone at a tournament with the limited version I’d be more likely to laugh at them than say “that looks cool”.

Blog Wars 4 Painting Competition (pic heavy)

Blog Wars 4 Painting Competition (pic heavy)

Sorry for the delay in getting these up but I’ve finally managed to get the internet installed in my new house so I should be back to regular posting. There’s already a lot of things I need to post about that I haven’t been able to but I thought I’d finish off the Blog Wars 4 stuff first. Let’s with a look at some of the entries from the competition. First off here’s the tournament winner, Andy Humphris’ ( Sons of Sanguinius ), Necrons. I have to say I’m a fan of the fading purple look and this army makes me determined to try airbrushing at some point. If for no other reason than how quick it seems to be!! Here’s Nathaniel Gibbs’ Grey Knights. There are some excellent conversions in here and in particular the dreadnoughts with wrist-mounted autocannons. Nathaniel was a close runner up in both the Best Painted Army and Best Painted Special Character votes. Andy Gosling ( Iron Legion ) has been working on his “one force” marines.

Army Sharing: the Way of the Future?

Army Sharing: the Way of the Future?

This somewhat sensational title refers to something I’ve been thinking about lately.

Tactica: Death Guard Troops

Tactica: Death Guard Troops

In my previous posts in this series, I looked at HQ’s (pt 1, pt 2, pt 3), and elites that fit into a Death Guard army. Next up, we have the troops slot. There are two main troops options, then there are the Plague Marines, unlocked by a Lord with mark of nurgle. Any Death Guard warband should be primarily Plague Marines, but as all the old legions still recruit, it is entirely possible that your list would contain some or even many units of CSM with mark of nurgle. Fluff wise, this can be justified as recent converts who’s bodies haven’t sucumbed to disease yet, but who are marked by Nurgle. I think it is even plausible that a single unit of Plague Marines would deploy with a group of Death Guard neophytes, leading them into battle, sacrificing them on the guns of their enemies, etc. Those who survive are one step closer to becoming true Death Guard. There is more of a complication with using cultists in your death guard army. There is definitely precedent (Siege of Vraks, yo) for human devotees to Nurgle fighting with Death Guard warbands, but as a permanent part of your army, the fluff is complicated.

Liebster Blog Awards – better late than never I suppose…

Frontline Gamer has very kindly nominated me for a Liebster Award, which appears to be a feel-good pass-it-on chain thingy for blogs which I am supposed to continue by nominating five blogs I particularly enjoy.

More Blog Wars 4 Updates

More Blog Wars 4 Updates

Thought I’d answer a couple of questions that have arisen this week. Before I do let me remind you that tickets will still be available until midnight next Saturday. This is also the deadline for army list submission. Maelstrom Games Collapse As you may be reading across the internet, Maelstrom Games has gone under. I wanted to get a post up pretty quickly to prevent any concerns that Blog Wars 4 won’t be going ahead. It is my understanding that whilst the retail arm of the business is going into liquidation, the Eye of the Storm venue is still trading normally. I want to reassure everyone coming to BW4 that their money is safe. If I’m forced to cancel the event because it turns out the venue is closing then everyone will get their ticket price back. Therefore if you’re having doubts about coming along because of the Maelstrom drama then rest assured that you won’t be taking a risk in buying a ticket! One final point on this. I’ve yet to clarify whether the venue still has a store attached to it.

Discussion: flyers are bad ass?

Discussion: flyers are bad ass?

Flyers then, they as bad ass as people make out? I am starting to get more game time in using and against flyers. Up until recently I had only had limited game time against flyers and that was against Vendettas. I’ve been getting more games in against Stormravens, which isn’t exactly loads more flyers, but I’ve played the same list twice and learning more and more each game, which is great :). Good for using flyers There’s a shining points of why flyers are good; fast moving, fire multiple weapons and hard to hit. Moving up to 36″ is great, especially when you’re playing hammer and anvil and need to get across that table or get those guns into range. Laying waste to the enemy with multiple weapons is very cool. The opponent needing 6+ to hit brings a smile to your face and a look of frustration on your opponent’s face. Those are the good things I can think for flyers.

Blog Wars 4 Ticket and Army List Deadline

Blog Wars 4 Ticket and Army List Deadline

Firstly, let me apologise for my recent lack of blog posts. We’ve recently moved house and our internet connection won’t be activated until bloody December!! Therefore I’m currently borrowing my mobile’s internet connection to post but as you can imagine it isn’t ideal! Anyway, all that aside I wanted to throw up some updates about Blog Wars 4. Maelstrom Drama Let’s get this out of the way before I talk about the fun stuff. As you may have read on various sites across the internet Maelstrom is apparently having some financial difficulties. Obviously as this is the venue for Blog Wars I’ve been paying attention to this. However, as far as I’m aware the venue, Eye of the Storm, will not be affected by the apparent problems. From what I’ve heard they split the venue which was profitable from the store which was struggling in the wake of GW’s change to shipping policy (i.e. can’t seen to the US/Australia any more).
