Battle Report: Eldar vs Blood Angels – 2,000 points

Battle Report: Eldar vs Blood Angels – 2,000 points

I decided to give Eldar a whirl yesterday against Rich and his Blood Angels. I’ve got a list in mind which I am interested to see if works before I start shelling the cash. I used to play Eldar back in 5th, and now I’ve made up my mind that fast and shooty is my play style I think I’ll enjoy them more than ever 🙂 No pics I am afriad as proxy mayhem while both of us are testing lists; sorry, amigos. Eldar – 2,000 points HQ Farseer – eldar jetbike & mantle of the laughing god Spiritseer Troops 5 x Wraithguard w/ Wave Serpent – Serpent w/ twin-linked scatter lasers & holofield 5 x Wraithguard w/ Wave Serpent – Serpent w/ twin-linked scatter lasers & holofield 5 x Dire Avengers w/ Wave Serpent – Serpent w/ twin-linked scatter lasers & holofield 5 x Dire Avengers w/ Wave Serpent – Serpent w/ twin-linked scatter lasers & holofield 5 x Dire Avengers w/ Wave Serpent – Serpent w/ twin-linked scatter lasers & holofield 3 x Windrider Jetbikes Fast Attack Vyper – shuriken cannon Vyper – shuriken cannon Heavy Support 2 x War Walkers – 4 x scatter lasers 2 x War Walkers – 4 x scatter lasers 2 x War Walkers – 4 x brightlances Blood Angels – 2,000 points HQ Gabriel Seth Reclusiarch – jump pack Elite 2 x Sanguinary Priests – jump packs 7 x Sternguard Veterans w/ Rhino Troops 5 x Assault Marines w/ Razorback – meltagun 5 x Assault Marines w/ Razorback – meltagun 5 x Assault Marines w/ Razorback – flamer 10 x Assault Marines – 2 x meltaguns – sgt w/ lightning claw 10 x Assault Marines – 2 x meltaguns – sgt w/ lightning claw Heavy Support 5 x Devastators – 4 x missile launchers 5 x Devastators – 4 x missile launchers Fortifications Aegis Defence Line – quad gun Aegis Defence Line – quad gun Game: we’re playing a custom mission which I wrote which is centre about a volcanic planet. The mission has special rules which units in terrain roll a D6 and result of a 1 that model takes an initiative test, if fails then dies. Also at the start of the turn roll a D6 for every unit, if a 6+ is rolled then that unit is hit by D6 S8 AP3 volanic debris. Deployment was short edged tables 12″ from the edge and mission was whoever holds the most table quarters. Deployment I won the roll off and took the short edge to my right. Rich dropped his ADLs spread across his deployment zone. I deployed first placing Lance Walkers on the left flank (on my long table edge), then in the centre behind a ruin all other units while the two Vypers took refuge behind a ruin on the right flank

Blog Wars 5

Blog Wars 5

I’m going to Blog Wars 5 this year. I’ve tried to get to Blog Wars for a number of years always with something coming up at the last minute to stop me going. This year I’m determined to make it happen! That’s a good thing too as Alex, the current champion has pulled out, the venue has closed down and I only have a few weeks to go and I haven’t painted a single miniature! More than half of my army is in the shrink wrap… I’ll be bringing my Tau, which is a little awkward as I recently sold nearly all of my Tau miniatures, including the limited edition Ethereal I got with the army set in 2001. 2001! Hence the rapid re-purchase of some of my favourite miniatures and my first foray into Army Painter’s products. GDMNW.com has been very, very quiet and I think a mini-series based around my preparation for, and experiences around Blog Wars 5 is a nice way of getting back into the blogging routine. Like many other people I think the new Tau Empire book is very good, not least because it is going to take some time for the meta to stop shifting and for people to find the new Tau groove. Removing the easy access to S10 at range was a masterstroke, it’s a move that’s opened options up across the force organisation chart. Suddenly Piranhas, Stealth Teams, Riptides and Crisis Suits with Fusion Blasters are a whole lot more interesting. None of them have the old twin-linked, 72″ range awesome of the last ‘dex but they do now each have their place, where before if you could afford nine Broadsides there weren’t a whole lot of reasons not to… It may well turn out to be otherwise but this really does feel like a powerful codex with a series of useful and well priced units that different players will be able to use to express their own style and taste while remaining competitive. I’ve seen quite a few gimmicky lists being thrown around already, from tri-riptide to 120 Kroot.

5/2/13: Back at it! Painting: Grots, Goblins, and Gremlins

5/2/13: Back at it! Painting: Grots, Goblins, and Gremlins

Hey guys! This is probably the worst gap in posts I’ve ever had! Not good! I’ve been super busy the last two weeks though, and now that I’m past everything, its nice to be finished. Lets recap, shall we? Over the last two weeks, I’ve: Completed my senior year of college Graduated college with a Bachelors of Art in Art Moved apartments in town and set up my studio again Got everything ready to go to Egypt in May I haven’t really posted about it yet, but Smells Like Wargaming will be on hiatus from May 13th to May 31st, as I will be in Egypt, studying the Arab Spring and visiting many of the ancient sites as a graduation present from my parents. Most of my clients have already been informed, and any new emails will be handled when I return. Going back though, it’s a great feeling to finally be graduated from college. I’ve got a lot more free-time now, which means more time for Smells Like Wargaming and more hours at the shop, which, in turn, allows me to pursue more vigorous and challenging projects. I’ve already got plans to finish my Chaos Space Marines for Tacticon in September, and I’ve got two other armies sitting on my shelf that need to get painted. Speaking of painted armies, I picked up a box of Gretchin with some Graduation money I received, as it looks like I’m now painting that Ork army I’ve had sitting around for a bit. Love the grots, they’re easily my favorite unit in the Ork codex! I’ve always been a fan of goblins in fantasy and sci-fi settings. My primary Magic deck is Goblins, grots are just hilarious, and anything goblin-related is just cool to me

Dominus Armored Siege Bombard

Dominus Armored Siege Bombard

A guest blog by SoCal’s greatest converter of 40K models. From Greg Teeuwen: In several IA books, this particular tank is mentioned, but there are no images of it. I'm a big arty/template player, and I love blowing stuff up, so this particular tank appealed to me.

Tau Empire: Army Composition

Tau Empire: Army Composition

Games Workshop We were thinking, the day after the advance order notification for the Tau Empire went up, about the composition of the new Tau Empire codex. Fortunately the boys and girls over at Games Workshop have been kind enough to let us know which units fall in which parts of the army. This means we can look at which units compete with each other. Historically the Elite and Heavy Support choices in the Tau Empire codex were overloaded with good options. It looks like things aren’t going to change much! HQ: Ethereals Characters Commander XV8s Cadre Fireblades Bodyguard XV8s We’re fingers crossed that the Fireblade will be available as an HQ choice and that the 1+ restriction on XV8 commanders will have been lifted. Whether or not this happens is another thing entirely. The HQ slots seems relatively clear and the complete absence of Psykers no doubt made it much easier to keep this section slim. In White Dwarf Jeremy, the author of the new codex, points out that the Tau have a lot of kit. So fingers cross there’ll be some new toys to customise our models with. It’s also worth noting that Blacksun filters and Multitrackers come as standard in the new codex on the four XV suit variants

Independent Character Hobby Challenge: April Commitment

Independent Character Hobby Challenge: April Commitment

It is that time again, time to make my monthly hobby commitment for the Independent Character Hobby Challenge . However, before I do so, I must first say that I have made my commitments for the first three months of the challenge. This is something I am quite proud of considering the fact that I made two commitments during the entirety of their last challenge and didn't complete a single one of them. Read more »

Battle Report: Necrons vs Minotaurs – 2,000 points

Battle Report: Necrons vs Minotaurs – 2,000 points

I played a game against Jon last night. He is rocking the Minotaurs chapter which is a F.W chapter from an Imperial Armour book. I am expecting a good fight as he is bringing triple Vindies, and I do not like one Vindie let alone three! Necrons ‘Mechrons’ – 2,000 points HQ Necron Overlord w/ Catacomb Command Barge – warscythe & mindshackle scarabs Royal Court – 3 x Crypteks – 3 x harbingers of destruction & solar pulse Necron Overlord w/ Catacomb Command Barge – warscythe & mindshackle scarabs Royal Court – 3 x Crypteks – 3 x harbingers of destruction & solar pulse Troops 5 x Necron Warriors w/ Ghost Ark 5 x Necron Warriors w/ Ghost Ark 5 x Necron Warriors w/ Ghost Ark 5 x Necron Warriors Fast Attack 6 x Wraiths – 3 x whip coils 6 x Wraiths – 3 x whip coils Heavy Support Annihilation Barge Annihilation Barge Annihilation Barge Minotaurs – 2,000 points HQ Asteron Moloc Reclusiarch Ivanus Enkomi Captain – artificer armour & power fist Troops 10 x Tactical Marines w/ Razorback – flamer & missile launcher 5 x Tactical Marines w/ Razorback 10 x Tactical Marines – plasma gun & shields 10 x Tactical Marines – shields Heavy Support Vindicator Vindicator Vindicator Land Raider Achilles 5 x Devastators – 4 x missile launchers Game: Dawn of War & Purge the Alien – night fighting is on Deployment Jon wins the roll off and lets me go first, this is a good idea as Necrons as a mid range army and I won’t get so many shots off on him the first turn. It will allow him to drop demolisher shells on me from a distance. I deploy all on the right flank with my Wraiths at the front, Ghost Arks in the middle and then all Barges behind with Overlords on each flank. Jon deploys spread out across his table edge, going from left to right – Land Raider, missile launcher combat squad, Vindicator, Devs w/ Reclusiarch, shield Marines w/ Moloc, Vindicator, Marines in a ruin, Vindicator and then the two Razors. * Tactical Notes It looks like Jon fears my gauss more than I fear his Land Raider as he has deployed it a long way from me. I’ll keep it at an arms distance for now, but I am tempted to send the none warlord Overlord towards that way and cut it up with his warscythe, if the Overlord survives he can attack the 5 man units camping on the hill in ruins along side a Vindie.
