Well it may only be June but, as I mentioned the other day, I’ve met one of my New Year targets by having more than 200 followers. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to read this blog. It’s especially impressive when you consider how wordy my posts normally are! Anyway, realising I’d hit that target half way through the year got me thinking about how my other resolutions were coming along. Attend More Tournaments Well so far I’m not doing all too well on this front. We may have been to the GW Doubles in January (and won it) but the only other tournament I’ve played in this year was Blog Wars 5. Obviously there’ll be Blog Wars 6 and the Doubles again in September but it’d be good to get to a few more tournaments in the next six months. I’ve been looking in various places across the interweb and I’ve struggled to find events that really appeal to me. Matt and I will, however, be attending a small doubles event at the Outpost in Sheffield on July 13th. There are still plenty of places left if anyone is interested by the way

Geez, almost two weeks…. Hey guys! Sorry for the lack of posts this time around, my boss was out of town last week, meaning I was running the store all week. I love my job, but that much time in a hobby shop means blogging was the last thing on my mind! This, however, doesn’t mean I didn’t get any painting done! Lets jump in, shall we? First up is everyone's favorite Catdog, Canis Wolfborn! This is the 3rd or 4th Canis I've painted, but I really wanted to go all out on this one. Sorry the pictures aren't better, I'll get really good ones when I'm taking final pictures of the commission.

I may have the odd rant about things in this hobby but in general I accept that Games Workshop will always charge as much as they think they can get away with. In fact Jervis Johnson himself once told me this was their strategy. Fair play to them, they’re a business not a charity. If people don’t like it they can vote with their money and simply not shell out for it. However, we all know that we’ll want whatever plastic crack they send our way and they’ll still make a fortune no matter how up in arms we are about it. That being said I remember a time when Games Workshop used to do deals. They used to offer a free miniature with White Dwarf and would issue “collector cards” so that once you bought all of the models on the card you got something free. Granted neither of these were particularly great deals but the idea was there. Oh and don’t get me started on the decline of White Dwarf

Not written an army list for a bit (though have been working on Eldar lists), thought I would have a crack at Chaos Daemons as a few dudes as my local club have started Chaos Daemons and they have spurred me on. Chaos Daemons ‘Kinky Fire Dogs’ – 2,000 points HQ Keeper of Secrets – mastery level 3 & 2 x greater rewards Keeper of Secrets – mastery level 3 & 2 x greater rewards Troops 10 x Pink Horrors 10 x Pink Horrors 10 x Pink Horrors 10 x Pink Horrors Fast Attack 11 x Flesh Hounds 11 x Flesh Hounds Heavy Support Daemon Prince – daemon of slaanesh, warp forged armour, daemonic flight & 2 x greater rewards Daemon Prince – daemon of slaanesh, warp forged armour, daemonic flight & 2 x greater rewards Daemon Prince – daemon of slaanesh, warp forged armour, daemonic flight & 2 x greater rewards Total: 1,997 Sorry about the silly ass list name, couldn’t think of anything good. Yeah, I know, I suck at finding cool names. I do not like horde armies and prefer fast moving shooty armies which are either elite i.e Ravenwing, mech such as Dark Eldar or big ass monsters. Tyranids can knock out many o big monster, but I am not interested in them and found a liking for Chaos Daemons a year ago. Now I know KoS (Keeper of Secrets) aren’t awesome, but with some good luck (luck isn’t a valid tactic, but it is what Chaos Daemons codex goes on as everything is random) the Keepers should get invisibility power (gives stealth and shrouding) on the telepathy psychic power table. Hopefully some good greater rewards will do too such as 4+ feel no pain and 3+ armour save, the extra wound gift will be handy too. The Horrors are there just to camp on objectives and lay down some covering fire.

I got a call yesterday afternoon from the local plastic crack dealer that the new Eldar releases had arrived so I swung though and picked up the codex and the sassy new Wraithknight. Since I’ve been working on the Imperial Knights recently I was quite interested to see how the new model compared, and I was not disappointed! What was slightly surprising was how static the model was designed to be out of the box – I was expecting to be able to pose the legs and torso however I pleased, but the way the upper legs were designed to attach to the pelvis and the way the knees pegged in place it seems as though it was designed such that it’s meant to go together in a very specific way. We can’t have that now, can we? A fair bit of cutting and filing ensued to remove a number of pegs and tabs that force the particular pose that it’s designed with and I was finally able to get a good running pose out of it. To be fair, there’s nothing wrong with the original pose out of the box, and I suppose it was designed such that the novice modeler would be able to get a nice solid build out of it without having too much trouble. A bit of time with the clippers will be required if you wish to have the lower legs in any pose beyond the default though. I altered how both upper thighs attach to the pelvis, straightened the left leg and increased the bend on the right to really get it looking like it’s charging forward.

Was hoping to get a run at the new High Elves at my local club this week but that is not going to happen now. Even if the new book turns up at work tomorrow I won't have anytime to digest its contents.

Hi,

Hey guys, So its been almost a week since I put paint to model, but my final semester of school is almost finished. I’ve got a couple of projects to turn in, a single final, and I’m graduating this saturday. I’ve gotta say, its super surreal to think that in less than a week, I’ll no longer be a student and be a full-time manager and artist. School, for me, has been a safeguard, a place for me to build Smells Like Wargaming, as well as many long-term connections to the Wargaming community and clients both national and international. The real question is, however, is what does the future hold for Smells Like Wargaming? As an artist, I’ve found my niche and, if I so choose, I can always expand into other directions. For those of you who don’t know, along with Smells Like Wargaming, I’m also manager at our FLGS, Durango Game Space. Anyone in the area should come and say hey! Anyways, having ties and connections via the shop helps secure me in the local wargaming scene, but various other games as well. Casual Magic: The Gathering, anyone? But through my job, I continue to work and expand the hobby through most aspects of my life.
