How To Deal with Flyers in 6th Edition 40K – Part 1

How To Deal with Flyers in 6th Edition 40K – Part 1

I’m sure if you asked most people what the biggest change in 6th edition is they’d say “flyers”. I’m not sure I agree with that, but it seems to be a hot topic all the same. Whenever you write a list at the back of your mind you’re always thinking “how am I going to deal with flyers?”. Even if you aren’t, you can guarantee if you post a list up on a blog or forum people will quickly ask the question. With the new DA codex it’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot. So what’s the best way to deal with them then? This part of the article will talk about the current flyers in the game with an attempt to categorise them and then parts 2 and 3 will be about methods of dealing with them. (I’m not going to talk about flying MCs here because they’re a very different prospect. Similarly I’m not going to mention Forge World units as it’s a whole other can of worms!) Currently Available Flyers Let’s begin by looking at the current cohort of planes that 40K generals have access to: Blood Angels/Grey Knights – Stormraven (AV12) – lots of firepower, strong armour (with ceramite plating), large transport capacity, hover mode. Pretty much the daddy of flyers, especially the BA version

Dark Angels codex – what the?

Dark Angels codex – what the?

I’ve finally managed to get my mits on the Dark Angel codex and I have got to say I am shocked at some of the crazy stuff going on. Ok, I know I am one to talk as I use some codices which have a few eyebrow raising rules, but the D.A stuff looks pretty over powered. I guess I am perhaps even more disappointed because I had hoped that the D.A codex would be on the same power level as the CSM codex, unfortunately I am so wrong. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice an aging codex is given an update (though a lot more need it before D.A i.e Eldar and Tau), but shouldn’t all codices be at the same power level or at least be as powerful as the previous codex? Here’s some of the things I am talking about: Dark Angel units get the grim resolve (stubborn special rule and cannot auto fail morale checks) special rule and inner circle (fearless and preferred enemy: CSM) special rules. This is in addition to ATSKF and combat tactics. I will point out and say not all models get both these new rules. Land Raiders can have the deathwing vehicle rule which gives preferred enemy: CSM and gives them venerable, so yeah, re-roll the damage results on an av14 vehicle can you..

Space Wolves in 6th Edition

Space Wolves in 6th Edition

Firstly, as you may have noticed, the blog has a slightly different look to before. Most obvious is the new banner which I’ve been meaning to change for a while. It’s certainly still a bit amateurish but I’m fairly happy with it and it least it points out that this blog isn’t purely about Space Wolves anymore. The blog is also a bit wider to incorporate a second side bar. Anyway, despite literally just saying that this isn’t a purely SW blog anymore I want to talk about them today. In the comments section for my battle against Jamie, Sentinel asked for my thoughts on the state of the Space Wolves army in 6th edition so that’s what I’ll talk about here. Before I do though I’d like to mention that Sentinel has his own blog here (it’s also in the Recommend Reading on the right) and also give a bit of a shout to Dominic and his Dark Angels blog (which will be my New Year New Army project – more to come). State of Play at the End of 5th Edition After a period of being one of the strongest books out there the Space Wolves started to see a bit of a decline in popularity towards the end of 5th edition.

Death Guard Fast Attack

Death Guard Fast Attack

Next up in our review of the Death Guard, we have the Fast Attack section. This is an odd one for the average death guard player, the death guard did not specialize between assault and tactical marines, instead carrying a ccw as well as a bolt pistol and bolter. Jump packs and bikes were uncommon, but there were some in use at the time of the destroyer plague. While the idea of T6 bikes is tempting, it doesn’t really mesh with the original legion, so if I ever include them I paint them in my Red Corsairs scheme. Mark of Nurgle is honestly too expensive to take on raptors, the same goes for warptalons. So that leaves us with: Heldrake The Heldrake is an impressive choice in this book, and taking two of them is considered mandatory in a lot of people’s minds when it comes to the CSM book. Here’s the thing though, they are expensive, and you do have to justify their presence in a fluffy list. This is achievable, because though the Death Guard prefered footslogged tactics, they would never cede an air advantage to their enemies. Mortarion’s combat doctrine is nothing if not responsive to conditions

Adapting to 6th: Orks

Adapting to 6th: Orks

Orks were a funny one in 5th, they are like marmite, you either like them or you don’t. I’ve always had a love for the greenskins. I think that a lot of 40k players like them, they are a cool but brutal army. I think the more serious competitive tournament players probably do not like them due to their random nature, which I admit is annoying, but this can be avoided. All of the Ork special rules got effected by 6th ed and I think for the better. Waaaagh gives Orks the fleet rule and in 6th fleet allows you to re-roll assault distances, very nice. Furious charge lost the initiative bonus, but lets be truth that doesn't bother

Adapting for 6th ed: Blood Angels in 6th

Adapting for 6th ed: Blood Angels in 6th

I’ve decided to kick start a series of articles for adapting armies to 6th ed. Not only will this help people adapt their current armies to 6th, but it will also help me too get used to 6th ed style lists. I’ll do a article for each army, well at least the ones I have a fair amount of knowledge, so sorry, no Tau etc. The poor Blood Angels, they got hit extremely hard by the nerf bat. In fact they got hit as hard as a step child ginger kid.
