Eldar – Guardian Defenders painted

Eldar – Guardian Defenders painted

Spent enough time painting tanks and other big things recently, so it was time to spend some time on the infantry! I have to admit, I’m getting tired of painting blue and yellow so it’s about time to move on to something new but before that happens the unit of Guardian Defenders got a lashing of paint! Pretty straightforward – I went with the same blue recipe used on the vehicles, but rather than sponging the various blues, I went with a mix of drybrushing and stippling with an old brush. The blue wash then tied it all together and muted it a bit. I knew I didn’t want to go crazy with the yellow, so just the helmets and a couple bits of cloth got the hot orange/golden yellow treatment. Once that was done, the weapons got the bone color, and then I went in and painted the umpteen zillion little tiny gems. Probably could have gotten away without that step, but since there’s just going to be the one unit of guardians they deserved a little extra work. Overall, a right serviceable unit who will likely hang back and sit on an objective (and get carved into ribbons by whatever looks at them funny). Next up? Who knows?

How many flyers?

How many flyers?

Flyers in 40k are like marmite; you either love them or hate them. Either way you’ve got to put up with them as they are part of the core rules, but not only that they also have some very good rules i.e only snap fire can hit them unless got skyfire – there’s no escape from them! 40k has seen lists like Cronair (9 flyers) or Vendetta squadrons (9 also) but really what is the right amount of flyers to have in your list? As mentioned above flyers have some good rules, but they also come with some negatives and that is they must move at least 18″ and can only pivot 90 degrees before moving. This makes flyers have limited manoeuvrability, though does give them speed. This means you have to think where you are placing your flyer as you need to get the right angle of shots in plus you could leave weak parts of your flyer exposed i.e rear armour. Going back to Cronair style lists, I believe these lists do not have the best number of flyers. Sure they are hard to tackle because you need 6+ to hit them (unless you have skyfire), so the greatest strength for a flyer is it’s greatest defence. However, with so many flyers moving about on the table and keeping in mind the above, having that many flyers is going to cause issues. Factor in that flyers base is about 6″ x 3″ – that’s the foot print the size of a Rhino and you still have to be 1″ away from enemy units. Another weak point of having so many flyers is you do not get to use a lot of points on other parts of your army.

Army Lists: Dark Angels ‘Deathwing’ – 2,000 points

Army Lists: Dark Angels ‘Deathwing’ – 2,000 points

I got a message from Tom who also goes to Vine Inn Gaming, he was asking for some feedback on his Deathwing list. The original list has a Land Raider in along with some Deathknights, can’t remember what else. I wrote this for him, keep in mind I am not a Deathwing player and play Ravenwing. Dark Angels ‘Deathwing’ – 2,000 points HQ Belial – thunder hammer & storm shield Librarian – mastery level 2 & terminator armour Deathwing Command Squad – apothecary & 5 x thunder hammers & storm shields Elite Mortis Dreadnought – 2 x twin-linked autocannons Mortis Dreadnought – 2 x twin-linked autocannons Troops 5 x Deathwing Terminators – 4 x thunder hammers & storm shields, chain fist & cyclone missile launcher 5 x Deathwing Terminators – 4 x thunder hammers & storm shields, chain fist & cyclone missile launcher 5 x Deathwing Terminators – 4 x thunder hammers & storm shields, chain fist & cyclone missile launcher 5 x Scouts – sniper rifles Heavy Support Predator – lascannon sponsons Predator – lascannon sponsons Fortification Aegis Defence Line Total: 1,995 In Tom’s previous list he had a Land Raider Crusader – this is handy for mostly anti infantry, though in past experience playing against Tom he has never had enough long ranged punch. I was thinking of switching the Crusader for Godhammer, but two Predators are still cheaper and contribute more lascannon death. Plus a Land Raider sucks up more points in a list heavy with heavy point suckers. Deathwing Knights, I dropped these because Tom is paying points for the Crusader to transport them and then Belial only makes Deathwing troops – so paying to make Terminators troops and not having one unit scoring. I replaced these with a DWCS (Deathwing Command Squad), which act as the hammer unit.

Hobby: in pursuit of perfection

Hobby: in pursuit of perfection

I’ve always like the Emperor’s Children; it’s their funky colour scheme of purple and gold along with a spot of black, green and silver which attracts me. I also view them as the ‘true’ Chaos Space Marines – weird looking fellows with some weird ass mutations. As much as I like my Iron Warriors, I sometimes feel they are not true chaos and just mardy upset geezers who have got their hands in their arse after they couldn’t build daddy’s castle. In 5th ed I played CSM and had Iron Warriors for my CSM army. I have re-done half the army in Iron Warriors style, but I feel the models look dull and un-attractive, plus the highlights I have done look weird offset against their dull appearance. I decided to bite the bullet and during my day off (yesterday) I went in pursuit of perfection (which I still have a long away to go) and painted up some Emperor’s Children CSM and starting getting my form Blood Angel Razorbacks into shape. I am not a fan of the current E.C pink, it’s not my style and while I like the dark purple it did turn out too dark in test models. I went for genestealer purple and thrown in some white to make it a little brighter. A wash later and another coat of purple and then some emperor’s children highlights and I am pretty happy. The Rhinos have got some way to come yet and will look better when there is paint on them

Dark Angels codex – what the?

Dark Angels codex – what the?

I’ve finally managed to get my mits on the Dark Angel codex and I have got to say I am shocked at some of the crazy stuff going on. Ok, I know I am one to talk as I use some codices which have a few eyebrow raising rules, but the D.A stuff looks pretty over powered. I guess I am perhaps even more disappointed because I had hoped that the D.A codex would be on the same power level as the CSM codex, unfortunately I am so wrong. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice an aging codex is given an update (though a lot more need it before D.A i.e Eldar and Tau), but shouldn’t all codices be at the same power level or at least be as powerful as the previous codex? Here’s some of the things I am talking about: Dark Angel units get the grim resolve (stubborn special rule and cannot auto fail morale checks) special rule and inner circle (fearless and preferred enemy: CSM) special rules. This is in addition to ATSKF and combat tactics. I will point out and say not all models get both these new rules. Land Raiders can have the deathwing vehicle rule which gives preferred enemy: CSM and gives them venerable, so yeah, re-roll the damage results on an av14 vehicle can you..

New FAQs from GW including Dark Angels

New FAQs from GW including Dark Angels

As they did with the Chaos Space Marines codex, GW have been pretty quick in releasing an FAQ. Whilst this is a good thing, in the sense that at least people won’t be stuck with units they aren’t sure how to use, it frustrates me that they can’t proof read a book properly when I’m spending £30 on it. Anyway, here’s a summary of what’s in there. Dark Angels FAQ 1.0 Techmarines gain a boltgun to their wargear – won’t affect much really The plasma talon has been clarified as Rapid Fire which it was in the summary – stops the confusion Belial and Azrael’s wargear now match in both sections of the book Relic banners thing is sorted in the ravenwing command squad – we all knew what it meant but nice that they made sure Deathwing champions are one per army – not a big deal Veterans can now all exchange their boltguns for other stuff – will make the unit pricey but at least you aren’t restricted Black Knight Huntmaster can now use the cool looking power maul on the sprue – although I’m not sure you’d bother. Darkshroud doesn’t have stealth but still has shrouded – again most rational people realised this was a typo but here ends the debate. Wierdly, if you particularly wanted to you can now field Interrogator-Chaplain Seraphicus as a special character who loses Zealot in place of Litanies of the Dark Angels. Why exactly would you do that?? Finally, disappointingly, the only thing that gets changed on the flyers is the Missile Lock. I think we all knew that’s all they’d do but a little bit of me died when I read it! Nothing earthshattering here but good that they cleared up stuff that should never have made it into print. This is all well and good as long as you remember to check both the codex and FAQ whenever you’re unsure about wargear.

Imperial Guard – Leman Russ Executioner Painted

Imperial Guard – Leman Russ Executioner Painted

Got a lot of hobby stuff done over this past weekend, with the the build-out of a whole mess of Dark Angels goodies making up the Lion’s share (hah!) of the effort. However, before I jump onto the DA bandwagon with both feet, I wanted to finish up and get a few pics taken of the Leman Russ Executioner that has been sitting on the painting desk in a half painted state for far too long! In order to distinguish this tank from the Leman Russ Vanquisher squadron, I reversed the red and black on the sides of the tank and the turret. This brightens up the tank overall, and coupled with the yellow spot colors on the weapon housings, it’s almost festive! …In a unstoppable, plasma-spewing juggernaut sort of way. I tried my hand at doing a sort of “plasma pulse” look on the executioner cannon with mixed success. I’m not totally sold on it, but I’m unsure how to better convey the look. I added a bit of decoration in the form of unit numbering and waterside transfers, and have just about got all the tanks done up to the point where I can begin the weathering process – I’ve been waiting to get them all done before I do that, in order to keep the weathering looking ‘uniform’ across all of the vehicles. They definitely need a little something extra, while the black and red is fairly striking, getting some dirt, grime and paint scraped back to bare metal should help to give them all a little more personality. In other news, the army I’m scheming on for Adepticon was built over the weekend, expect to see a mess of Dark Angel posts over the next month or two. Get on that bandwagon and ride! Woo!

At the Vinn Inn Gamers last night, played against Dale. He runs Necrons with many flyers and is known as some evil overlord or something. Forge World Releases New Terminators, Voss Lightning

Forge World has released a slew of great new models including the Justaerin Terminators and Voss Pattern Lightning. I have to say, this and the previously noted Deathshroud Terminators show the absolute incredible velocity of new products we are seeing with the release of The Horus Heresy book. Stop the insanity!
