Eldar – Guardian Defenders painted

Eldar – Guardian Defenders painted

Spent enough time painting tanks and other big things recently, so it was time to spend some time on the infantry! I have to admit, I’m getting tired of painting blue and yellow so it’s about time to move on to something new but before that happens the unit of Guardian Defenders got a lashing of paint! Pretty straightforward – I went with the same blue recipe used on the vehicles, but rather than sponging the various blues, I went with a mix of drybrushing and stippling with an old brush. The blue wash then tied it all together and muted it a bit. I knew I didn’t want to go crazy with the yellow, so just the helmets and a couple bits of cloth got the hot orange/golden yellow treatment. Once that was done, the weapons got the bone color, and then I went in and painted the umpteen zillion little tiny gems. Probably could have gotten away without that step, but since there’s just going to be the one unit of guardians they deserved a little extra work. Overall, a right serviceable unit who will likely hang back and sit on an objective (and get carved into ribbons by whatever looks at them funny). Next up? Who knows?

Abaddon the Despoiler challenges you!

Abaddon the Despoiler challenges you!

I’ve got a complete boner over Abaddon lately; this guy is the ultimate beat stick unit in 40k and I think is perhaps the best single close combat model in the entire game. To show why Abaddon is the Warmaster I think going to do some 1v1 challenges and test Abaddon’s mettle. Behold the Warmaster! Before Abaddon starts getting into scrapes lets see what Abaddon can do. Abaddon is a super charged S.M Captain and is basically

Forge World Releases Glaive Super Heavy

Forge World Releases Glaive Super Heavy

Forge World has released the newest Space Marine super-heavy tank, the Glaive! From Forge World: Space Marine Legion Glaive The Legion Glaive Super-heavy Special Weapons Tank is a variant of the Fellblade. Armed with a Volkite Carronade, it is designed to destroy xenos beasts and incinerate enemy light vehicles at a single sweep. While the Glaive has been issued to all eighteen Legiones Astartes in limited quantities, the Salamanders and Dark Angels have long been noted to field Glaives as a matter of course; the XVIIIth Legion’s artifice is more than sufficient to maintain and replicate the arcane Volkite technology, while the provenance and honour of the Ist Legion means that their war matériel and weaponry are ancient indeed. The Legion Glaive, designed by Stuart Williamson, is a multi-part resin and plastic kit that is packed with detail. It is available to pre-order now for despatch from Friday 28th June and experimental rules to field this powerful super-heavy as part of a Space Marine Legion army are available to download now. The Glaive is an interesting variation of the Fellblade and has an awesome gun on it the Volkite Carronade, whose rules are here . Expect to see one of these in my Raven Guard army! Loken

Eldar Codex Review: Troops

Eldar Codex Review: Troops

Continuing on from the Eldar HQ, here are the troops. Here’s the Eldar HQ review if you missed it. Dire Avengers The humble Dire Avenger has had a cheeky single point increase in the new codex, but considering the Avenger gets battle focus and anicent enemy in that I do not think that’s too bad. Also do not forget that the avenger catapult has the bladestorm special rule. As well as getting the new army wide special rules, Avengers gained plasma grenades and counter-attack. Having counter-attack is a bit bizarre as they have 18″ range guns and with battle focus could easily run out of the way. But hey ho it is a nice bonus so I not going to complain too much. The Avengers took a nerf by losing the former bladestorm rule (let them fire twice in the shooting phase in lieu of shooting next turn), I personally wasn’t a huge fan of this power, though I know some other people liked it.

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Fast Attack

New Eldar Codex Unit Reviews – Fast Attack

Probably the weakest section of the codex but that’s often the case recently. Once again the aspect warriors are still nice models but with mediocre rules they’ll not see the light of day very much. However, this section does contain the only reasonable dedicated anti-air choice in the codex. Swooping Hawks The fun of swooping hawks in the old codex was dropping them in, pie-plating a unit then taking off again before any reprisals. They can still do that in the new book but as before it’s a case of whether you think the shenanigans are worth it. They have a decent amount of firepower but it’s only S3 AP5. The most interesting thing about them is their appropriately titled special rule “Herald of Victory”. With it they can deep strike without scatter. When you combine this with Skyleap they can be doing their grenade pack thing and in turn 5 drop in to contest an objective late on. They’ll be an irritation to your opponent but they won’t necessarily win you the game if it goes beyond turn 5.

First impression of Eldar

First impression of Eldar

I got my first game in against Eldar last night. I have also now got the codex too and had a quick skim. I’ll do a quick first impression which maybe will be useful for people who have yet to play them or wish to know more info. I will get more indepth reviews up shortly. * I will only be talking about units which interest me or I have looked at. So some units I won’t be covering just yet. Battle Focus This is an excellent army wide (almost) rule Eldar get. It allows a unit to shoot and run or run and shoot. This allows you to re-position models into cover, closer to objectives or completely out of line or sight or even out of rapid fire range – pre-measuring is going to come in a lot when using battle focus.
