2400 End Times Monster Mash Tournament List

With the new end times rules, I realized that at 2400 points, we can fit 2 dragons and 2 phoenixes. Having not actually played in that scenario, I’m curious if anyone else on here thinks a list like this could work. The plan is to have each dragon pair up with a phoenix to ensure that the dragon gets its attacks before its opponents, use the silver helms to deliver extra punch of absorb challenges where needed and the reavers to help redirect threats to the flanks.

    Lord:
Prince, Star Dragon, Dragon Armour, Giant Blade, Enchanted Shield, Talisman of Endurance, Potion of Foolhardiness

    Heroes:
    Caradryan on Ashtari
Dragon Mage, Level 2 Armour of Destiny

    Core:
9 Silver Helms, Shields, Full Command
9 Silver Helms, Shields, Full Command
    5 Reavers, Bows, Standard
    5 Reavers, Bows, Standard, Champion

    Rare:
    Frostheart Phoenix

An alternative for a bit more punch would be to drop the reavers and bump up the silver helms to 16 and 10, but I’m a bit worried I won’t be able to punch through my opponent’s lines fast enough to avoid counter-charges.

Seems like it could be a fun list, i've certainly never tried a monster themed list, but i'll try and give you some helpful observations:

Firstly, i'd drop the dragon armour on the prince and swap it for heavy armour, i know you'll be losing the 2+ v flaming, but other than that you already have a ward save of 4++. This way, you can grab heavy armour and a lion cloak for that bit extra against shooting, which will be this armies bane. Also, whats the foolhardiness for? devastating charge with the most powerful dragon in the game, or immune to psychology for a terror causing unit? just a few nitpickings, all in all the dragon looks a solid build. If you really wanted the 2+ v flaming, you could take the Dragon helm instead of the enchanted shield.

Your dragon mage needs to be specialised... is he there to pump out spells or just to get the dragon? If he's there for spells, then i'd suggest dropping the AoD for normal dragon armour, and then giving him the ruby ring of ruin of Khaine's ring, which would also give him a bonus to his ward if it goes of (6++ to 5++ is nothing to be sniffed at). I would assume however that he is there to get the dragon, in which case do you need the lv2? With only the DM for magic support your a little thin anyways, so i'd just commit to combat.

Finally, i'm a bit torn by your reavers. If you successfully use them for war machine hunting, i'd perhaps go with 3 units of 5 and one big silver helm unit. with no war machines armies are going to struggle to kill your great beasts before CC and thats a plus.

Alternatively, Reavers aren't really that great at stopping counter charges in a list like this, simple because they should be hunting war machines. still, i'd be tempted to have a big 3 rank unit of silvers and 3 units of 5 reavers with the express purpose of war machine hunting.

hope this helps a bit, good luck.

Firstly, I'd drop Caradryan and just take two Frosties in your Rare. Frees you up some points. Fill in the rest of your Rare with Eagles to replace your Reavers. The Eagles aren't as good as Reavers but they're arguably better if you only want to stop counter charges (cheaper, and the only way to do it successfully would be to hold and die - in which case an Eagle is just as good as Reavers, for 35pts less). Eagles are also pretty good at knocking down enemy shooting, which helps. That much flying in an army is disgusting.

The Dragon Mage isn't worth it, but you can take up to 50% of your points in Lords now, so that's 1200pts worth of Dragon. Figure, the rest of your army is minimum 25% core and then 25% rare, you're going to be just fine. I'd take two Princes on Dragons. You don't need much kit on the Princes - the Dragons are the biggest sell for that unit, and the Princes are only hit with 1/3 of the shooting, and combat will target whoever is easier to wound.

Like Prince said, I'd either field a big block of Silvers as my Core, or I'd at least get the units up to 10 each. Getting 12 each would be even better, giving you an ablative wound before you lose your second rank.

Your biggest problem here won't be counter charges or shooting: it will be Steadfast. A Death Mage wouldn't be a bad take, even if it means going with an Archmage on a Dragon "just this once". Otherwise, should be a fun game.

Be aware that if this is a monster-mash themed tournament, and/or they're allowing full End Times material along with the 50% Lords allowance, you're in for a world of hurt. Nagash, Exalted Karl Franz, The Glottkin, and Exalted Karl F'ing Franz, will wreck an army like this. You don't have anything in your lists here that's going to take them down, and High Elves as an army tend to suffer against big gribbly monsters.
