......... and now for something completely different........... I'm starting empire! *gasp*. The plan is to build a 1000pt Stirland Force. As I think and army of poor woodsmen wouldn't be as 'uniformed' as the 'normal' state troops I'm going to be building everything out of Militia kits as they fit the bill perfectly. Plus they're cheap!

Anyway, I did some testers.

Great Sword

Swordsmen

Oh, and this project thread will also be dedicated to my Mordheim Warband and Board :)

Forgot the 'to do list'

Empire General - Great Weapon
Wizard - Level 1 Beasts
Wizard - Level 2 Life

35 Swordsmen with 2x 10 Crossbow men for mates
18 Great swords with 10 Hand gunners for mates

10 Archers.

Commissar:
Are they? Ah well, so much for an original idea!! I went for them because I've been playing Mordheim religiously for the last couple of months and have fallen in love with the sprues. There are just so many 'bits' and you can make so many characterful poses and characters out of them. As for the boxes, GW probably will as all such boxes are following suit. So buy them whilst you can!!! Oh, and I forgot to out up a list for them so I'll pop that in the first post.

The shield is off a Chaos Marauder with the star sliced off.

ChadMS:
Cheers :) I always try to take a little bit longer on the face than any part as I think it 'makes' the model. Plus it's the bit people look at first so if you do it well people ignore the rest of the painting, even if it's shoddy!

Rampant Haddock:
Hey dude, glad you found your way here. Well, I hadn't really though about Great swords being expensive. Hmmm, maybe I'll do some two handed Axe men mixed in to the group? As for fluff......... I have no idea at this moment in time. Army wise they're a woodland patrol force but I haven't come up with any background for the characters yet.

Cheers for the responses. I've just finished the White on all 9 members of my Mordheim Warband and base coated the Green. So I should have these done in a day or two.

Perhaps not expensive in money, but any two handed sword would cost more to make than a simple one or axe. Obviously the better quality weapon the harder and longer it takes to make, time is money! Although maybe it's easier than I thought, I can't say i'm a blacksmith.

It's your army of course, do what you like with it just as long we get to see nice pictures!

Swords are a specialist weapon when it comes to creation. While an axe could be made by anyone a greatsword would need a great deal of skill to make. That said there are fluff ways around it. Paint the guys with greatswords up as older guys. Grey hair etc. That way you can say they arehanded down as heirlooms. The other answers of of course they stole it and that not everyone in stirland is poor.

Although I now want to see guys with massive Dane axes. You'll just have an issue not making them look like cheap halberds!

A

ps:marauder shield you say hmm may have a rummage in the bits box later and nick that idea if that's ok.

Is this wise? (Considering the very real possiblity of a new army book next year? plus the new Warhammer Forge book coming at the end of next week?).

Then again, I suppose 1000pts is a good "launch mat".

GreatSwords - If I can scavenge any Marauder flail arms from somewhere I'll build some Lumberjack looking guys (He's a lumberjack and he's ok!). If not I'll have to do the whole unit as Great Swords and do them all as oldish looking chaps. Oh and the two handed sword arms come with the militia sprue so it's no extra cost Haddock.

Kuffy:
Well, as I said they were testers. I wont be doing any more green codpieces.

MrFox:
Yeah I know they're coming out and I intend to grab some war carts when they come out. Unless GW decides to ditch all their core choices and Great Swords I should be alright with the choices I've made ;)

Commissar:
Ideas are means to be stolen. Use it and abuse it.

Ok well I've FINISHED my Mordheim Warband. Pics are a bit dark but it's the best I can do. Here we go............

From left to right we have Mad Jack McMad (Champion), Uncle Albert (Captain) and Pirate Steve (Champion)

On the left we have Little Josh and on the right Little Johny (Young Bloods)

Left to Right. Whuan, One tooth Mcgee, Nervous Neil and One eye Jack. (Henchmen)

Here's all of them together :)

Very cool, never played Mordheim but it does appeal to the role-player in me.

Looking forward to seeing more, let us know how the warband fairs.

As to the Great Swords, it may be better if they are Grey-Bearded Veterans, to help explain the stubborn nature of the unit. You could put an onion on one of their belts in honour of Abe Simpson's strike breakers. (Not sure if you are a simpsons fan tho)

Aye Mordheim is pretty fun. It's not the best Skirmish based game GW does, LOTRs is better in my opinion. But your characters can increase in stats and skills (and injuries) so it can get quite fun after a while.

The Warband has a had a few games and a few of the Boys have earn't nick names. 'One eye Jo' for example doesn't have one eye. He's just shot the eye out of 3 heroes he's shot at!! Other than that they're doing alright, no deaths 'so far'.......

I will do the 'Great swords' as old men. With Lumberjack guys mixed in if I can get them. Maybe, if I can't, I'll see if I can convert them from the Militia kit anyway as killing people with Lumberjacks sounds pretty awesome. They wont have the big muscles though............

If only I had either of those! Luckily I'm getting 16 Marauders with the flail/Great weapon arms so I can happily Kit bash to my hearts content. I kinda want to do the whole unit as lumber jacks now but I've made one 'proper' Great sword and he'll look highly out of place....... Do you think I should do them half and half or just use him as a Unit champion? Maybe the unit champion for the Swordsmen?

Ugh, I dunno. Bloody Ideas.

Great looking band there, nice colours and an array of folks. I would suggest you get some hammers in there, very good for the game. I think the greatswords would looks great if they looks like older men, veterans brought out of retirement or back into the force in times of need. A little rag-tag look to them would add a lot of character I think.

KUFFY:
Aye hammers are cool. It may not be WYSIWYG but Whuan and One eye Jo both have two clubs which do the same thing as hammers. I've yet to buy the Great Sword Model and the Club/Shield guy into the band yet. Hence why they have no names.

Well, when I get my toys I'll have a play around and see what I can some up with. I like the idea of some retired Great swords leading a bunch of over enthusiastic burly ********. So we'll see what I can come up with. Right, seeing as I have no actual toys to be working on right now (thats a lie but at least I have no Empire toys to be working on) I've cracked on my my Mordheim board. Buildings are still W.I.P.

So here is the main board. I managed to get a complete replica of Scorched brown from a DIY store. I'll dry brush it up with a light brushing of Bestial brown.

Crater..... Pic didn't come out very bright!! It's highlighted up to Scorpion green so it's quite Vivid.

Some WIP buildings. A Tavern and a Guard house.

And a bridge that looks like Orcs built it.

Oh yeah, clubs are the same. I armed most of my Possessed Warband with them. I miss Mordheim, only played it for a short period but it was loads of fun and quite quick. Well, the idea of the older guys works when you consider the province you're going with it quite rural, I could see retiring warriors going there to become farmers but keeping their blades above the fireplace just in case.

That board looks amazing dude. I would like to see a kind of plaza type area - a market place. This would give you the chance to make small pieces of movable terrain such as ruined stalls, boxes, rubbish build up or rubble. Perhaps a damaged fountain or something? But otherwise for Mordheim, plenty of terrain, buildings of various leveles - Maybe a ruined clock tower or something? - to mix up the levels and such.

Cheers man :) I'm quite pleased with the buildings. It's been years since I've built terrain like this and, truth be told, I've missed it. A shame I'll have to leave this board here in Aus :(

Well Stirland is the Rural area of the Empire with lots of Woodland and vast tracts of unpopulated areas. So Beasts and Life matched the woodland army most of all, hence why I went for them. Although the fact that both their signature spells are AWESOME helped in the choosing process too!! I was going to model them as Druids or something and have them as part of the army/area rather than them being sent from Altdorf or where ever it is the Eight Colleges are.

The Priest I was going to do as a Priest of Taal as well. So he'll look quite woodlandy as well. Here's hoping the new Empire book as rules for them. Although I hear it's Morr, Sigmar and Ulric that are getting rules :(
I like the idea of driuds, works with the theme. Otherwise make them look very much like they live in an impoverished area, so no gold or bright silver but more worn clothing, dulled metals or leathers. I'd love to see you do a Taal priest, that would be pretty awesome.

Buildings look awesome, can't wait to see the finished product with those guys!

Love the feel of the Empire force as well, too often you see Talabecland and Altdorf represented in armies while poor ol' Stirland get the boot. The "grizzled veterens" look is a great idea for those GS's, I must say. If you want to keep a rugged and poor theme going with the army you have picked two excellent lores! You could pull off some pretty awesome conversions for both Life and Beasts while fitting in with the whole "poor and living off the land" theme. That is, unless these high and mighty wizards are from the capitol. Then I suppose spit marks would make interesting features as well :D

Keeping my eye on this one!

No........... I haven't. But thats a very nice model. One which I may have to base a conversion off of. Thanks for the Idea :) Ugh, there are so many models I wish I had bought........ Oh well. The wonders of hind sight.

Cheers. Does anyone else have any ideas for buildings? I'm going to do a completely trashed building. With just a few walls and floors left standing so it will be mainly 'open'. Not sure where than one will go, next to the crater would make sense now that I think about it. Anything else? Maybe a Bell tower??

Everything is looking cool so far, for buildings? I would have thought about looking into how rural societies were ages ago, a lumber camp? somwhere for those axemen, things like a mill/bakery or a store..idk how poor or even if they would be in town but it's an idea.

I remember in feudal societies a lord would charge you to use everything from a bakery to a wine press, I guess if they are ruled over by someone then a town hall? some run down peasant homes? or a tavern? somewhere for them to wash away their poor lives.

Haddock:
Cheers mate. The board isn't supposed to be "rural". It's a Mordheim board, have you played it? It's set in a 'ruined' city........ called Mordheim lol.

Kuffy:
Of course they will have axes. What else would lumberjacks carry?? The Druid....... yeah I think I'm going to base him on Getafix.

Update. Found enough parts to do this guy. He's the Standard bearer to the 'Great Swords'. The random 'blob' of Green stuff on his base is actually a tree stump (believe it or not)

Looks really good. I wish I was still using my 'Irish' Empire army, or that I'd been at my current (or better yet, yours) skill level when I was working on them. The idea for my army was that it represented the Irish militias if the Napoleon's Black Company had actually made it across the channel and backed the revolts against the British occupation. Therefore I have tons of Free Company milling about, plus lots of Free Co. conversions. None of my uniforms are very 'uniform', and the few high-tech bits and a few of the officers/engineers are wearing the dark blue uniforms of French Black Co. Fluffwise it was actually a small peasant rebellion in Stirland backed by Marienburgers. But enough.

Sweet looking army. Will we be seeing any of 'The Little General' from the LO Campaign in this force? Maybe as one of your unit champs?

You shall indeed!! I'm not quite sure as 'what' though. Didn't he have a Handgun/Pistol? I dunno, what did you see them as? What was that dying sergeant? Halberdier? Swordsmen? Was he from Stirland? Where is the LO campaign set anyway?

Thats a nice theme for an Empire army. I'm trying not to do anything relating to Sharpe but it's bloody hard (I'll save that for when I re-do my Praetorians).

Thanks. Nice to see that you follow ALL my threads lol.
