The Tribe of the Tangled Hook (Ogre Kingdoms Army)

Well, I guess I should explain what this is all about.

Hi, my name is Scott, and I have an addiction, an addiction to army starting and plastic/metal crack. This is a major problem. And this is my attempt to deal with it.
As long as I can remember, I've been an incorrigible modeller; always starting conversions and armies and games and pretty much anything that took my fancy. It has cost me dearly. I don't know how much money I've spent on my plastic/metal crack addiction, and I have nothing concrete to show for it. No army I can point to and say "I did that", hell, I don't really even have a single cohesive unit that I can point to and say "I did that" about. That is just wrong.

Coming up on a year ago now, I lost my job; I wasn't attached to it as such, but it was an income, and allowed me to provide for my small family. I had just bought the Ogre Battalion when it happened, and so I decided to make the most of things and work at turning my battalion into an army. Over time, and countless lists later, I thought I had settled on a list that I would be able to play with. It was to revolve around a Firebelly/Leadbelcher unit with Shooty Maneaters and support. I'd even converted a Firebelly and an extra Leadbelcher to fill out the unit properly; but then it happened. I was distracted/inspired by something else which would make me restart (kinda) the army again.
Anyone who enjoys watching Disney movies, or has a child who enjoys watching Disney movies would probably have seen the big one from a couple of years ago "Tangled" the new take on the Rapunzel story. My daughter, delight that she is, had been watching it at least once a day for a week straight, and always insisting that I watch it with her (since her mother is out to work these days). It's a pretty good movie, some funny stuff, some stupid stuff, and the perfect amount of Disney nonsense to make it bearable. Anyway, one day I was watching it with her yet again, when I noticed that one particular character looked rather Ogre-like, except for his size. I had been working on the Ogre regiment and still had a few Ogres to build, so as is sensible, I built this thug in plastic (with a little poetic license). And so my list changed yet again - and this time for the final time. I have had enough, this addiction is going down.

    Oh, what a wall-o-text.
    On to the project stuff.
The Tribe of the Tangled Hook features a Butcher inspired by the Hook-Hand Thug from Tangled, and some stuff I'd built/converted previously.
The 1000pt list is as follows:
It's not particularly competitive, but then again, I'm in it for the fun not the competition.
Incidentally, the Gnoblars are the Command options (Standard and Musician)

    Butcher @ 178.0 pts (General)
    - Level 2 Upgrade: Lore of the Great Maw
    - Ironfist; Sword of Striking; Dispel Scroll

    8 Ogres @ 276.0 pts
    - Bellower; Standard Bearer; Ironfist

    3 Leadbelchers @ 139.0 pts
    - Bellower

    1 Sabretusk
    1 Sabretusk

    2 Ogre Mournfang Cavalry @ 165.0 pts
    - Bellower; Standard Bearer; Ironfist; Heavy Armour; Gleaming Pennant

    1 Giant

    Total Roster Cost: 1000.0

Picture time I think. These are all pre-GS WIPs, I have some GS, but I need to find time to get working on it/learn how to manipulate it properly.
I guess the first Ogre I should show is the Butcher, the guy who started the list
    185px-Hook_Hand_Sitting.gif
I still have to GS him a gut, and a belt to suit the original inspiration, and a few straps for various bits of gear, but nothing excessive.

The front (command) rank of the Ogre Regiment follows (including the Butcher)

    Middle rank

    And rear rank

The Giant I've had sitting around for ages, infact the only thing that I've done to it recently was to add a gutplate from the Stonehorn kit (which I got with some bitz I needed for another conversion I've been working on)

Although there are only 3 Leadbelchers in the initial list, I've got 4 built for later lists.

That's all I've got done for the 1000pt list so far, I've got a couple of Chrace Lions to turn into Sabretusks, and I have to fund the couple of Mournfangs still, but that should happen fairly soon; but that is the majority of the army ready for GS and paint.

I found a spare Ogre body the other day, and figured that I'd build the BSB that the 1500pt list would need.

Looking like a good start. The few conversions you have are quite subdued which is a good thing since the best conversions, in my opinion, are the ones that don't look like conversions and make people wonder where the model is from

Actually there's only 1 ogre that doesn't have a little bit of conversion, and that's the middle Ogre in the middle rank.
The standard bearer actually has the standard bearer arm with the hand removed and an ironfist put on, the musician has a custom built flail, the guy with two ironfists is obvious, the other ogre in the middle rank has the ironfist on the other hand. For the last rank, the first guy has a bellower arm with an ironfist, the second has a minotaur club as a weapon, and the last guy I could almost say is stock, but his arm is in mid-gutting swing.

Oh, and the command Gnoblars are obviously converted too.
The standard is from the Empire State trooper box, and the Musician's trumpet/horn is from the VC Skeletons, and he is actually the model that had me doing the Gnoblar command idea in the first place; it wouldn't have happened if the trumpet had fitted on an ogre.

If anyone wants extra views of any of my conversions, just ask and I'll organise it

Always was a fan of your work mate. Consider me subscribed!

I'm surprised that Gnoblar is holding that Standard though. He must have been working out a lot of Christmas.

I have always wanted to start a Noblar slavers army. So do many of the ogre packs have noblars in them?

    Yes and no.
Basically each Ogre sprue has a couple of Gnoblars on it, with command sprues and specialist (Irongut or Leadbelcher) having a couple more, but they are definitely sculpted to be "assistant" Gnoblars, not fighters. The Gnoblar box has the fighty little buggers in it, and with 12 bodies and 15 heads on each sprue (2 of) you get a little variety.
    BUT
The new Battalion box, no-longer contains Gnoblar Fighter sprues (which the old one did), so there goes the easiest way of getting them since you got 14 Ogre bodies as well.
Basically, Gnoblars have been gnobbled in terms of sales; you have to specifically buy them if you want them.

Yesterday was a day without interuptions, no screaming child demanding attention and/or movies (how many 2 1/2 year olds do you know that know all of the Avengers and the best lines from the movie?), nothing needing to be done; GS was the plan, start small, and work up to the Hunter and sabretusks and all of their fur sculpting.
Was the plan. I misplaced my sculpting tools and tore my desk and boxes up looking for them to no avail. Then stuff needed doing, and the plan was dead.

Guess what I found 10 mins ago.....those damned tools, but today is not a day for GS, it's another daughter day. But I can guarantee this, it will happen soon.

Finally got some time to do some sculpting or as I like to call it "can I manage to make this greenstuff not suck".
I'm still waiting for stuff to cure, so no pics yet, but I've done various straps for the Butcher and BSB's gear, started the Butcher's belly (still got definition and a belt to do). Possibly the simplest thing I did was a couple of long bits of rope to "hold" the Giant's gutplate (one around the back of the neck, one around the back).

I also found out how simple it is to do fur. I have had a RatOgre with a Minotaur head conversion sitting on my desk for a little while, and I needed to put some fur on the join at the neck, so I experimented with it, and I also gave it a couple of vaguely piglike ears to give it bit more definition to the head. After seeing how easy that was, I pulled my Hunter conversion out of his ziplock bag and sculpted fur around the leg extensions he's got (all up he'll be about 3mm taller than the average Ogre).

With time running out for more work, and with the remaining bit of GS I had mixed, I made a hat...kind of a derby/bowler style hat. I don't know who it's for yet, but we'll see.

    Kutchek the Hunter

I've finally gotten back to putting something in here.
I've had Kutchek pretty much ready for final GS and then (theoretically) painting for a while, but I didn't post him up because I needed to do some work on his base. And so I got around to that tonight.
Kutchek isn't your standard Hunter build; he's got Longstrider for when I get him a pack of sabres, and he's carrying Sword of Battle and Enchanted Shield, as well as a Blood Vulture. And it's this last bit that's been delaying pics. I didn't have anywhere really to sit the vulture on either him or the base; which means I had to figure out what to do.
The solution was a tree, a dead, gnarled tree that would fit in the back corner, and give the whole thing some real depth.
A bit of Florist's wire and some inspirational pics from Mr Google, and this is the result, awaiting a GS covering, and final assembly.

There is still a little bit of work to do to get it to the point where it's ready to paint, but this is Kutchek the Hunter, and his blood vulture Skwaaark.
