Hi, I'm just recently getting back into the hobby and the last time i played or collected chaos it was with the 3rd edition which i thought had a lot more options and i really enjoyed the different cults(iron warriors in particular) but the new codex has some options for something similar, just a little more confined to the 4 chaos powers instead of other chapters.

I want to start with a small army, about 1000pts, thats what my other friends have at the moment and i want to stay within their points ranges. It also won't seem as daunting to paint if i start small and build up to 3000pts or so.

I really like the death guard/plague marines vibe, lots of troops and very little vehicles/armor.

This is what i've chosen so far, with help from a couple of people in chat and other places:

Chaos Lord: 175pts
wargear: Wings, Mark of Nurgle, Daemon Weapon, personal icon

Terminator Squad: (5) 175 pts
Wargear: Reaper Autocannonx1

Death Guard Marines: (7) 181pts
wargear: melta gunx2

Death Guard Marines: (7)
wargear: plasma gunx2

Havocs: (5)
Lascannon x2
Missile Launcher x2

Its really a brief quick army list, didnt put hours and hours of thought into it, so i'm sure some things could be changed around for things i didnt think of.

The one thing i was thinking of was adding obliterators instead of havocs, and also adding a rhino squad to one of the death guard squads or havocs.

I like the options chaos has but its also extremely daunting to try to pick something and go with it. I like slannesh, both the painting and the psyker spells they have, thousand sons have great rules and abilities, but i really hate their models, so if i went with a thousand sons army i would probably have to convert some regular space marines without the ridiculous eqyptian helmets. The only cult i dont like would be the khorne-based armies. I like hand-to-hand but khorne just doesnt appeal to me i guess. Plague Marines have incredible models, with great stats , FnP + toughness + fearless is pretty nice, especially with blight grenades so charging doesnt hurt anywhere near as badly.

Let me know what you think , and what i should do with my list, thanks in advance!

edit: removed term armor from chaos lord, apparently cant do wings + term armor.

Great Lord choice, however I don't like daemon weapons since they can screw me over, but that's the whole reason why I play CSM since I like the ability to have some of the best and toughest and most reliable troops in the game, just my preference though, also hes the only assualty guy, it will be hard to get him up in assault without getting shot at, ever think about giving him Termi armor for deep strike?.. I don't know he's just really unsupported.

Great, little pricey for a 1k point game to include but will add a lot of good to your army, ecspecially since you don't see much ap 2 fielded in 1k
Death Guard Marines: (7) 181pts
wargear: melta gunx2

Death Guard Marines: (7)
wargear: plasma gunx2
Great, a little slow but will get the job done little bit scary against guard though since your only fire base is the Havocs.

Havocs: (5)
Lascannon x2
Missile Launcher x2
Great anti tank unit, I prefer Oblitz, but thats me,, I just like them in a tourney situation in which you fight different enemies and armies, they've never failed me yet !

thanks for the advice !

I was thinking about replacing the terms with a squad of raptors with an aspiring champ to support the winged lord.

with the original plan, i was going to have the terms escorting the lord, but i couldnt have wings and lord together(plan was to jump him far ahead, deep strike the terms in)

I like the raptors a lot better though.

im also considering swapping out the havocs for a defiler for some armored support and ordnance, im only concerned about keeping the fluff in tact for death guards.

I think 1 armored piece out of an entire 1000 pts isnt too bad, they do say they use a few pieces of armor in the fluff, just not very much and mostly infantry, and i think ive done that. Plus the defiler is walking on legs not wheels, maybe consider it infantry as well =P

The Raptors squad sounds great, how ever the single piece of armor doesn't at least not a Defiler since you cant fire indirectly anymore, it dies pretty fast. I would say keep the Havocs as is, or add a unit of Oblitz or somthing around that I wouldn't go armor at this many points.

New Updated List

Chaos Sorcerer(1)(190pts)
Gear: Mark of Nurgle, Wings, Familiar, Melta Bombs
Spells: Warptime, Nurgle's Rot

Raptors(5)160
Gear: Icon of Nurgle, Flamers(2)

Raptors Champion(1)65
Gear: Lightning Claws, melta bombs

The sorceror and the raptors will be joined as one unit, for very quick jump attacks, using warptime to ensure lots of force weapon hits, and nurgle's rot to wipe out swarms. The raptors and the aspiring champion will add a sickening amount of close combat attacks, and with marks of nurgle, will be hard to kill if any enemies are left after the assault.

Plague Marines(7)191
Gear: Plasma-Gun(2)

Plague Marines(7)181
Gear: Melta-Gun(2)

Both Squads of Plague marines will be for marching steadily ahead, Once they get into range, firing a few times, if someone is stupid enough to charge them, they lose their charging extra attacks, and will have a tough time killing what they've stumbled into. Also right after they are charged the plan will be to spring the sorceror/raptors on them.

Havoc Squad(5)205
Gear: Auto-Cannon(2), Missile Launcher(2)

To ensure some more anti-tank killing , and auto-cannon for helping to take out more enemies if needed.

total:992

what can i do with the 8 points? i was thinking about upgrading one of the raptor's flamers to a melta gun , i think i might be a little paranoid about trying to take as much tank killing as possible. I have 2 melta bomb attacks in the sorceror/raptor squad, havocs with krak missiles, plague marines with melta-guns. That should be plenty , right?
