Hello... my friend want to start to play WHFB *cheers!* and wanted a challenging army to play, he loves undead stuff... so TKs!
I'm currently helping him to put together a medium sized allround army... but since my knowledge in TK arn't that good (besides having read through their armybook a few times :p) you'll have to help me and my friend here.

Ok so here's a sample list... we haven't decided on any magic items and equipment on the characters yet.

Heroes:
Tomb prince + 50pts magic items + chariot. = 195pts
Icon bearer + 50pts magic items + chariot. = 160pts
Liche priest + 50pts magic items. = 165pts

Core:
25 x Skellies + shield + spear + light armour + full command = 275pts
5 X Light horsemen = 70pts
3 X tomb swarm = 135pts

Special:
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
4 x Carrions = 96pts

Rare:
Sreaming catapult = 90pts

that makes 1401pts in total... 99pts left.

So I bet this list was terrible :p...

My suggestions would be to cut the light horsemen, get a unit of chariots (you will have to cut either the carrion or a tomb swarm for them- but a single prince on a chariot won't do much without backup), and cut the Icon bearer in favor of another liche priest. Or if you don't want the chariots and would rather the carrion or the scorps, take the prince off the chariot and stick him with the skeletons. You should also get more units of skeletons... right now you have a single block as a road bump. I'd say add another block or two.

hm... ok... I was kind of trying to build a little of the battalion box :p så he had to buy as little extra stuff as possible. But I don't think that's gonna work now... so 3 box of skellies instead fo a battalion then :p.

Heroes:
Tomb Prince
Magic Items: Deathmask of Kharnut, Enchanted Shield
Equipment: Flail, Light Armour
149pts

Liche Priest 1 Hierophant
Magic Items: Staff of Sorcery
165pts

Liche Priest 2
Magic Items: Cloak of Dunes, Nefrra's Plagues of Mighty Incarnations
165pts

Core:
24 x Skellies + shield + spear + light armour + Standard = 250pts
25 x Skellies + shield + spear + light armour + Standard = 260pts
3 X tomb swarm = 135pts

Special:
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
4 x Carrions = 96pts

Rare:
Sreaming catapult + skulls of the foe = 110pts

Total Army Cost: 1500pts.

We think that terror might just come in handy as it even works on undead or daemonic units :p... but if it's total waste of pts just tell. I wanted him to keep the carrions for taking out enemies fast cavs. I bet nothing is more irritating than anoying fast cavs. The scorpions and swarms are there to take away smal enemy elite units and warmachine crews. The catapult is... well it crushes things :D... hehe nah accually he just want to learn guessing the fast way.
I don't understand why the Icon bearer is so bad... ok he can't cast incarnations... but he reduces the amount of wounds taken if you loose combat.
Aaaany way the priests will be busy casting incarnations left and right. I gave once liche priest staff of sorcery mainly because that he will be facing me alot at the beginning and I play DE... the +1 to dispell somewhat nullifies the +1 to cast from my mages. But we don't want advice on an anti DE list now... cause he will be playing other armies as well at a local hobby shops and such.
Ok so he likes tomb guard the most, but I don't know if they're cost effective such smal games... or even cost effective to buy ($ wise), after all he must pay almost 50euro for 20 of them. Do you think it's worth it to replace 25 skellies and a scorpion a with unit of 25 tomb guards and a banner? another question... are bows worth it?

I will give it a go, although my knowledge of Tomb kings is limited.

The thing your army really lacks is punch. There are no chariots or Ashabti, and at this level that could be costly. I would suggest the following alterations:

1) Drop the spears from the skellies. They don't need the extra attacks and the hand weapon shiled combo in combat will increase there survivability.
2) Drop one tomb scorpian
3) With the spare points get a set of 3 chariots with a standard and musician.

I hope this helps :ninja:

hm... do you think that the 3 chariots will make it up for the scorpion in this case? At 1500pts I think that not many armies will have alot of hard hitting units and even fewer have monsters at that pts size. What 3 chariots gives me is 3D3 impact hits on the charge and 12 S3 hits every round. Scorpion will give me 4 S5 hits and killing blow and it has magic resisance 1.
I think the scorpion is better shuited to kill hard hitting units than the chariots. Mainly cause I gets guaranteed 4 S5 hits every turn and they're killing blow. Witch makes even the best armoured units think twice before engaging the scorpion in combat.
The chariots gives a mighy 3D3 impacts hits witch can be better than 4 S5 attacks the first round, but the remaning rounds it'll be pretty weak with its S3 attacks... witch I already gets from loads of skellies. but... I may be wrong what do others think?

Here's a alternative list where we've replaced the cataputl with a casket. What do you think?

Heroes:
Tomb Prince
Magic Items: Deathmask of Kharnut, Enchanted Shield
Equipment: Flail, Light Armour
149pts

Liche Priest 1 Hierophant (casket liche)
Magic Items: Staff of Sorcery
165pts

Liche Priest 2
Magic Items: Cloak of Dunes, Nefrra's Plagues of Mighty Incarnations
165pts

Core:
24 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard + Musician = 231pts
25 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard + Champion = 245pts
2 X tomb swarm = 90pts

Special:
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
5 x Carrions = 120pts

Rare:
Casket of Souls = 165pts

Total Army Cost: 1500pts.

Skeleton musicians and champions are pretty worthless. I'd cut them for another skeleton or something. Also, the mobile liche priest should be the hierophant- the casket one is too stationary and can easily be killed by scout units, flying units, and pretty much anything that manages to get to your flank. The Dunes unit can run away. With the Cloak of Dunes liche, I would say drop the plaques and give him the jar that allows him to use a second spell. That way he can move up with the carrion, use the moving spell to move the carrion another 20 " (so 40" in total), and then use the jar to retreat with the liche. Its a good 1st turn warmachine/ mage kill, I think.

Since you have the liche with a casket, it maybe be good to lower the 2 skelly units to 20 and make a ten-man unit of skeletal bowmen (adding another skeleton when dropping the champion) since the liche with the casket can allow them to shoot a second time.

Ok with your advice his list will be like this:

Heroes:
Tomb Prince
Magic Items: Deathmask of Kharnut, Enchanted Shield
Equipment: Flail, Light Armour
149pts

Liche Priest 1 (casket liche)
Magic Items: Staff of Sorcery
165pts

Liche Priest 2 Hierophant
Magic Items: Cloak of Dunes, Heiratic Jar
165pts

Core:
10 x Skellies + Bow = 88pts
19 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard = 181pts
20 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard = 190pts
3 X tomb swarm = 135pts

Special:
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
4 x Carrions = 96pts

Rare:
Casket of Souls = 165pts

Total Army Cost: 1499pts.

-----

But some questiones still remain unanswered:
1. What do you think of the characters equipment and items?... good bad?
2. Do you think replacing one block of skellies and a tomb scorpion is worth a block of 20 tomb guard?
3. Is the casket or the catapult better in this army?
4. Do you recommend other units? (eg Ushabti, Bone Giant etc etc) Over the ones he have on the list?

1. I do not think the deathmask is worth it, other than that they're good.

2. Hell no, skellies and a scorpion are worth far more than TG.

3. Hard to say... The army looks fairly slow, I think either would work. Personal preference.

4. I would say the list looks slow, and chariots would be a nice addition. I don't know what you'd replace though... TK aren't that great in under 2k.

I'm back!

Back to the tombking forum I am.

Alright my very first army was tombkings and I now play A Forest Spirit army and a miniture beast army. But I plan on starting tombkings again and not making the same mistakes I did before. Here is you typed up.

Heroes:
Tomb Prince
Magic Items: Deathmask of Kharnut, Enchanted Shield
Equipment: Flail, Light Armour
149pts

Liche Priest 1 (casket liche)
Magic Items: Staff of Sorcery
165pts

Liche Priest 2 Hierophant
Magic Items: Cloak of Dunes, Heiratic Jar
165pts

Core:
10 x Skellies + Bow = 88pts
19 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard = 181pts
20 x Skellies + shield + light armour + Standard = 190pts
3 X tomb swarm = 135pts

Special:
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
Tomb scorpion = 85pts
4 x Carrions = 96pts

Rare:
Casket of Souls = 165pts

Total Army Cost: 1499pts.

ALright so pretty much you made the same mistakes I did when I started this army. Heres my advice.

1. Skeletons should be used in units of 20-25 warriors. Some have handweapons some with spears but yeah either is good. I would go spears with shields more attacks then.

2.I thinks your tomb prince should lose the mask. so he causes terror. He is a valuable model who doesn't need to go to combat right away. So what good is terror then. Give him a better weapon. Your choosing. Your liche priest should drop the casket of souls. Why because in games less than 2000 you can not expect the casket to be any good. It takes forever to get that thing to work. and a less than 2000 point game means I will go pretty quick. And then that means you wasted 165 some points on something that didn't help at all.

3.If you really want to go catapault be my guest. I always go bone giant. He is totally awwesome when you learn how to use him.

4. Replacing skellies and a scorpion for tombguard. I would go either way. Skeletons and a scorpion are ok and the scorpion does have killing blow and poisned attacks but tombguard have killing blow and if given the proper banner they are pretty tough. Your oppenents characters won't go near them. Give them the banner that recovers the unit every turn. The one with the bound spell. I don't have the book anymore so yeah kinda hard to specify.

5.Ushabti definately. A unit of 3-5 should be all right.

6.Another thing. No skeletons with bows unless your playing over 2000 point games and you would use the tomb queen khalida neferher or something like that that gives them poisned attacks. Just take the archers out they really don't do much good. ALso never have champions or musicians. WHich i see you dont. GOOD. Not worth the points for one more skellie attack and who needs a musician when your unbreakable. Hope this helps

Addressing cryptkeepers points...

1. HW are always better for undead. The WS is rubbish anyway, and undead never run away the idea for them is to survive as long as possible while you get stuff to the flank of whatever your skeletons are holding down and crush them. So obviously going with HW and shield gives them a better AS and will make them survive longer.

2. I agree with the first part, but you shouldn't ever expect the casket to work anyway. In all my games I think its gone off once, people save dice and even scrolls for it because they don't want it to work. So the idea of it (besides psychology for your opponent) is to weaken their magic and suck their dispel dice so your more important spells can work.

Hmm I mostly agree with the rest.
