Hi,

I've been thinking about this one for a while.

Using 40K miniatures as chess pieces. I haven't settled on my ideal matches yet for a Space marines set, see what you think of this for a start and please, I welcome suggestions for alternatives. The Queen is clearly a tricky piece.

King - Terminator Captain

Queen - Terminator with Lightning Claws (scratch your eyes out?)

Bishop - Chaplain

Knight - jump-pack assault marine

Rook - veteran with powerfist

Pawn - standard bolter marine

What about other 40K armies? Match-up suggestions?

That's always a fun topic to go over I can think of a couple.

Necrons
King : C'tan
Queen: Lord
Bishop: Wraith / Immortal
Knight: Necron Destroyer / Wraith
Rook: Spyder
Pawn: Necron Warrior

Tyranids
King: Hive Tyrant
Queen: Tyranid Warrior
Bishop: Zoanthrope
Knight: Ravenor
Rook: Hive Guard / Tyrant Guard
Pawn: Termagaunt / Hormagaunt

Eldar
King: Farseer
Queen: Warlock
Bishop: Banshees? (Hard to say for Eldar)
Knight: Swooping Hawk / Warp Spyder / Jetbike (Eldar have too many good options for this)
Rook: Wraithlord/ Wraithguard
Pawn: Guardian / Dire Avenger

Personally I've figured that librarians would be a decent queen for Marines, or maybe an Honor guard?. Also Terminators or Devastators for the Rook

I've got some different ideas for Tyranids, mostly because I'm going based on piece power/importance:

Tyranids:

King: Norn Qeen
Queen: HT
Bishop: Shrike
Knight: Lictor
Rook: Zoa
Pawn: Hormie.

Cool idea with the Librarian. I was pondering a Terminator with an assault cannon for the rook - kind of like an homage to space hulk.

Chaos!!!

King= Chaos Lord
Queen= Sorcerer
Bishop= Berzerker (thought of this one because the word bearers used to be obsessed with the Imperial Cult)
Knight= Raptors
Rook= Possessed
Pawn= Chaos Marine

I think librarium is definately a good idea for queen, I would have said a chapter master for king and then terminator for rook.

I would have thought the closest things space marines have to pawns is some allied guard =)

Roughrider?

Surely the Grey Knight should be the knight :p

...and the rook should be a... err... xeno hunter? To represent the three Ordos...

Necrons

King - Deciver
Queen - Nightbringer
Rook - Spyder
Bishop - Wraith
Knight - Destroyer lord w. Warschyte
Pawn - Warrior

We'll just have to make the spaces a bit larger to fit the big pieces ^^

Make the space marine queen a dreadnought. After all she is the mightiest on the table...

I've thought of crafting my own chess set and using 40k models as the pieces, but you really need to use the right pieces for the job. For one, nothing that doesn't fit on a standard base (unless you plan to play on a REALLY big board) The best matchup, I think, would be SM vs. CSM, as you can justify the equal model count and size of models.

SM / CSM Respectively, with consideration to their movement and role, moreso than their chess names.
Captain / Lord (King)
Librarian / Sorceror (Queen)
Assault Marines / Raptors (Bishop)
Sternguard / Champions (Knight)
Devastators / Havocs (Rook)
Tactical Squad / Chaos Marine Squad (Pawn)

I envision building a wooden carry case that folds and latches, with themed Imperial vs Chaos scenery painted in place of white squares (black squares covering the scenery in your standard checker pattern). The board slides out of the case when opened to reveal the models resting in their battle foam.

The models could be themed by classic rivalries, such as Space Wolves versus Thousand Sons.

Hmmm... I don't know about all these infantry models. I'm feeling a mechanized IG version.

King: Manticore
Queen: Demolisher
Knight: Battle Tank
Bishop: Basilisk
Rook: Chimera
Pawn: Sentinels

EDIT: Granted, this would require a significantly larger chess board, but hey what's wrong with that?

I disagree with alot of these. Mostly because knights in chess are supposed to be the warriors. Hence why they're knights. So I'd put the common trooper here and put the expendable units as pawns. Like this.

Space Marines:
King: Chapter Master in Terminator Armour
Queen: Librarian
Bishop: Chaplain
Knight: Marines with Bolters
Rook: TechMarine or Dreadnought
Pawn: Scouts or Servitors

Tau:
King: Ethereal
Queen: Crisis Suit
Bishop: Stealth Suits
Knight: Fire Warriors
Rook:Broadside
Pawns: Drones

Orks:
King: Warboss
Queen: Big Mek
Bishop: Wierd Boyz
Knight: Ork Shoota
Rook: Meganobz
Pawns: Grots

Imperial Guard:
King: Company Commander
Queen: Lord Comissar
Bishop: Ministorum Priest
Knight: Storm Trooper
Rook: Ogryns
Pawns: Guardsmen

Necron:
King: C'tan
Queen:Necron Lord
Bishop:Immortals
Knight: Warriors
Rook: Tomb Spyder
Pawn: Scarab

Eldar:
King: Autarch
Queen: The Avatar
Bishop: Farseers
Knight: Dire Avengers
Rook: Wraith Lord
Pawns: Hard because the Eldar don't really HAVE expendable forces. So I'd say Guardians. Since there are alot of them.

Tyranids:
King: The Hive Queen
Queen: Hive Tyrant
Bishop: Genestealers
Knights: Warriors
Rooks: Tyrant Guard
Pawns: Hormogaunts/ Termagaunts
