Hey all,

First I'd like to say this place is great - really amazing for the learning curve I've been going through the last month or so!

Anyway, finally decided on Tyranids (don't own anything yet) and was thinking of building a 500pt Tyranid Army to begin playing with a friend (who has SMs and CSMs).

I finally came up with the following ideas and was looking for criticism and/or votes on the best one.

LIST 1
HQ:
[95] Tyranid Prime - Deathspitter, Pair of Boneswords

ELITES:
[60] Zoanthrope Brood (1)

TROOPS:
[80] Termagant Brood (16)
[112] Genestealer Brood (8)
[150] Warrior Brood (4) - Deathspitters, Venom Cannon

TOTAL: 497

LIST 2
HQ:
[95] Tyranid Prime - Deathspitter, Pair of Boneswords

ELITES:
[100] Hive Guard Brood (2)

TROOPS:
[160] Hormogaunt Brood (20) - Toxin Sacs
[145] Warrior Brood (4) - Deathspitters, Barbed Strangler

TOTAL: 500

LIST 3
HQ:
[95] Tyranid Prime - Deathspitter, Pair of Boneswords

ELITES:
[120] Zoanthrope Brood (2)

TROOPS:
[176] Hormogaunt Brood (22) - Toxin Sacs
[110] Warrior Brood (3) - Deathspitters, Barbed Strangler

TOTAL: 501

Thanks for reading and any help and criticism is greatly appreciated! A quick question though: You can't have a warrior brood with only one of them carrying a lashwhip and bonesword, right?

I like none of them. To my mind at 500pts your HQ choice should be a tervigon. It spawn ability plus catalyst make it a steal at 175 pts. And despite what others say its h2h ability against the right opponent is decent also (unless your foe has a hidden fist it can beat almost anything if it gets the charge). 2 of these, plus 2 hiveguard and 10 gaunts is very effective.

I've just started too ^^ and I took two Tervigons and a large unit of Termagants [18]. The Tervigon beat Necrons to a pulp in assault, losing only one wound in the process. Though I lost against Space Wolves, because of a lack of close combat specialists, I'm not sure if my kind of list would work against Space Marines or Chaos. But that being said, I do agree with Mr Slayer that you should take a Tervigon. They are awesomeness. :)

Cheers guys for the tips. Yeah, I've been thinking of the Tervigon. Will bear that in mind for a new setup!

Tervigon OR Prime. Both tend to be highly debated over in 500pt games. I suggest you play with both and see what best suits your style, for me they are about even. But if I were to pick a list out of those three would be list 2, as it is nearly identical to my list. :p

LOL. Cheers thanks for that. Seems List 2 is most popular out of those three. I would be interested in trying the Tervigon out at some stage, but right now, don't really have the time to convert, etc. So I'll start with list 2 and try out the tervigon in future I think.

I too like list 2, very similar to what I'm planning on running.

A quick question though: You can't have a warrior brood with only one of them carrying a lashwhip and bonesword, right?
That's correct and leads me to something you could try out. I think it might be worth while swapping the Prime's dual boneswords with a bonesword/lashwhip combo. If you plan on running the prime with the warriors, this will allow for a similar effect.

Out of the 3? run list two, very nice indeed.
Depending on who your playing, your prime can either sit back as an assault deterrent/wound soaker for your hive gaurd, or he can sit with your warrioars to up their BS so they hit more reliably.
And of course, 20 hormagaunts with toxin sacs is one of my favorite units, go ahead you will love them :)
All in all, nice and solid, after this I would reccomend perhpas adding a group of gergoyles, then perhaps a tervigon or trygon. then a couple of zoanthroped, adding to your troops all the while :)
