I have only very recently got into Warhammer and play a few games at the local Gamesworkshop with other beginners. Soon there is a trip the Warhammer World, which includes entry to 650 points per person doubles tourney. I'm not an over-competative player, but I do want my army to be able to put up a decent fight. Having no experience of competative play and playlists, I need help selecting what to take.

So suggestions please for a 650points doubles army.

Something easy?
Exalted Hero, shield, Flail, Mark of Tzeentch, Collar of Khorne=154
Chaos Warriorsx10, MoN, shields, musician&standard bearer=208
Marauder Horsemenx5, flails, MoS=85
+5 chaos knights for a special choice
Comes out to 3 points under 650.
Your exalted heros' statline is... A 2+armor save or 4+ armor save and str. 7 on the first round of combat. And a 5+ wardsave. The unit has defence against shooting with MoN and magic with mr 2 from the hero. Run them together, if the enemy has a huge cavalry unit of doom, use the horsemen to lure them away and hit em with the knights and nurgle unit.

I guess the main question would be do you know who your partner will be ahead of time? Is it a friend, or will they pair you up with someone there?

In the case of a friend it would be good to get a feel for what his list is too, that way we can get an idea of what kind of synergistic elements you can provide with his force.

If its a complete stranger I might lean towards throwing a sorcerer into the mix just so that you don't get shafted for magic defense. WoC have some of the most resilient sorcerers, have a statline not unlike a warrior.

Alvarelbandito list certainly looks like a good starter army. Should be reasonably easy to make use of, and provide a good showing.

Chaos knights for me would be a must i don't think many armies would be able to deal with them quickly at 650 but it depends how you kit them out- standard is probably a must for the +1 combat res , but don't spend too many points on them otherwise you will find it hard to block out your army with anything else than marauders.
If you want some magic in there a level 2 sorcerer with a power familiar is pretty decent- with a mark or one of the lores.. overall you'd be getting 5 power dice all that can be used on that 1 sorcerer if he is your only magic user.

with the warriors i'd run the them in ranks of 6 x 2-3 -that way you are making the most of those 2 attacks each.

If he has no magic in his list you may want to bring a dispel scroll

Ive heard lizardmen magic is good, you guys could bring a magic heavy list, even without an exalted character you will be on par combat wise with other armies. many armies will lack magic defense.
