So, I thought it was about time to dust off some unit boxes and dig up the bits bin and begin to actually paint some of these impressive GW grey and Green Stuff ... well ... green.

....anyways I figure the best way to get me motivated to put some paint on these models would be to post it in a thread so that my progress can be mocked or praised by those within the hobby who may find themselves in the same situation that I am in. A full time job, two young children, and a beautiful wife (whom does not game in any form :/ .... does create some discussions).

First up then will be my Bretonnians since I figure the many different colours of their heraldry will get the juices flowing so that I can then challenge myself to finishing my Space Marines, Dwarves, and then my beloved WoC. I have set myself up for roughly a 2000 point list (will post the list later for criticism... I mean praise?), which has bee put together more out of fluff than competiveness, although I do not think that I have too much more to add to reach that level. And I have 6 months to complete, I will give myself bonus marks if I finish before Christmas in four short months.

So here is the list before me;

Month One - 3 Pegasus Knights, and 2 units of 10 bowmen

Month Two - Damsel (Mounted), 5 Knights of the Realm (Musician)

Month Three - 9 Knights of the Realm (with FC)

Month Four - Bretonnian Lord, 8 Knights of the Realm (with FC)

Month Five - Paladin (mounted BSB), 4 Grail Knights (Converted)

Month Six - Trebuchet, and Damsel (on foot just for fun)

I will begin posting pictures shortly of some of the WIP that I have begun putting together and customizing and then once I get going along with a little fluff, and then when the models are completed more pics will follow. I look forward to any suggestions, technniques and anything that I can improve upon since this will be the first full army which I will have complete rather than several partials.

Also I was looking to make the knight bases look like they have been recently trampled and was wondering if anyone had any experience on making hoof prints in GS. I was thinking of cutting off a leg from a spare horse and grinding it out a little to give it the 'shoed' appearance. Let me know what you think.

Regards,

Here are a few shots (Albeit poor photos, but it is the only camera that I own) of my very WIP Paladin/Lord character. This was my first attempt at a model with free hand, I hope that the photos are clear enough that the detail can be seen. From here I need to put some more attention into highlithing and the shield. The story behind him will follow shortly.

Enjoy the photos, and thanks for looking.

That's looking great! Can't wait to see more. I'm in a similar position (2 kids, non-gamer wife, moving towns for a new job) and found boxes and boxes of my old minis the other day. Keep up the good work

Thanks Exarch, I was doing some more digging last night and found this guy.

For those who may not recognize this guy, it is the old King of the Bretons, unfortunately I could not find his mount so I plan on bulking him up a little in order for him to ride on the newer horses. Should be a fairly simple conversion, will post more as they come off the assembly line.

Yay.. Knights for the knight god.... Will be hanging about here for sure.. My brets are languishing in the. "not a priority", pile =(, the only thing I can say for the moment on the Lord is about the converted arm.. I like the weapon option. Knights with Maces are more accurate than people realise, and but if you think about the placement of the arm, and how strong do you think that guy would need to be to hold the weight of the Mace at that angle? I would have said angle the wrist to let the head of the Mace drop a little... But that's a fairly minor point tbh good luck man, and and remember the moment re knights you give the to knight god the more powerful he will make you!

Nice one, Father-Chaos!
I think there are a lot of people who have a Bretonnian army waiting for some love…including myself.
Curious to see further developments…

So month 1 is in motion now and I have made some pretty good progress. the only thing that I have changed is that I dropped the Knights Errant from month 1 and brought up the three Pegasus knights. I may by changing the Errant knights into KotRealm when I put together my army list.... but that is a WIP all on its own.

Here are a couple of pictures to show what sort of progress I have been making on this months challenge, first up is a group shot (apologies on the picture qualities, I hope they are clear enough for everyone). The next are some separate shots showing where I am currently. The blue and white heraldry on the peasants will be from my lord character whom I will be making the father of the hero already shown above when I get around to writing up some back stories to my characters.

As always thanks for taking the time to look at what I have done and I hope you enjoy.

Hooray for the Brets!!! Rep for you! I really like the two-tone tunics on your bowmen and wish I would have thought of that on my fellows. Get some wash and highlights on them and they will be epic and awesome.

Thanks guys, the long weekend was good to me. I had a lot of time at night to get a great headstart to my quest for a completed army. I also have a lord conversion in the making which I will post pics of shortly when I get closer to finishing him.

I was thinking of replacing the 5 Knights Errant with Grail Knights instead, possibly using the Empire Knightly Order box to customize them. Has anyone had any experience with converting Grail Knights through kitbashing and GS work? I am using the knights from the movie Excalibur (1981) with Nigel Terry as my inspiration, hopefully having each knight unique to itself..... but first I must paint.

I made the balance of my Grail Knight unit of 9 from KoR models. I got the 5 metal GKs, but obviuosly did not want to spend the $$ for the others needed to bulk up the unit. The decals in the GK box had plenty of leftovers, so you can get the nice, shiny gold and silver. I just sculpted capes on them with the shape of the grail just like the metal versions, so you can hardly tell they are not original GKs unless you pick one up and really look close - also, not being metal, they are much lighter!

Yeah, it is mostly the cost of the metals which has kept me from purchasing them at this point. I can get a box and a half of the regular plastic knights for the same price. I have a vision of heavily armoured knihgts when I think of the Grail Knights and very ornate to the point where each knight looks entirely different from the others. There will be a lot of GS work and varied colour schemes for the knights to maybe help set them apart from all of the other knights in my army.

In regards to the cloaks, is there a tutorial on how to sculpt these on LO? It is the one thing I have yet to attempt and would like to see how to get started with it.

I just took some putty, pinched it flat and made the outline of the grail cup, then put some folds on it and molded it to his shoulders. I also made some capes for my Crusader Knights using folded paper and glue with a printed design - extra easy and they look really cool... I will snap some pics of each type and try to post later on.

I've never used paper for anything as permanent as a cape - only as temporary banners. One thing that does work well though is aluminum/tin foil. The trick that I've learned is to fold it in half and leave a little tab along the seam. Sculpt it however you want, and then cut it away from the tab so you have 2 identical layers. Sandwich some glue between them and then spray them with basecoat and paint them up. Then put a few layers of dull-coat on them to stiffen them up even more and you're done. It works well, and it holds up better than paper (doesn't yellow or curl) and it is more workable when trying to get folds etc.
I put foil tabbards on a whole army of Space Marines ages ago, they look awful but that was more user-error than the fault of the method. I skinned an entire P38 model airplane in foil as well, but that's an entirely different technique.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I would never have thought of tin foil, I would think that it is hard to work with keeping it so smooth .... but I think I will give each a try and see what comes out best for me.

Made some real good progress this week, the archers are nearing completion and then I will put the finishing touches to the Pegasus Knights hopefully by the end of the weekend. In the meantime here is a very prelim WIP of my Bretonnian Lord. I am still debating what to do for a head but I think I may alter the horse/crown head that comes with the Pegasus Knights simply by removing the horse and then hollowing out the crown portion. The ideas for the base are also up for debate right now...

Will post a completed pic when I get to thast stage.

Exactly where I took the idea from Commisarlestat, dug up a few of the old models last week .... man those horses are tiny beside the new ones. I even shaved off the sword hilt from the scabbard hanging at his hip. It made sense to remove it since he is carrying it in his hand. The next hero I do will be the old King Louen metal (just have to bulk him up a bit first though).

General question to those whom have experience in this: How does the Texture Paint line from GW stand up to adding to bases, I am thinking a little snow theme for my bases with lots of mud under the horses and thought I might use the Texture Paint (Brown coloured one) as my base.

Hoping to have some completed pics for you guys to look at by the end of the weekend.

I really like the start on the Lord. And, it appears your greenstuff skills are excellent, so you will not have a problem with anything you wish to add - even the capes/cloaks.

Here are some snaps of the grail capes. The middle and one on the right have a sculpted cape and the one on the left is an original GK:
Capes (2).jpg Capes (1).jpg

Just for reference. the one in the middle is a converted KoR and the one on the left is one of the old model GKs - I really like him. The guy on the right is one of the current GKs:
Capes (5).jpg Capes (4).jpg

Below is one of the paper capes. This paper I printed the design on then folded in half to cut. I slightly moistened one half and used white glue on the other, pressed together and formed to shape. When dry it is very stiff and durable and I glued it on with a little thick CA. But, I think I will try the foil method the next time - that sounds excellent!

I still need to go around the edge of the cape with some black - just have not gotten around to that, yet...

Thanks for the visuals MDSW, the cloaks look great and so do the models. Once I get a really good start into my KotR blocks I will begin working on my GK's. I have a pretty good concept in mind that I am working with right now so I am trying to keep it put off for the time being so that I do not get sidetracked.
