OK, starting Empire here. Just ordered my first models and they're on their way. It'll be my first 'real' army with actual models. I want it to be versatile (hence coloured) with lots of different units and the ability to work in each phase. Here you'll see what I've come up with:

Captain
-Full plate armor, Shield, Sword of Might, Van Horstman's Speculum

Wizard
-Lvl. 2, Wizard's Staff

19 Swordsmen
-Full command
-9 Free Company
-5 Crossbowmen

10 Handgunners
-5 Crossbowmen

5 Inner Circle Knights
-Full command

5 Pistoliers

Great Cannon

Mortar

It's about 1000 points, a little under if I recall correctly. I think it has a lot of variety in it, and I'm sure I'll have many great battles to come. Also, different units offer different conversion and painting possibilities and many tactical dimensions.

There's a solid block of troops, hard-hitting knights, good amount of shooting and a fast unit to harass the enemy with. Don't know how I'll manage against that one bloke and his dwarves, but I'll figure out. There's a lot of people in our local gaming group so I have to think of other armies, too.

So, am I missing something or otherwise shooting myself in the leg? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! ;)

Solid list. I'd probably move the Crossbowmen from the Swordsmen to the Handgunners as they can't move-and-fire. I'd normally give the Van Horstman's Speculum to a L1 Wizard as it'll be more effective than giving it to a Captain (the lower the WS, S and A the better). How about putting your Captain on a Barded Warhorse and leading the Knights for a little bit more counter-attack punch?

Wot? Coloured State Troops?!? I hope the officers, at least, are white!

Sorry, couldn't resist poking a little fun at your use of the wrong adjective...the list looks great. I agree about moving the crossbowmen off of the swordsmen. That's really the only needed change. You could actually dump the speculum. You're not likely to need it at 1000 points. Between the captain, the inner circle kaniggits, the pistoliers, and the cannon, you'll be fine against enemy characters.
