Is the anvil worth its weight in gold? Well considering were talking about dwarfs it would be hell no. But in gaming terms is the anvil really worth the points spent on it? Replies please.

The anvil is one of these things you either love or hate.

i personally love it for its new found skills and terror factor (not against units but against players) with alot of people moaning about "CHEESE!" they tend to do all the can to destroy it or avoid it entirely.

i tend to only use the ancient powers because i enjoy the risk and gamble of it.

the best way to see how you like it is to have a go with it (proxy it a game for example if your foe will let you) there is really no way i can truly tell you if it would work for you or not.
Thanks for the reply. It has some really nice moves like stoping those damn flyers form getting at our war machines and occasionally allowing those short legs to charge. I was a reading ssome thing in white dwarf recently about charging an enemy unit with a gyrocopter and the ncharging a squad of dwarfs with the anvil. You maouver fo r a flank charge in th movement phase and then when oyu charge in the shooting phase youll hopfully be able to break them and they gyrocopter means you persue 3d6 . Very nasty!
well IMO when you want to have an anvil in your army, you need to build your army around that. Its because it costs a lot and you need something defend it and something to counter. So when bringing an anvil make sure your army also fits the artifact.
Thanks for the reply. What would you reccomend t ocompliment it>?
The old Anvil was pretty useless. I had over 5k points of Dwarves at one time and I would never use the damn thing even though I owned.

NOW, it has less spells, but they are twice as good. I would take an Anvil now in a heartbeat, but you definitely have to build your army around using it. What units to take? Well, I would suggest taking a good mix of Shooting (Thunderers, Bolt Throwers with Engineers) and some rock hard troops such as Longbeards.
Thanks for the reply. So you should get shooty units then some assault to defend it. But how about hindig it behind cover, would that work just as well?
Depending on how big the army is going to be you should consider different oppertunities. I've just played a 2k army with the anvil with me and I had a good strong unit of IBs on the left and a warroir unit on the right. Supported with a few firering squads and some more CC units. It worked quite well. Just be carefull were you deploy the anvil.
Im not sure about the new rules, but if it is the old rules then its not good to deploy it behind some cover, as some of the spells require LoS.
might want a master engineer to entrench it, REALLY boosts its survivability
I've used the new anvil and it truly goes off, I have had it cause 3 charges on flanks and rear in 1 game and it caused a massacre result as these charges were just because of the extra manuevrability by the spell.

The chaos lord on dragon was P#ssed off about not being able to fly also...
lol. It is funny to see a dwarf regiment charge :D The fact that it isnt a spell but a 'shooting' attack is quality. If ur using the 2+ one it will work 5/6 times.
Its just great, nothing better than hearing your opponent grumbling about it, sounds a lot like more dwarves to me!!!
Is the anvil worth it or not?

It all depends on your other army. I've seen a game once in which the dwarfs would have lost significantly. But the anvil gave the extra move and allowed Thorgrim Grudgebearer to slice an ogre unit that would otherwise be out of range.

It can work extremely well, and is very reliable. BUT DO NOT USE IT IN SMALL GAMES
Was that game in the WD which came out with the relase of dwarves? Thorgrim versus Greaseus.
The only way I would take it is with thorek ironbrow. he enhances it to be awesome, with ancient power on a 3+ and rerolls. definently sweet.

Yes it was, Ogres got chopped. The thrones painstakingly low move really needs something like the anvil to back it up!
The report was funny because from the off it was obvious dwarves would win. The anvil really showed its worth tho and can allow some great charge manouvers.

Yeah, it did look like the Dwarves would win, but it said on the test match that it was solid victory to the ogres...?
