A few days ago i was leafing through a friends chaos army book and he wouldnt shut up about archaon. Ive seen his stat line and magic itmes, but if i remember correctly he costs nigh on 900pts. So is he really worth his weight in gold?

No.

Crom makes a far better Lord choice, with is 230 pts, not only can he take on any opponent, but he also makes your marauders much more reliable units for free to boot.
forgot about crom. Thanks for reply. That funny weapon figthing style is cool, shiled and axe or aword and shiled you decide!
You're gonna get mixed answers on this, Archaon costs 855pts and yes there are cheaper Lord choices...what it comes down to I think is the player's personal preference, I mean for smaller armys Crom is probably the best choice, if you're playing a bigger army Archaon might be a good choice. My preference, I use Archaon, in the hands of a good general he can be devastating (not saying I'm good lol) i.e. I've taken down regiments of 16 with just him alone. *shrug*
Of course you did, but was that regiment worth near 400 pts ? probably not, and even if it did he wouldn't even be at a 50 % effectivity. That's what caracters should be able to grab in games from 50-70% of their point cost back.

The regiment was 16 Chaos Warriors weighing in at 288pts. Was it the best way to use Archaon, no, but who cares. You make a good point though.
The general Idea is that anything worth more than 500 points has one of two things coming:
1) He picks off weak lings and doesn't have the time to buy himself back.
2) He jumps into your opponent's best guys and gets himself killed, buying back nothing
The only hyper-expensive thing that lasts the whole game is a Greater Daemon of Nurgle.
And that's if he doesn't suffer instability.
