I was thinking about the price for a standard death company without jet packs compared to that of the dreaded plague marines and they seem a good deal. you can get a 30 man squad for 600 points at 20 points per model while plague marines are 23 points and offer few advantages for these extra points. Could having overly big death companies with standard weapons be the new plague marines? thoughts?

I do not think that death company are at all in line to replace plague marines. Aside from being in entirely different codices their roles are just too different.

Plague marines are objective sitters, meant to start or move onto an objective in cover some where earlyin the game and sit there soaking up firepower until the end of the game, pumping out a few plasma shots here and there. Now let's examine why death company can't fill that role.

-First off is the fact that death company are not able to control objectives, and at best would be preventing your opponent from getting it himself.
-Secondly you would have to contend with the rage rule, meaning the chances are EXTREMELY thin of your death company not running off as you would need two rhinos at the least from preventing you of seeing any enemy's at all.
-And finally aside from bolters death company have no real ranged weaponry. This just makes it a waste of points to be sitting them there putting out little fire power, or no fire power with their rhino screen.

In short death company may have some rules and abilities in common with plague guard but will never replace them as 1) they are in different codices and 2) their battlefeild roles are simply too different.

What about for battles without objectives? would having a frenzied death company rush their lines be better than a defensive shild of plage marines (taking into account the points cost)

I don't see the issue. Plague marines function defensively; death company function offensively. Both are pretty awesome at their jobs. Death Company are a great deal (so long as they don't take jump packs) but they also have Rage and don't score, two very big negatives.

Well that depends on a number of factors, Plague Marines are much more controlled, and can lay down fire so will do well against an offensive opponent that will come to you. Death Company, if their rhino gets destroyed will often charge forward, leaving them unsupported and easy targets.

Against a very shooty opponent the plague marines will be out shot while the DC can charge frward and shred them in combat.

So would an alternate to plague marines just be to get a shooty squad like tacticals that can sit on an objective, but give them a sanguinary priest so they feel no pain.

@Mr. Biscuits
You assume that OP likes plague marines for their resilience in a defensive situation. I believe OP only refers to the resilience of the marine with the amount of punishment they can deal as well. In that case DC and PM are fairly similar in terms of damage but fit for different roles on the board.

Defensive unit that may be better:
Sniper scouts with cloaks and a priest.
2+ cover with FNP, you forgo shooting in this case but it fits the job you are describing.
5 man + priest = 140 points, it is a fair price for an objective holder imo.

I would, however run them in a LR or a Stormraven with a chaplain, gives them more control that they lack compared to PM.

Yeah that would be a much closer alternative. However there are still a number of differences
-Plauges get 2 special weapons, tacticals get 1 specail and 1 heavy
-Plauges have higher toughness
-Tacticals have furious charge
-Plauges have defensive grenades
-ATSKNF and Combat Tactics v. Fearless
-Plagues can all fit in a rhino, and can take upgrade weapons without having to be 10 men
