Blood Angels Vet Asslt Sqd Query

602 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  CaptShrike
Can anyone who plays BA please tell me why a player would field a Vet Asslt Sqd? They cost quite a bit more than a regular assault sqd, and have no added advantages other than making them really expensive vets. Why did GW not give them any extra weapons choices or alternative rules for the additional 6 pts.?

Don't get me wrong, I personnally love the fact that BA's Vet Sqd has jump packs, but I'm really hoping they make them a worth-while opption in the upcoming codex revision.

If anyone fields these guys in a way that is effective to a good BA stratagy, please let me know with some examples. Otherwise, just feel free to rant along with me.

Well... They can take Meltaguns and Plasmaguns, but this isn't really a reason to spend even more points for a extra point of leadership and all...

I tried them, and they just aren't worth it, even when given meltaguns.
Hopefully, they get thoroughly revised.
If not then, I say just drop them! According to the 4th ed assault squads, the points have decreased by 3pts.
If they revise the vet assault squad the same way, then they should also be decreased by the same amount.

I've used them once, and I would never use them again, they are practically the same as normal assault troops, except for the meltaguns and plasmaguns, and the +1 LS. They are also way to much points for a BA army, since we have to buy an over-expensive chaplain!

I used to use them a lot- I liked being able to give the squad 2 flamers to blast enemy units with before getting stuck in.

I don't think it's compulsory to take the chaplain...
its a great unit, better leadership, furious charge, 2x melta guns, jump packs...

use a small squad of 5 or 6 to hunt down leman russes and landraiders... all good fun!

Normal assault squads can do this Job. Vet assault squads at the moment just aren't worth the extra points. If the cost was decreased I'd be Interested as It could enable gamers to field multiple assault squads with the added bonus of being able to use FA slots for speeders and the like.
Yeah me too if they drop their pts by 3 then i'll take them...they all get furious charge anyway and that's exactly how much a normal assault marine + furious charge costs. Plus, fielding 8 jump-packed assault units (DC, honour guard, 3xVet assault, 3xnormal assault) seems very appealing to me.

Its not compulsory, but any good BA player knows its the wise thing to do.

What?? Why? I'm a good BA player and I don't consider him essential at all.
What happens to your DC then when they decide to play chase with an opponents speeder?

Ok- first off, the Death Company are not the be-all-and-end-all of winning with Blood Angels. I've won tournaments (there's a plural there) without using a chaplain and using the DC as a distraction/bullet magnet. Pop them in a rhino, trundle them to a handy point on the battle field and open the doors. BAs are still marines after all.
Secondly- By not taking the chaplain I free up a lot of points, I still get a handful of death company to use (with the free rhino) and I can now choose between Librarians (the holy terror of Hive Tyrants), Commanders or Sanguinary Priests (who I like, actually). The priest can stand in for the chaplain if you want, keeping control of the DC- that extra medic save was quite handy (note: haven't used BA under the new system, not sure what a medic does for you these days).
I should also note that I don't min/max squads, I don't take Vet serg upgrades just to get power weapons and I do use BA devastators.
If you think that you need the DC and hence a chaplain to have a dangerous army you are wrong and you should try fighting a few battles without them.

Now go and flaggelate yourself for penitence, doubter.

and....

they also have accesss to termie honours at +10 points..... but that is ass 10 points for 1 attack urgghh
