I can help on the Marines on the base bit. Buy a box of 3 marines for £6 at your local store.Model them on your base as you would like but leave couple of limbs off and stick them somewhere else on the base. to make the limbs seem mangled at the jounts attack the thing with a knife and use green stuff to create pools of blood and broken bones etc:x
.To make the marines really chewed up, straighten out a paperclip and heat the end til it glows in a gas flame. Then stab the marines in acouple of places to make them look like they have bulletholes that have penetrated the armour.the plastic oozes a little so it will look like guts coming out of the armour(use green stuff for extra gore).
The marines should be painted like the terrain on the base, i.e there should be mud all over there legs or their armour ,if on a grass terrain or something like grass. Make them look really worn out and battered in otther words. It also might be an idea to half bury the models in green stuff to make them look like theyre dead, not just sunbathing
