Battle Report fought on 9th November 2003

The battle was a 4000 point per side encounter between Tyranids and Chaos Marines on an 8 by 4 table with two 2000 point armies on each side.

The sides were roughly as follows:

Lord Machielli’s Renegade Company:

HQ

Chaos Lord, Mark of Tzeentch, Gift of Chaos, Bedlam Staff, Terminator Armour, other gifts & wargear.

Elites

9 Terminators, Marks of Slaanesh, two Blast Masters, 9 power fists.

5 Havocs with Marks of Slaanesh. 4 Missile Launchers.

5 Havocs with Marks of Slaanesh, 4 Heavy Bolters

Troops

4 squads of 5 Marines with Bolt Pistol and CCW

2 squads of Daemonettes

Heavy Support

5 Havocs with 4 lascannons

Defiler, indirect fire, twin lascanon, Havoc Launcher

Dreadnought, Plasma Canon (40), Twin Bolter,

Daemon Prince Pe’Arson’s Company

HQ

Tooled up Daemon Prince of Khorne with wings and all the trimmings.

Elite

18 (that’s eighteen!) Terminator Aspiring Champions of Khorne

Troops

10 Chaos Marines

A large squad of Khorne Berserkers (about 15-18?)

Heavy Support

Land Raider

A Detachment From Hive Fleet Owridius

HQ

Two tooled up Hive Tyrants

Elite

2 broods of 5 Warriors, no guns, equipped for assault.

Troops

3 brood of Hormagaunts with Leaping & Scything things and a Hive Node.

1 brood of genestealers

Heavy Support

Two Carnifexes with no ranged weapons but heavily equiped for assault.

A Detachment from Hive Fleet Dongreyus

HQ

A Hive Tyrant apparently. I never noticed it so can’t tell you any more.

Elite

A Lictor. I assume these things are elite, could be wrong.

Squad of 6 Warriors, 3 armed with venom cannons.

Troops

4 very large squads of Genestealers

Heavy Support

3 Zoanthropes.

The mission was a weird thing arrived at by some random generation rules we recently acquired. Each force had a random objective to achieve by or at the end of the 6 turn game. Machielli’s was to have at least 1 unit of troops left unbroken and over 50%. Pe’arson’s was to reduce all Dongreyus’ troop units to below 50%. Dongreyus’ was to reduce all Pe’arson’s Troop units to below 50%. Owridius was to wipe out Pe’arson’s HQ. Whichever side achieved the most objectives would win.

The other wierdness in the mission was initial deployment. We were at opposite long board edges and came on from that edge on your first turn. Only Troops could be used initially, all else was in reserve. Reserves appeared at one unit of your choice per turn from turn 2.

Let battle commence:

The Tyranids started. Hive Dongreyus brought on the genestealers on his right, shielded by some woods. Hive Owridius brought his troops on mostly in the centre and slightly to the left, again shielded by woods.

The Chaos army used a plan of Tzeentchian cunning, deploying into one corner on their right as far from Dongreyus’ genestealers as possible.

The Tyranids advanced steadily. Very steadily. In fact due to a comical series of rough terrain rolls by Owridius’ Genestealers (who spent almost the whole battle crossing one 9” wood), and the efforts to go around them by the rest of his army, the pace could be safely described as glacial. In the first few turns Owridius brought on both Hive Tyrants and a Carnifex, Dongreyus his warriors on his left opposite the Chaos troops, a Hive Tyrant in the centre and his Zoanthropes all on the extreme right.

This ought to have made for a veritable shooting-fest for Chaos, except that the troops were mostly equipped with bolt pistols and had therefore to wait for support. The first units brought up from reserve were a landraider (which the small unit of Pe’Arson’s troops immediately hid in) and a Defiler deploying onto a hill close to the centre of the Chaos edge. A handful of casualties were inflicted, then both units of terminators appeared one either side of the Defiler.

Owridius, who had taken casualties from the Defiler, charged it with a unit of Gaunts. They had no chance of damaging it but until they were removed it would not be shooting. Novice Hive Tyrant Dongreyus discovered that his warriors’ venom cannons could not damage a Landraider, and redirected his fire into the Chaos Marines, who were to take small but steady casualties for the rest of the game from the irritating insectoids.

Pe’Arson’s Khorne Daemon Prince now arrived and charged into a damaged unit of Gaunts, wiping them out and sweeping into a further unit. Machielli’s Dreadnought then arrived, only to be charged by the lurking Lictor, who was promptly despatched by the ancient machine. Machielli’s Terminators cleared out the Nids from the Defiler while Pe’Arsons Champion Terminators (18, yes 18!) advanced into the centre of the table.

The Tyranids last go arrived. Everything that could shoot at the Daemon Prince did, but not a scratch was inflicted! At this point the Nids acknowledged defeat – they had reduced no troops units to 50% and because the Prince was now in assault with a large mob of Gaunts there was no realistic chance he would be killed in the remaining two rounds of assault.

Chaos won due to a combination of the wily Tzeentchian Machielli being the only commander to achieve his objective, and his foresight in bribing a unit of Genestealers to slow down the rest of the Nid Army!
