Command Platoon

Just to check..

Is a command platoon compulsory in a guard army, or is it merely assumed you'll take one because it's the only non-advisor HQ choice?

If, for example, I wanted to use a Deathwatch Kill Team from chapter approved, or a special character, would I still have to include a command platoon?

Thanks for your help, all.

Yes it's compulsary.

The only exception is for an all Last Chancers army I believe.

a deathwatch kill team is allies, so even if the guard didn't need a command platoon, the kill team still couldn't be their hq

Note that the Command Platoon is a '1' choice, not '0-1'. Thus it's compulsory.

The only exceptions to these rules are the Last Chancers, and Elysian Drop Troops, AFAIK.

where dose it say this, as far as i can tell, u always have to have a Command platoon
It says it on the title for the unit entry, Kato.

"1 Command Platoon" as opposed to "0-1 Hardened Veteran Squad" for example. The difference being that the veterans are optional, you can take 0 if you like, however the command platoon is mandatory, you must take one and only one.
It's not optional, but honestly, why would anyone ever want to go to battle without a Command Squad? They are the backbone of Leadership and troop stability in a good IG army. I keep my most important squads within 12" of the HQ and I give them a Standard so that they can reroll failed tests and to top if off I give them Iron Discipline so that even under strength squads have a chance of staying in the fight.

That being said, there are times when I wish that there was a simpler HQ option for IG, because building a new command squad for each different army list that I dream up is really a pain in the rear sometimes.
I agree, the command squad is one of the best units we can field tacticaly. However - in some fluff based armies it would have been nice to have an independant character as a leader.
Xethemez, he was asking about where it says Last Chancer armies don't need a command Platoon. Frankly, I don't have a clue but it was floating around the back of my head.

It's written as part of their rules, words to the effect of 'If you take Schaeffer, you do not have to take a normal IG Command Platooon'.

Then you have the Elysian Drop Troops list, where command platoons are '0-1' rather than '1', due to the way they operate the commanding officer will not always be deployed in the same sector as his forces.
how is it hard to come up with new comand squads for diffrent armies? cant you just repaint and use the same modles? i mean from most of the lists i have seen on the boards everyone seems to use the ones out of the box.
page, paragraph and line

tell me were is says "if you take Schaeffer, you do not have to take a normal IG Command Platooon"

all i found is that he counts as a hq + one or two troop choices depending on numbers
