Wondering if the special char. Commander O'Shavah, is worth it in terms of his abilities. - ie. is he worth his weight in points?

Is the restriction he applies (0-1 of stealsuits etc.etc) a HUGE tactical disadvantage to tau?

Or is he just some fluffy special character that looks cool but pointless gamewise

he is basically fluffy, you can get around with the restrictions if you play static tau but if you play mech tau like me no way he is worth it

Even without the force org restrictions Farsight isn't worth a hill of beans. He's a CC Tau, thats all that needs to be said. Whats more is that he counts as a monsterous creature so he can't benefit from his IC status and hiding behind units. He was just a Games Workshop pipedream so that people who like "different" armies can make one with farsight in it.

O'Shavah is a cc unit (as bonzi stated).
CC and Tau don't even belong in the same sentence, unless the sentence goes something like:
"The charging black templars swept through the first Tau unit, charging into another."

I was planning to take a army around him, I thought it would be a good army. You could just take tons of fire warriors a ton of battlesuits, it doesn't matter if you have a 0-1 rescriction on stealthsuits and some other things.

But its not just stealths, its 0-1 Hammerheads AND Broadsides. With Farsight you effectively cripple one of the Tau's greatest asset for a masive point sink that can't even do its job that well. Consider this, in the Daemon Hunter army, A Grey Knight Grandmaster which is also CC oriented for those of you not familiar with GK's, costs 25 points less, puts no restrictions on his army, and could whup the everloving crap outa farsight singlehandedly. Farsight isn't just bad cause he's CC Tau or that he reduces your options severly, he's bad cuz he costs way to much for what he can do (and that ain't much by the way)

I don't think O'Shovah's org chart restrictions are that bad at 1500 points. Sure, you have to take it into account but you're restructuring your list already to focus on O'Shovah. He isn't meant to be a one-Tau meat grinder; try using him to countercharge when the enemy inevitably get in your lines. While even the Farsight-upgraded Firewarriors aren't that good, the simple fact of Tau hitting back even half-decently can wreck a plan.

Most squads will be severely understrength after advancing through a hail of pulse weaponry and that's when Farsight becomes useful.

yes sure but the thing is,is a pretty good CC dude that gets owned by 100 point chaplain and things like that and gives you restrictions on your best units worth 170 points...aun'shi is actually a good enough character for his cheap price but oshova sux

Actually your wrong, Farsight is an independent character, he only counts as a Monstrous creature in CC, ignoring armour saves and rolls 2D6+5 for penetration. Against shooting etc he counts as a normal IC.
If your inclined to take a small 1000pt list he is actually very tasty against armour and special characters, with his 3+ and 4+inv in the lower point games where the force restrictions are not so crippling.
